In the 1960's (before electricity!) at an outstanding small, private, liberal arts , co-ed, wealthy college, they still used black and white marbles in bags to select members. "Blackballed" was the term. Each sister would go up, secretly select a marble, then slip it into a velvet bag. Witnesses were women alums from town. When the bag was opened, if there was one (or more) black marbles, that rushee was dismissed. Other pretty brutal procedures were used during each round of rushing. A photo was put up, discussion made, then the marble bag. A panel of the house's "best men" was also used to rank candidates' matching these guys' ideas of them being in that sorority. And so forth.

I get it! its brutal, but am I wrong in saying you signed up for it? I really mean that am I wrong to ask that

Sigma Kappa here from up North, great vlog. Wait until you're on the other side next year. You think rush was grueling, it's just as bad on the other side. Exciting, exhausting and fun, all at the same time. My college had only 4 sororities to choose from. I can't imagine going to 12 houses - ouch. My college also didn't have greek housing, so rush for us was all in our student center. Working on rooms starting as early as 6am and leaving around 1am, especial on the last night. Rush is done differently now, than when I went through back in the late 1980s

@@TheLakers24788 If I had to do it over again, I would choose not to go through it. I was one that did not base my entire person on the sorority. I was active in ROTC, was a member of the college dance/pom team along with doing colorguard in the marching band. I had other friends outside the sorotity. I was outcasted a lot, because I didn't get 'all in and my entire being' into the sorority. I love what the sorority represents and all the Philanthropy. I had a lot of 'catty' sisters. I guess I was more mature then what they were. It was like catty highschoolers who didn't get it until they grew the hell up.

@@TheLakers24788 these 'catty' sisters, did end up growing up and out of their 'mean girl phase'. I still hold dear to my heart what the sorority truly means instead of the people I had to deal with. It was the organization I fell in love with and still hold it close to my heart.

Congratulations! I hope you have an amazing time at UoA & your sorority, and recovered easily from Covid!
(Side note: It is so bizarre to me that nobody was wearing a mask on that crowded bus?? No wonder you got Covid! I'm from New Zealand, have yet to get Covid, and I am so thankful we still have mandatory mask usage on public transport and airplanes. No hate intended or anything, I am just genuinely baffled by how little regard is given to preventative measures in the US! Keep safe!)

Not all campus' are like this. On my campus, the black sororities were very dominate on the 2 campus' they were on. I actually enjoy the diversity that my chapter had/has become. Back in the late 80s, we had one black member, one India Indian member and hispancis. We were a commuter campus (no dormitories nor greek housing), so rush was quite a bit different. We were lucky to have around 200 girls rush as it was a smaller satalite campus of the main University system. Remember, Alabama just started diveristy not that long ago. If you have 1500 girls rushing, not everyone will get a bid. Legacies play a VERY LARGE part down south. My sorority got rid of legacy standings across the country about 2 years ago. In ths South, legacies alone could fill an entire pledge class, not allowing anyone else a chance to get in. It's highly and very, very competitive in the South than it is in the North. I found out I was a Chi Omega legacy after I rushed. I think it was better not knowing, as a lot of people put lock, stock and entire being of getting into their 'family' sorority/fraternity. I think that pressure is more in the all black sorority/fraternity organizations.
