It's been a little over a year since Nikon officially released the Z System with the Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7. This video is my REVIEW a year later. I've used both cameras extensively in many different situations from indoors to outdoors to low light and great light.
I still stand behind my review's of both cameras but a year later there's a lot to discuss. There's more competition in the way of the Canon EOS R, Sony a7R IV, Sony a7R III and even the older a7 III.
This is my OFFICIAL Review one year later of the Nikon Z System.
This video was filmed with the Nikon Z6 of which we own 5 of and use as our main video cameras for the majority of our videos.

I honestly don't know how you could've painted a better picture for the viewers. You clearly were making a conscious effort to be fair to the camera makers, your audience, pro photographers, amateur photographers, and fanboys. This is not easy to do, but I feel like you nailed it. I think the relaxed and calm presentation of the information really helped. Maybe it's not as fun and exciting as teasing the fanboys of Camera Brand X, Y, or Z, but you really got all your points across in a way where there really should be no hurt feelings. Really appreciate the video. I could imagine this one was quite a challenge to try and get right.

The comparison wasn’t really superfair. A great deal of it was spent on af performance, which was improved in the last two months with the new two firmware updates. Maybe not Sony-like still, but a great deal better. Wish he would have tried that on the field.

I just hope Nikon is listening to what its most loyal critics are nearly ALL saying about the Z system. I'm actually glad I'm not at a point at the moment where I can spend on a new system - my D750 is fine for now - because it'd be an agonizing choice. Hopefully in the next year to eighteen months, Nikon can make some big strides to address the issues raised here and I can be content in choosing from whatever their next release of full-frame mirrorless is.

    • @ThomasHaynes
      @ThomasHaynes Před 4 lety

@@GuNNeR85 Or maybe he's just not as impressed with the latest Nikon Z firmware updates as you are. Do you know for sure that he didn't try the new firmware? Either way it's just all of us having opinions, and it seems maybe you like the state of the Nikon Z system more than he does. Nothing wrong with that. I'm excited about the year to come, and see what happens when the Canon and Nikon systems mature more. I'd like to move into the full frame arena sometime in the next year, and I have no full frame glass to push me to a particular system. I'm currently leaning towards Sony for the video auto-focus performance, but it'll be interesting to see how much Canon and Nikon can play catch up over the next year. Should be a fun year.

Thanks for this great video. Me, as an amateur and I choose the Z6 instead of the A7III few weeks a go, just because I had this feeling with it in my hands that I didn't had with the Sony...It' difficult to explain but I've tried them all in a shop. I took my time. Actually, I was not looking for technical perfection and for super specs, I just wanted a camera that would make me want to shoot. It's as simple as that! The Z6 fits perfectly in my hands. It makes me want to grab my camera, go out and take pictures! That's the most important thing to me

The Z-6's ergonomics, button placement, super-clear super-readable viewfinder, natural feeling handling, and for 99.9% of users, an autofocus that is as good as the Sony's, make the Nikon a better camera than the Sony A-7III, I feel.

On top of this by the next generation im sure they will have ironed out, there will be a second slot and id say they will be on par with Canon and very very close to Sony. Z6 shooter here. I agree with most of your observations about autofocus and the like, but I'm counting on these things improving within the next few years. Even with the shortcomings of the Z system, I find I very rarely miss a shot that I want to get when shooting events and candid portraits. Obviously, lens selection will improve with a bit of time, and in the meantime, I am enjoying the 50mm 1.8s and the 24-70 2.8s--both incredible lenses.
I'm not afraid to admit that my Nikon nostalgia makes me shun the "better" Sony system. I'm sorry, but I just like Nikon more!

  • @GenCodeFPV
    @GenCodeFPV Před 4 lety +57

I am a Z6 owner, very happy one: AF is an AI function and as long as the processor is fast enough it should be able to do what the Sony does via a firmware update. But even if the processors are 1-1 it comes down to us programmers, which company, Nikon or Sony, devs are doing a better job. Hopefully the devs at Nikon can improve the AI in the focus with the current Z6 within the first quarter of 2020. Making focus point move via the back touch screen is both firmware and hardware so that may be dependent on how fast the LCD touch sensor can keep up even if the firmware has the function added that will determine its usefulness assuming its added. If previous 2 can be updated via firmware in Q1 that would only leave only the glass, that's 100% hardware so they really need to get a grip on that ASAP and make glass for Z faster. I love my Z6 but it could use some firmware tweaks for sure on the AF which is supposed to be coming soon so this video may have been too soon. Z50 is great and Z70 should be even better. Continuous development and Continuous integration would get the Z AF up to par quickly and could even surpass on the firmware side.

A fair and honest video... I'm a Sony user but admire how Nikon's images look, and also am wondering how Nikon manages to 'squeeze a little bit more' out of the Sony sensors they use in their cameras than Sony does lol! You truly seem to be 'torn' between the two... Btw the A7R IV feels fantastic and it's autofocus IS a jump from the A7R III; this camera that originally was trashed for being a 'minor upgrade' has a lot more going on underneath the hood than people (including me) originally noticed and is now getting the credit it deserves.

Sony has great cameras and I hope you will be satisfied with it. I want to comment some thing you mentioned in your video that I find not true from my perspective.
    1. Z monut glass. FTZ iz the key! All my FX lenses work great with FTZ adapter. I have f/1.4 lenses and shoot with them. I really don't know what should I do when Nikon release faster Z glass but I am not willing to replace all my great FX lenses just because of new mount. Moreover because I use FX camera as my second body.
    2. I really don't now what kind of problems people have with Z6 focusing system (I presume everybody has latest version of camera firmware). For example, I just shoot one Christmas event with Tamron FX lens and FTZ adapter. About 400 pics, most shoot with eyeAF. Maybe 10 or less were out of focus.. I am very satisfied how AF is preformed. It really confuses me when people complaining about AF..

Z6 is huge step over DSLR IMHO. I will point some key features you could find interesting.
      1. EyeAF. Focus and recompose is history. Shooting wide open is great with Z6 eyeAF.
      2. AF system and back LCD. Most of time a shoot looking at back lcd screen and rarely trough viewfinder (mostly in bright light). Here are reasons.. My eyes do not serve me as before, I must relay of camera AF system. I have ability to shot low, middle, and high ground. Shooting from head point is boring and limiting. Shooting with primes and holding camera in one hand give me ability to have some focusing range by moving hand and not to have to move myself.
      3. IBIS. My prime lenses are now stabilized. Finally solve problem with my shaky hands. :)
      4. FTZ..Work great. I have Sigma, Tamron and Nikon FX lenses and they all work great!
      5. Low light ISO performance. With f/1.4 lens and Z6 I never need flash..
      6. Ergonomics.. do not need to elaborate this..
      7. Silent shuter, USB-C charging, XQD card speed, connectivity with android, jpeg from camera, etc..

But at the end all those minus you listed, made me deciding to divide my equipment between sony and blackmagic. On more reason is the bigger accessory ecosystem that they have built around them ( cages, handles, gimbla adaptations, log and luts ) wich Nikon does not have.

This is one of the best reviews I've seen on CZcams. It's a real help to have Jared break down the reasons for moving over to Sony while doing justice to the good points of the Z6 and its image quality while backing that up with his own shots. When you are looking to buy a camera, you can make a fairly informed choice if you do some research, but what you cannot do is make an informed choice based on years of experience and use of the cameras in the field. It's so helpful for Jared to provide that, speaking from his own extensive knowledge and experience.

At the moment I‘m really glad ablut my decision and I love the system so far. Yes I don’t like that there‘s no vertical grip and no holy trinity yet. If you watch too much CZcams you feel like Eye-AF is the only important thing on a camera - but its not! :D ... Thats the oly category Sony is realy ahead (the lens problem of new systems is already 2021 obsolet)
Only pro real photographers are interested in the new 2500$+ RF lenses ...but Canon offers no pro RF body for them???? (what a silly plan) ... Nikon offers "prosumer" body's + prosumer lenses that's a plan I can understand ;-) ...Nikon professional have only to wait until next year for that pro body + pro lenses.
By the way the Z6 can now record ProresRAW! ...which Sony camera can do that? :)
PS: XQD or CFExpress is way saver than the old SD cards! ...on CFExpress you can only destroy the last picture at an error but not the hole card like on SDs! That's more than enough for prosumers!

Great video. I can’t dispute much here, even though I’m all-in with the Z system. I thought long and hard about an A7III and an EOS R but just love the ergonomics, menu, button layout and overall experience of shooting with my Z6. But the four f1.8 primes, the 14-30 f4 and the 24-70 f2.8 are the perfect lenses for my needs. I hate adapting lenses, but since my Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 G2 is my only F-mount lens, the FTZ just stays attached to it, almost like it’s a part of that lens. I will admit it’s frustrating that Nikon hasn’t released a fast portrait lens, a macro lens or the 70-200 for the Z system yet. I can wait, but don’t want to wait too much longer. I have noticed that yourself Tony and his wife, Matt Granger, the angy photograpner, in fact most of the you tube pros really use the evf and the touchscreen is something you comment on as part of your youtube responsibilities. Autofocus it not that difficult. Even eye autofocus. Look at portarits you took ten years ago with a film camera. I'll bet the eyelashes are vey clear in the majoiity of shots. Mine are, anyway. Since I have a few f-mount lenses and the adapter works well, I'm somewhat "invested" in Nikon. I also don't understand the obsession with wide-apertures. For most of my career, I hardly used f/1.4 or less. So, my next purchase will be the 85mm f/1.8S and a second Z6 body.

The complaints you have made have been complaints I have made as well. It seems both Canon and Nikon started their mirrorless offerings in the same boat but Canon is actually trying to right the ship while Nikon is just standing around

Yeah, you are right about Z50. As Jared said in the video Z50 is better than Z6 in terms of autofocus. It's the reason why I sold my Z6 and keep Z50. I love Z50!!

Thank you Jared! This was exactly the advice I was looking for. I've always been a Nikon shooter and researching the jump to full frame and mirror-less. I've been contemplating Sony for quite awhile.

Nikon will soon have a Z8 or Z whatever that will be ~61 mp like the a7r4. Hopefully that will gain them some more market share.

I have stopped watching videos about equipment from all these so called youtubers, this video reminded me how nice it is not wasting time on this kind of content. It is much better watching videos about photography. Watching this video was a great reminder not to spend time on videos about equipment. Jared was much better in this one though. By the way, I have Z7, no doubt the best camera I ever owned, maybe the Sony is better, do I care? Not at all.

hello folks and Jared, i need help with a friend, we went to a photo shoot, and it was in studio, and i have a sony ar7iii and my friend has a nikon z6, now what happens is when using a flash trigger and studio lighting, @ 1/200 and f5.6 and iso 100, both him and i would have EVF and lcd BLACK OUT, i could focus for a tenth of a second, the shoot, but could not spend time setting up composition...(i could not see), and the same with his Z6, OK i was able to figure out the Sony has a LIVE VIEW setting, (setting effect on/off) so setting it to off, i had a great day,,,,but the Z6 i could not find the same setting.....only a view finder and monitor button.....is there a way to get the nikon Z6 to do the same as Sony....thanks for any help

Be Free TV 50 1.8, but if you want portraits, get the 85 1.8, can’t go wrong with either.

Be Free TV yeah I was thinking something nice and within a good budget , but if you can get the d850 you can most likely get great glass, so yeah 24-70 2.8 is a good start

I jumped ship to Sony with the a7III in November of 2018. The Nikon Z cameras didn't have the Eye AF on release that I _knew_ was going to help me shoot faster (kids are difficult to keep up with), I wasn't a fan of the Canon options, and I knew I would be able to get the lenses I wanted on Sony before Nikon released equivalents on the Z mount. Also helps that half of my lenses were manual focus anyway.
Does the a7III feel good in the hands? No. Of course not. Is it too small? For me, a little bit, but not uncomfortably so. Is the menu system good? I wished Sony had Nikon's menus when I switched, and I wished they had Canon's menu system the second I picked up a T6i to teach someone how to shoot in manual. But did it do what I needed it to do better than any other option at the time and did it have the lens options I wanted/needed? Yeah. It did. And it still does.

Very cool level headed response from Will of "Monochrome Memoirs". He thinks that Jared's observations are certainly valid and Sony is a fair choice for his use case (my paraphrase). Will and his wife, on the other hand, are running their entire wedding business on a set of four z6's and could not be happier. For them the Z6 is a fantastic tool just the way it is, with the superb ergonomics and image quality. (again my paraphrase). He worries NOT about what Jared said, but rather, he worries about how AGITATED people get about this issue -- too much attention on the "brand wars". "Too many people are focused on what the camera can do for them instead of what they can do with the camera." See: czcams.com/video/refEt1DRBQw/video.html . 7 min.

I replied in a similar matter. Jared has no clue what is in his hands IF he can't master a camera system in a year. 🤦🏽‍♂️
This guy talks about Auto Focus, yet does zero sports. So why is this guy mentioning that? We know he can't master the camera already, same goes for it's autofocus system.
This is blog video stuff, period. This isn't real world, this is CZcams personsality world.

I'm thinking of upgrading from my D800 to the z6. I considered the z7 but I must admit the low light capabilities of the D800 due to the high MP count is something that has been bugging me so I think the z6 with the FTZ adaptor is the way to go for me.

I’d personally like to thank Nikon for releasing affordable 1.8 lenses first instead of $3k 1.2/1.4 glass. The z mount 50, 85 and 24-70 2.8 are tops of their class and optically every bit as good or better than canons RF glass and considerably cheaper, lighter and smaller. A half stop of light isn’t worth $2k extra for me.

The desire for 1.2 glass came from film days when anything over ISO 1600 was all grain, todays cameras shoot clean up to 6400. So it is an advantage to have 1.8 glass to save weight and money.
