  • 2 days before the British Open Paramotor Championships and I'm heading down to Bulldog Paramotors in Swindon to buy my new paramotor. With only 1 day left I get the new paramotor run in, test flown and efficiency tested. Make sure you catch next Thursdays video for the final prep before the paramotor competition.

      Parajet make some lovely machines but the Bulldog just has it for the type of flying I'm doing & being feature rich

    Daniel, I had my first practice launches the other day on a Bulldog & it felt really weird compared to practicing with a ground handling harness. I did well & the majority were successful launches but I couldn’t feel what the wing was doing & didn’t have feedback when things went wrong. Is this because of the high hang points & how do you ‘feel’ what your wing is doing on take off? How does launching technique differ between a low hang point & the Bulldog?
    I’m at the point of ordering a machine & it kind of put me off the Bulldog as it felt so alien to me.

    • @DanielJonesParamotor
      @DanielJonesParamotor  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey, I totally understand the feeling you’re describing as it was exactly the same for me. I couldn’t say if the experience would have been any different on a different hang point machine. I imagine you’re talking about when you’re moving forward either from a forward launch or after turning on a reverse?
      It does take a little while to get used to the change from GH to motor but something that can be mastered quite quickly with repeated launch & land practice.
      The main thing is to keep moving forward, don’t hesitate. You need to give your wing the airspeed it requires for lift. If you’re doing a forward launch on a low to nil wind day, it’s paramount to setup your wing properly. If you take the time to lay your wing out once it’ll save you having an aborted launch, expended energy and setting up again. Don’t half arse the first setup.
      When you center yourself on the wing for a forward. Pick a point thats dead in front of you when cantered. Take two steps back, power check and take a deep breath. When you’re ready, and this is crucial, put your hands out, up and back to give you the best tension on the A’s when inflating. Keep on the A’s on the way up. You should be able to, with a bit of experience, feel where the wing is as it’s coming up. If your hands are coming up symmetrical you’re good. If one hand is lower than the other the lower hand has the lower tip, move forward but also diagonally under that side. Sometimes if it way of it’s better to abort that try and salvage and out of wind launch.
      I would honestly say I’d launch with the same technique on a low hang point machine if I was to fly one. The only difference may be that some other frames can’t take a power on forward which then requires a lot more on your behalf to get the wing inflated by running.
      Do you have the option of trying different motors where you are training? That’s truly the way to see what works for you.

      @@DanielJonesParamotor Thanks for your fast response Daniel. Yes, I’m going to clip in & try a Parajet & the Bulldog again & do some practice launches & ground handling. I do all the things you suggest Daniel & I really enjoy launches but I was on the point of ordering a Bulldog & then had this experience & wondered if the lack of feedback was due to high hang points, or it would be like that with any motor on my back for the first time.
      I like to feel the wing & I felt as if I’d lost sensory input with which to make decisions.
      Or I haven’t learned how to read the new set up yet.
      How do you feel / know if your wing is wrong when launching a Bulldog?
      In my ground handling harness I feel it in the tension & angle of my risers, but with the Bulldog I didn’t know I was losing my wing to one side until it was too late to recover.
      Have you ever flown a Parajet Daniel? Do you have to launch differently? Do you get more feedback at launch?
      I will find out how they are different tomorrow I hope, but I just wanted your opinion as well.

    • @DanielJonesParamotor
      @DanielJonesParamotor  Před 3 lety +1

      No problem! You may find that the high hang points are giving you less feedback as a low hours pilot but it’s definitely something you can tune yourself into. It’s all in the practice but at the end of the day you’ve got to go with the machine that is right for you.
      There may also be some weight in the fact that there mores pressure with a motor on your back and things tend to happen a lot faster (especially in the early days). As I said go lay out makes your life easier regardless of motor.
      I’ve never actually flown a maverick although I’d like to one day to get an idea of other brands setups so I can give a rounded opinion when people ask which machine they should go for. The best way to tell is to fly both but take into consideration it’s not just flying but living with the motor as well. How easily can you get spares, cost of spares, storing it, does it break down and travel easily, what other features make it the right machine for you.
      Reverse launches are pretty much all the same regardless of machine. However, I don’t know how you’ve been taught to forward launch so I can’t say if the technique will be different. I will say the maverick doesn’t take as well to a powered forward compared to a Bulldog literally last night a pilot at Wingland did a power forward and only just chopped through his D riser. I’ll need to look at the footage but that could have either been just a slack riser from layout or the Mavericks cage flexing. Regardless, too much power on a powered forward is not good. I’ve clipped the tips off of a prop from gunning a power forward.
      Anyway, I hope this has helped a little. If you’ve got Facebook drop us a message and then you can call and have a chat if you wanted 👍

      @@DanielJonesParamotor You really are a gent, Daniel. Thank you for taking time to reply to me & give me so much good information. I will absolutely try all the things you’ve suggested & see how it goes. Thanks as well for the tips on reading the wing with a Bulldog & it has given me some things to focus on in training tomorrow. I really like what I know about the Bulldog, but I will compare it to the Parajet & then decide.
      You should think about teaching this stuff as you’re a very good communicator!
      I don’t have Facebook, as so many people I like got banned, I decided to resign in protest. But, I really hope to meet you one day & shake your hand.
      Keep doing your thing Daniel & sincere thanks again for your help.
