  • Ballast & Track Weathering.
    Video V.42
    In this Video I explain how I do my ballasting using my super quick
    tamper tool for sleeper ready ballast.
    I also demonstrate track weathering using two different methods to suit easy and advanced levels.
    Video features:
    * Ballasting track
    * Weathering with Acrylics
    * Weathering with Powders
    Deluxe Materials - Ballast Magic
    Can be used mixed with your ballast before laying on the track for an easy smooth ballast look without being disturbed from water spraying during the curing process.

    Very useful indeed, thanks Garry! And thanks for including those of us who don't have an air brush.

      Thanks Andrew
      I will add if using powders use almost dry brushing keeping very light effects as powders do tend to settle slightly heavier on ballast and something I think I went a little heavy on in this video
      Do some testing if you can
      But still works well.
      Take care buddy 😉👍

    Very interesting on how ballast is applied. I cheated an bought a kit to slide along and feed ballast. Still had to use dry brush to do final trim. Colour ballast was a mixture of dark and light brown. Happy as it was first go. Next step rust treatment, but that's another day. Great video Gary, will keep watching for more ideas.

      @sparkshot Před 6 lety +1

      Richard Swallow - this is why I won't buy one of those ballast hoppers. You still have to muck about with a brush for 5 minutes even if you use one....so no point IMO.

    • @cheekytek
      @cheekytek  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks Richard
      Tampering the ballast gets the track looking neat the sides is just levelled to suit
      The ballast levellers are great but something I really struggle to master lol 😆
      I guess there’s no right or wrong way on ballasting as it’s personal preference to what a modeller aims to achieve.
      And that a good thing 😁
      Thanks again buddy

    Great how to Gary. Iam glad you showed two methods one with and without using a airbrush as many dont have access to or feel confident enough to use one. must say both ways came out looking great mate. i was very impressed with your weathering powders method I've not used them in the pas think Think Iam going need to brush up one my powdering skills got lots of rolling stock to do at some point lol. I used a woodland scenic's paint pen thingy to do my rails then went over it all with a can of Humbrol sleeper grim the only thing with the humbrol spray can is you can not control the direction very well I Dont think it came out to bad in the end. Thanks for sharing ... Cheers .. Pete

      @cheekytek  Před 6 lety +2

      peter yeah the spray cans are slight overkill and make a hell of a mess been there lol 😆
      Never tried the rust pens they look good.
      End of the day there’s no real right or wrong as it’s all personal preference to what is to be achieved and have fun along the way
      Great discussion Peter
      Take care my friend

    Hi Gary. Thanks for the tips with the electric toothbrush and the vaseline. I always used thinner to rub off the enamel colour on my rail tops. This is very time consuming. But smearing a bit of vaseline on before painting it should be much easier to remove. Guido

    The vibrating toothbrush is a great idea for settling the stray ballast, thanks.
    How about painting the sides of the rail with your airbrush before you ballast? It's much faster than hand painting with a brush (you can fly with the airbrush), and you don't run the risk of getting patches of the rail-brown paint on your ballast.

    • @cheekytek
      @cheekytek  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi David
      Many thanks yeah the tooth brush works a treat but everyone has many different methods
      The paint on the rails was really to demonstrate a possibility of doing this without an airbrush as not many modellers have access to one
      Personally I did all mine using an airbrush and god dose it save time but again it’s each to there own but I do agree
      Many thanks again
      Garry 😉👍

  • @sparkshot

    I prefer to weather track with diluted brush washes followed by dry brushing. Doesn't look too uniform then as airbrushing often does. I have an air brush but reserve it for locomotives.
    By the time I set it up then cleaned it after use (full strip - always - no exceptions) I could have finished a section or two with a brush so no point for me!
    Interesting vid though. Vaseline and vibrating brush was a good couple of nuggets. :)

      cheekytek - No probs.
      Will try your vas' trick next time.
      I also have decided to reserve the air brush for enamels only. Don't know if you have noticed or not but acrylics are a bugger to clean. They seem to dry up inside the airbrush workings alarmingly quick. It could be the paint brand I was using though.

    Hi Gary, that was a great how to and it looked fantastic, I don't have a airbrush I have been thinking of getting one but there are things on my list that come first. How ever I have rusted all the sides of my track with a paint brush and done all the sleeper and it does look effective, I have not done any ballasting yet, and after watching you do it with the powders and what a great job you have done I will get some powders and have a go when I do the ballasting, that's what I like about your video's they are always interesting and you always learn something from them. Thanks for a very interesting video, could you just tell me the powder colours again because my earing is not great and I could not catch what colours they were. Thanks again for sharing. Regards George..

    • @cheekytek
      @cheekytek  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks George
      Use a thin 10mm brush for the sides of the weathering so it dose not creep to far off the shoulder of the ballast / start small and work in.
      The 3 powders used
      RUST / IRON OXIDE / BLACK
      Certainly mix the rust and iron oxide - with a touch of black to look like sleeper grim
      More black will feather it in 👍
      Thanks again and more videos are on the way.. so I will keep you all busy 😉
      All the best Garry

    Garry, thanks for that tutorial, as I’ve said before, I just need to bite the bullet and start experimenting with these powders. When you first applied the red oxide I thought ‘oh no’ but with the additional application of black to blend it in the results are very good. I had it in my head that powders were used dry but with the addition of water it’s really just producing a paint to your own colour palette and is probably much easier to work with. Now, where did I put that test piece of track? Paul

    • @cheekytek
      @cheekytek  Před 6 lety +2

      Hi Paul
      I’ll be honest it’s certainly a technique to use powders on track but they are easy to blend
      I did go heavier on the oxide but which did panic me at first lol
      But the black and rust mix blended it together - small brushing is key I found otherwise the powder creeps out to far
      Adding water work really well and dry instantly with a great Matt finish results

    Air brush is the way to go! Thank you Garry. For idiots and heavy handed people like me this how to is very informative. It really does transform the ballast work. Where do you recommend finding a good airbrush? I would like to start researching it although I'm not due to go home to Australia for sometime. Cheers mate, very much appreciated. Jerry

    • @cheekytek
      @cheekytek  Před 6 lety

      Jerry
      Airbrush by far as my vote.
      There’s a flood of Air brushes on the market and I guess it’s what you feel would suit.
      I started with the basic Neo range from a art supplier as apposed to China imports
      Then I bought a high end air nozzle which being small are not so expensive but the better quality makes the brush perform better
      I recommend going simple easy brushes that press and go before diving in to top of the range.
      Badger do a basic entry level that is a great starter and I still use for easy jobs as now again
      Then see how you get on / not the easiest thing to master but persistence and practice will prevail
      Not the best advise I can give as I’m still learning but hope it’s god for thought
      All the best Garry 😉

    Really nice tutorial, but im wondering dont the layout become to noisy with out rubber or cork ? Regards

    • @cheekytek
      @cheekytek  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi buddy
      I have used cork completely under all my layout - incidentally I do find that the ballast didn’t set hard on it due to being soft, and leaves little holes time to time, however there is a range of products that can compensate this,
      In the video did I show a test board that was the best way to clearly demonstrate this weathering process as used on my track.
      As to noise my layout is based in a shed so noise wasn’t really an issue, I do feel it is important to consider as you’ve pointed out if this is in a loft or a intend to video as noise will echo around drowning out video or absorbing through walls etc
      Hope this helps and a great comment
      Many thanks and all the best
      Garry

      I’m sure your find if you look at prototypical images of railways in the BR Era as I model you will see new track work over time has a dirt dusting that blends to all its natural surroundings.
