A glutton who eats sweets, is generally lazy, and is the plump and lush desire of a hungry wolf. The girl they chose, while talented and character-wise very on-point, is thin and athletic. Red isn't meant to be either of those things. She's meant to be thicker and chubby, maybe thinning out some as the second act and the months between unfolds.
Gabrielle Rice Well, I think she fits perfectly, she's very talented and her cheeks are chubby. And it's stated that she ate *all the sweets* and half the load of bread. She isn't running through the woods, either. She's skipping, taking her time to get to Granny's house. In the Baker's shop she is literally stealing and eating food. She even says she hates to leave; Which could be her way of saying that she doesn't want to leave for one of two reasons: 1. She's too lazy or 2. She wants to stay at the shop to eat some more. The prologue even describes her as 'A hungry little girl who always wore a red cape.' But hey, that's just my opinion.

One of my favourite things about into the woods is this scene. It really emphasizes what the whole point of the fairy tale is. It shows how when the original story was written by Charles Perrault, although it takes on the Brothers Grimm ending. It has that creeping feeling that there is something not quite right about the wolf. Through the way he acts and how he talks, he really is a predator but not in the way that we may think. Yes he wants to eat little red but if you look closely "Eating" could herald the 1810 ending where the lesson was for young girls to be weary of cunning men who would "Eat" them up, take something so valuable from them that it could cause great distress like little red after the whole ordeal.

I never got this as a kid, but rewatching this now at fifteen, every single word makes me feel disgusted. Johnny played this role a little too well...
