My 1st concert was Ronnie McDowell & Conway Twitty in 1981. It was me, my mom, and my dad's mom. We got their autographs after the show and my grandma was walking on clouds afterwards. I can still see her skipping back to the seats.😁
I once heard a DJ call Conway "the best friend a song ever had". 👍👍
Oh yeah in the late 50s, he was touring around Arkansas at the same time as Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks.
His singing was amazing. He "growled", spoke, and sang. Emotions came thru his songs. Sounded so sincere.
My all time favorite singer! I am so glad that I got to see him perform in the early 80's before he went to heaven. RIP Conway! Great analyses of him, Phil! Thank you!
I do love Conway and yes he speaks to me directly. I remember where I was the day he died.
Thanks for including country music among all the genres you cover.
When a Family Guy episode needs a distraction, they cut away to Conway Twitty - brilliant.
Yes, i agree this is pure country. I miss that sound. I thank you for all you do.
Conway, Harold Jenkins was the real deal, when he came on the radio we just mellow out and enjoy, my husband is related to him somewhere down the line, Thanks Fil.
Now honey ,that is country! Love from Texas.
WOW SUCH A SOUL PACKED SONG 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Saw him live once. He was great. I say that very sparingly. Even older, he smiled and had the audience in his hand.
My mother worked for a record distributor back in the 60s. She was so excited when she met him at the office one day. She said he was such a lovely gent. Funny I still have that memory after about 50 years.
Outstanding! Thank you for pointing out the story part of good country music. It is so lacking in today's "hits". There are songs with literally 9 words in total repeated.
My hubby says Conway Twitty knew how to use “off pitch” perfectly. I think we’ve been listening to you too much. This is one of my favorite songs. Country music as a whole isn’t my thing but good stuff is good stuff no matter the genre. Hubby says I just like listening to you talk. Could be but I don’t find him leaving the room when I’m listening. Lol. Thank you.
He and Loretta had great songs. Love "Louisiana Woman/Mississippi Man".
Just how good is he.....sensational! Conway’s voice and his style of country music is up there with the very best ever! Excellent Fil! Cheers Mario! 😀👌🤘
Conway Twitty, a legend, Dolly Parton in my opinion is the Conway Twitty of female country music. They both put their heart and soul in the vocals no other could do, so heart felt.
When Country music was real country music....None of this Pop Nonsense of today!
You have to remember Country music has always from Jimmy Rodgers and the Carters to today reflected the population of the South. People like Chet Atkins changed Country music. Each generation changed it. And, each older generation swore it's version was the true music. Just look at my comment about a fun gig. Old - Conwat Twitty, Newer The Band - Lady Beetles - I ended up working with a publisher in Nashville - (East coast bar band to country music demo sessions)
You said it. Today new "country" music sounds like Hillbilly Hip Hop.
@@sue08401Ha ha Sue! You mean you don't like Country Crap...oops, I mean Rap? I have to to admit I do find myself singing, "Gonna take my horse to the old town road, gonna ride until I can't no more!" much to the chagrin of my family. 😁
@@conniebrown6909 You need to get schooled son. There's a lot of great rap artists out there. Keep an open mind and you'll find some gems.
Tom is a mark that is stuck in the past. All music evolves through the ages. Tom is loves the old style and so do I but to say that the newer guys doing their thing isn't "real" shows that he is an old fogie. Try to open your mind, Tom. Good music moves and evolves. From a 53 yr old country music lover who also enjoys some stuff of today.
From "It's Only Make Believe" to "Hello Darling" Now that's a stretch. Conway, One of the best. I love the sound of a pedal steel. THANKS, Fil.
Your smile was priceless when he started singing.
Knew Conway in his Rock n Roll Days He used to play the Night Owl Nice guy RIP
...I can just imagine millennial British girls rolling their eyes as soon as they hear that woeful steel guitar sound, getting ready to be bored to death with American C/W genre', but the more you explore his top 30 songs you find a rich variety, a variety you cannot find anyplace else in the world. A solo guitarist could make a career out of playing only his songs. Conway made a lot of money apologizing to girls for his infidelity....My personal career started with his songs
Lonnie Christopher I’m American and rolled my eyes too. Now I’m 65 years old and still have a hard time with twang music but I appreciate it’s place in music.
This twangy country music of Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Buck Owens, Marty Robbins, Merle Haggard, etc., is what would be playing on the car radio, windows rolled down and volume up, while riding with my dad. I would hide on the floor boards dying of embarrassment, but now I get it. :-) Thanks for taking me back.
When you hear .... " Hello Darlin "..... you know Conway is going to be tearing your heart out. God Bless Conway Twitty.
I hoping you cha do an an analysis of The Cowboys Sweetheart. Ms Suzy Boggus. I wanna be a Cowboys Sweetheart, Outbound Plane, Red River Valley.
Rock on !.
The famous Conway Twitty growl. This is one of my mother’s favorite songs.
There you go again Fil...taking me down the road to my childhood memories!!!
Thanks for this. I saw him in concert many times. The last time was at Dollywood just a few months before he passed. Legend gone too soon!
I LOVE Conway Twitty!!❤
When I was a kid in the early 70s his songs were on the radio a lot. He is my very favorite Country singer.😻
Love all the research you do, Fil, as always, but my question is: How can SUCH a sad song make me feel SO HAPPY??!! I feel that he's spilling his guts out, and I'm enjoying it. 😁 In real life, I'm actually not that heartless.
I think it's his sincerity that really resonates with me. I also LOVE "It's Only Make Believe", and would LOVE to see you analyze that. 💕💕👌
I love that you let the song play and just listen. You don’t pause it ever 30s to comment.
I just love this guy Fil and his analysis. Super impressed with his wisdom and he does really enjoy it.
Great smile too.
Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Conway Twitty!
AAAhhhhh... you beat me to it... Nah, I'll comment it anyway. ;-)
I took my mom to see Conway.. surprise guest was Loretta Lynn! My momma went nuts! Haha she always thought there was a lot of chemistry there . Hahaha he has an amazing voice live!! ❤️Tennessee
My request for a future analysis video is: Lynn Anderson, "I Beg Your Pardon, I Never Promised You A Rose Garden", LIVE performance, BBC Top of the Pops, 1971. Very fun video, and Ms Anderson is GREAT in this one!! I have ALWAYS LOVED this song, since I was a kid. The message of it always stayed with me, plus it just has a very catchy tune.👌❤
Another legendary figure of late-20th-century country music that I've always resisted, but now know how to appreciate. Thank you!
I saw Conway right when this song was a smash hit. I've seen a lot of the greats over the years but I've never heard an audience explode like they did after the first two words of that song.
Conway BEST Ever...
As a kid, when I saw him on "Hee Haw"( American TV show- rural demographic😉), I thought this was so corny & uncool. But as an adult who grew into a Patsy & Loretta fan thru films, I can appreciate the classic style & sweet lyrics~ Glad ur well, Brit Mr. Holland! ✌
Ah be honest ... it is pretty corny :D
Conway Twitty a country legend with a ton of hits. Very recognizable controlled voice. Good stuff. Thanks Fil!😎🎼🎵🎶🇨🇦
Conway is an all time classic. Also, I would love to see you analyze Elvis's Mystery Train! It's my very favorite Elvis song!
Spent a lot of time in bars in 1970 and that song was constantly playing on the jukebox.
Awesome job with the Conway video. You are like the legit history channel of music. Love how you cover all genres. I'm a huge fan of hard rock. But I have to say, the talent of these early country musicians is phenomenal. I love this music! And this is coming from someone who enjoys White Zombie, Rage against the machine, Slayer, Primus, Ministry, Led Zeppelin, Rob Zombie, Franz Ferdinand, Muse, Modest mouse, B52s, Molly Hatchet, and most of all PRIMUS! And many more, but damn... Nothing compares to these old country greats! Love them all. Thanks for sharing great music and music history to the masses.
Such great memories he gave so many of us with traditional country. He was called "the growler" because of what you call "vocal fry". Miss him and his music so very much! Thanks, Fil. 👍🎸💕
Fil, Conway did have an unofficial title. He was known as 'The High Priest of Country Music'!
My favorite country ❤️ singer.
Great country singers are storytellers. Conway was a master in selling the song.
I'm not a great Country fan,but I like the real Country music such as the one we are listening to at the moment...Patsy Kline,Conway, and Merle Haggard! This is a beautiful song!
i guess im randomly asking but does anyone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account?
I stupidly forgot my password. I love any assistance you can offer me.
@Cade Moses Instablaster ;)
@Israel Shiloh thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
@Israel Shiloh It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my ass :D
@Cade Moses No problem xD
You should check out “Slow Hand” or the duet “Mississippi Woman, Louisiana Man”. He was a master deliverer of music.
(Oh Hello Darling! Morning Fil with that million dollar smile). I love this about you. You are "Rock" but you are listening to Country and explaining so much which takes a true artist/musician!👏Stay healthy and have a good day Fil. ❤💕😍😙
I saw Conway probably ten times growing up, by himself and with Loretta.. These artists made their money off of record sales and you could see a show for ten dollars or so back in the 70s/80s. I saw all the great country singers/groups growing up and didn't realize how lucky I was.
One of the top creators of the famed 'belt-buckle-polishing' songs of the 70's. Anyone that's ever danced to this will know what I'm talking about!🤣 Great review on ol' Conway.. thanks Fil!😁👍
Fil this is one of the Texas National Anthems respect so many two steps so many love stories
FIL, THANKS FOR A GREAT VIDEO, AND YOUR COMMENTS, I ALWAYS HEARD GEORGE JONES SOUNDING LIKE CONWAY, I GUESS HE LIKED HIS VOCALS, STAY SAFE, MY BEST, YOU ROCK, COUSIN FIGEL
Beautiful song!!!!
I am crying my eyes out!
"A song's best friend." Loved his music.
"A best friend a song ever had." That was one of his titles. The High Priest of country music,
My mom and all her friends loved country during this era. I hated it, or at least I thought I did. Now when I hear those old country songs I know all the words and always have a smile on my face XD
Thanks, Fil for doing such justice to Conway Twiity's voice. I was seven years old when "It's Only Make Believe" hooked me like a marcotic to Conway's vocal fry and what I refer to the low growl which only added to the soaring crescendos that knock me out to this day! You're addressing and explaining them is sooo gratifying to someone who's tried to engage others in this same conversation only to get that "deer in the headlights' look of "What's she getting on about this time?". Thanks for not only getting it but elaborating in a learned way about it! ❤️
Get ur country on ✌😎
Fil covers all the bases on this great channel 😆🎸
Pitch... smitch... it's real & sounds good & that's what counts ! 😉
Thank-you again Fil ! 😆🤘
Keep healthy and safe everyone ☺
💜 💛 💚 💙 💖 💙 💚 💛 💜
Caught me by surprise with this analysis! A true legend in country music! His backup band was the Twittybirds and they were good.
And for a good number of years he had a park named 'Twitty City'. It has since closed.
I was kinda hoping you would perform a snippet or two of this song to explain key parts! You would have been great!!
Ralph Harwood Larry Bird was the twitter image. Conway was a nastier Bird.
Hi Fil! I absolutely love Conway Twitty! I loved you doing a song from my youth! Brought back so many happy memories! You are so good at covering so many different sounds, and generations! I appreciate that, and makes me very happy that you are the one site I choose to support as a patron! You deserve it!✌️
Thanks Suzanne!
Wings of Pegasus ❤️
...fine job on mama’s heartthrob, Fil...thumbs up, bud...
Cutter
Takes me straight back to high school. Danced so many times to this. Great stuff
Oh my gosh, love Conways voice.
I’m always fascinated and learn so much listening to your song reactions and analyses. Thank you.
This man was an underrated vocalist.
Conway Twitty, talented and under appreciated.
Yes he was ❤️
Underappreciated Now , in the '60s and '70s he was a major star .
The saddest songs in he world. The pedal steel guitar is certainly very effective - is it Pete Drake?
The biographical notes are interesting. "It's only make believe" brings back memories - I think I must have been about nine when that came out!
Thanks very much, Fil.
My mother was always listening to country music and Conway Twitty became one of my favorites.. ( I liked alot of C&W singers ).. due to his delivery and vocal. He was kind of unique and so was his hair. You did a full on analysis, wow, the Philadelphia Philly's! Good research Fil, and 🤟!
OMG! I actually almost cried with that one! but then I laughed instead, hahaha! Great analysis Fil, and performance. Love that vocal fry and country twang
Conway Twitty was one of a kind in county music and indeed any musical genre..
Hello Darling!❤️
I’m a Rocker , but enjoy,many different genres of music 🎶.
The beauty of finding new talent and techniques.
He always sung this song straight to me, he always had that effect
Fil, I love listening to your analyses even though I'm no musician but you explain so well and you have so much respect for the singers of my era. Way back now in the 60s. Thank you.
I'm a sucker for this type of country music.
This video really brings back some memories. My mother was a huge Conway Twitty fan. I remember hearing her play his records, along with Charlie Pride, and so many others over and over again on our big stereo cabinet. Also, your comment about not really hearing the musician play, but concentrating on the vocals, reminded me of other singers like Janis Joplin.
Conway Twitty had 75 top 10 hits in his amazing career !!
My wife's favorite singer of any genre.
An amazing song and performer. His style was and is completely unique. And that hair! Absolute perfection. Another great video, Fil. Cheers!
I love your reviews/critiques .... especially the old country stars. You are very knowledgeable about music.
Thankyou Pegasus. You know I know we never tire of this.
Professor - and I don't use term carelessly, the ability to recognize and explain a phenomenon is not just a gift. It's also the residue of hard work. Explaining how an artist expresses the story and emotion, and also the technical aspects of musicianship is about 'bottling magic'.
Aw now are you gonna show Conway and Ms. Loretta? Loved them singing together. Or even George Jones and Tammy Wynette?
Saw Conway in January of 1970 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, just about the time this song was being introduced.
Many will know of Conway's associates in Memphis, Presley, Cash, and Perkins but some might not realize that at the very first Mr Twitty wanted to be a rock n roll star. He copied his pompadour after Elvis ' hairstyle of the time. However, he quickly realized he did not have a future in nascent rock n roll and so he took his music in an entirely different direction. While he is not my particular brand of country he was a mover and a shaker in his day and l have much respect for him and his music. And l don't mind listening to it one bit.
The reason I have heard of this artist is because of Family Guy. Random footage of him performing was dropped into episodes. But not sure if Seth McFarlane is a fan or did it ironically.
@@jimmycampbell78 Probably the latter, knowing his hatred of Southerners. Plus, he fancies himself a singer, in that show-tuney/greasy lounge-lizardy style.
But Family Guy IS funny in its puerile vulgarity.
Thanks FIL for this video. He was my mother's favorite singer. This brings back a lot of memories. 💜
Always enjoy your analysis and appreciation of good music. Genre is irrelevant. Good is good.
Thoroughly enjoyed this review of some great country music! Conway made some awesome rockabilly recordings in the late 50s too before he made it big with country. How about a review of George Jones next? The king of country music! Any live performance but "he stopped loving her today" since it's already been done so many times before. "Things have gone to pieces" is a great example. Keep it up! Thanks!
OK funny story Fil!! I shared this on my facebook page last week and tagged my 75 year old Aunt because Conway has always been her FAV, and I learned very quickly why and now I wish I didn't know!!! LOL Here's the copy/paste of her response "Danette Carroll, You just made my day!!! Milton would call me from the pool room and play that for me!!! ESPECIALLY IF HE’D BEEN NAUGHTY 😉" ...…….I'll never be the same, gee thanks Fil! LOL
Freddie Fenders cover of Before the next teardrop falls around this time is as just as soulful #Sunnyside of excellence
“belty-sound” is Conway’s signature....Only Make Believe will forever be my favorite.
Thanks! Michael Jenkins used to drive my Brother to school when we lived in Mississippi in the 60's. He crashed his car in our front yard. It was late and very dark. NO SHOIT! My Mother thought a boat had exploded and called the police. NO! That was Michael hitting a tree in our front yard. Me and my Brother slept through the whole thing. Never even saw the vehicle. It was gone by morning. They found the engine in the next yard. Small world.
Actually 72'. I was in 6th grade.
George Jones performed this song in memory of Conway Twitty. People in the audience were crying and George's voice broke in a couple of places. Very moving. Check out the video.
I’m a fan of your channel. I love the diversity, the history as well as the technical aspects you review. You appear to have a genuine respect for the music of the past as well as the different genres. I loved the David Gilmour review and was really pleased to see the Willie Nelson ain’t it funny how Time slips away on your channel. The Redbone review was an unexpected treat. You come across as a very personable fellow. I have to say if we were pals trading bong hits, I would be asking you say “Conway Twitty” every 10 minutes! Being a native Californian with no accent, I can appreciate yours! The closest we come is “dude”. I grew up in Southern California during the 50s and 60s with my family moving up to Oakland in the 70s for the Bill Graham and KSAN era. I could spend days watching the midnight special and soul train episodes of the past. Good on you mate! Keep it up!
Thanks!
Well. There aren't many people in this world who really understand music the way you do, thanx Fil...
👍
Part of the charm of the song is that it deals with adult situations in such a charming manner. The sentiment is there, the emotions are dealt with respectfully-
"So there wouldn't be much harm in having one more drink and shagging for old time sake." A kind of hello how are you how's your uncle?
Fil, love the fact that you would spend the time on a genre that would appear to be so outside of your sweet spot. Always love the vids
Thanks!
Nothing like a bit of old country to warm the cockles of my heart. I actually never liked country music at all until I was posted to Hong Kong. It's amazing how your musical tastes can be expanded just by spending an inordinate amount of time in bars!
Uncle Bob - Tell me about that bar time - I didn't know I knew so many songs until several drinks later.
I saw Conway around this period...his band consisted of just drums, bass, steel, and Conway on lead guitar using a Telecaster. Conway was a great guitarist.
Your analysis is spot on
My dad probably loved this song❤️. Thanks for the Analysis.. I watched the whole thing😁
"I need a distraction! Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Conway Twitty!"
