#AnandBhate born 1971 is an Indian classical vocalist from the #Kiranagharana. He is popular for his classical singing of songs from the Marathi film Balgandharva Anand was born in Pune, India in a family active in classical music. He inherited the singing tradition from his great grandfather Bhate Buva, who was a well known vocalist for #Thumri and #NatyaSangeet in the 19th century. By the age of 10, he had started systematic training in classical singing from #ChandrashekharDeshpande, after which he trained under Yashwantbua Marathe and with #BhimsenJoshi, with whom he trained for 15 years. His first public appearance was as a child in 1981, when he performed #Balgandharva'sgayaki on All India Radio, Doordarshan and had a tour in the USA. Over the years, he has performed all over India and abroad in many prestigious music festivals such as the Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav, Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki Sangeet Samaroha, Chaturang Pratishthan Rangsammelan and Learn quest Music Conference.
Bhate won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the 2011 Marathi movie on the life of the Marathi stage actor/singer #Balgandharva.

जोहार म्हणजे काय कोणी सांगेल का
Mujara karane, namaskar karane
Johar means salutation...maybaap means motherand father both....which implies loving like a mother and protective like a father at the same time. When u adress a person as mai baap, you imply that I totally surrender to you with utmost love nd respect.
It is an expression used by people from the so-called backward caste to address people from the so-called upper castes. The Molesworth dictionary gives this meaning. The word जोहार, as per the dictionary, means warrior, and apparently a Marathi rendering of the plural of the Sanskrit word योद्धृ i.e. योद्धार:.
(Note that the word जोहार in Hindi means self-immolation, especially by royal women during the Islamic invasions of Rajput kingdoms. The Marathi meaning is completely different from this.)

There is an old Abhanga by Sant Chokhamela which has the following lines.
‘जोहार मायबाप जोहार। तुमच्या महाराचा मी महार।
बहु भुकेला जाहलो। तुमच्या उष्ट्यासाठी आलो।।’
Meaning: Salute, o warrior, who is like my father & mother! I am the Mahar of your Mahar. I am so hungry to have your leftovers.
Now, Mahar is the name of a Dalit caste. In olden times, the caste system discriminated against them in many ways. Mahars used to work as unpaid labour many times earlier. So the saint is saying that he is so lowly, i.e. a Mahar to your Mahar.
While the above lines are intended to be a token of ultimate submission to God, the metaphors used are indicative of the social norms current at that time. Due to his caste, he was not allowed to enter the temple of the same God Vitthala, whom he so earnestly worshipped.
The story of how the saint died is also noteworthy in this regard. He was from the town of Mangalwedha (in Solapur district of Maharashtra), and was working as a mason in the construction of the city wall.
In an unfortunate accident, a section of the wall collapsed on him, thus killing him instantly.
“Johaar” is a salutation widely used in Orissa. Research is needed to find how and why only Mahars in Maharashtra use the same. Mahars had a peripheral place in the general scheme of a village. They couldn’t own land, had responsibility to provide security to the village, to act as runners in order to deliver messages to nearby villages etc. It might be the result of a migration to Maharashtra - much later, after the land was owned and the powers-that-be already established in villages. There used to be a particular custom in a traditional village - Mahars had to go to the house of the chief of the village in the morning, bow to him saying “johaar” and get leftover food from him. This looks like a typical condition that a chieftain would impose while agreeing to let the needy migrants stay; making sure that the future generations know who is the boss.
