My 1st concert was Ronnie McDowell & Conway Twitty in 1981. It was me, my mom, and my dad's mom. We got their autographs after the show and my grandma was walking on clouds afterwards. I can still see her skipping back to the seats.😁
I once heard a DJ call Conway "the best friend a song ever had". 👍👍
Oh yeah in the late 50s, he was touring around Arkansas at the same time as Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks.

My hubby says Conway Twitty knew how to use “off pitch” perfectly. I think we’ve been listening to you too much. This is one of my favorite songs. Country music as a whole isn’t my thing but good stuff is good stuff no matter the genre. Hubby says I just like listening to you talk. Could be but I don’t find him leaving the room when I’m listening. Lol. Thank you.

You have to remember Country music has always from Jimmy Rodgers and the Carters to today reflected the population of the South. People like Chet Atkins changed Country music. Each generation changed it. And, each older generation swore it's version was the true music. Just look at my comment about a fun gig. Old - Conwat Twitty, Newer The Band - Lady Beetles - I ended up working with a publisher in Nashville - (East coast bar band to country music demo sessions)

I was seven years old when "It's Only Make Believe" hooked me like a marcotic to Conway's vocal fry and what I refer to the low growl which only added to the soaring crescendos that knock me out to this day! You're addressing and explaining them is sooo gratifying to someone who's tried to engage others in this same conversation only to get that "deer in the headlights' look of "What's she getting on about this time?". Many will know of Conway's associates in Memphis, Presley, Cash, and Perkins but some might not realize that at the very first Mr Twitty wanted to be a rock n roll star. He copied his pompadour after Elvis ' hairstyle of the time. However, he quickly realized he did not have a future in nascent rock n roll and so he took his music in an entirely different direction. While he is not my particular brand of country he was a mover and a shaker in his day and l have much respect for him and his music. And l don't mind listening to it one bit.

OK funny story Fil!! I shared this on my facebook page last week and tagged my 75 year old Aunt because Conway has always been her FAV, and I learned very quickly why and now I wish I didn't know!!! LOL Here's the copy/paste of her response "Danette Carroll, You just made my day!!! Milton would call me from the pool room and play that for me!!! ESPECIALLY IF HE’D BEEN NAUGHTY 😉" ...…….I'll never be the same, gee thanks Fil! LOL

Thanks! Michael Jenkins used to drive my Brother to school when we lived in Mississippi in the 60's. He crashed his car in our front yard. It was late and very dark. NO SHOIT! My Mother thought a boat had exploded and called the police. NO! That was Michael hitting a tree in our front yard. Me and my Brother slept through the whole thing. Never even saw the vehicle. It was gone by morning. They found the engine in the next yard. Small world.

George Jones performed this song in memory of Conway Twitty. People in the audience were crying and George's voice broke in a couple of places. Very moving. Check out the video.

I’m a fan of your channel. I love the diversity, the history as well as the technical aspects you review. You appear to have a genuine respect for the music of the past as well as the different genres. I loved the David Gilmour review and was really pleased to see the Willie Nelson ain’t it funny how Time slips away on your channel. The Redbone review was an unexpected treat. You come across as a very personable fellow. I have to say if we were pals trading bong hits, I would be asking you say “Conway Twitty” every 10 minutes! Being a native Californian with no accent, I can appreciate yours! The closest we come is “dude”. I grew up in Southern California during the 50s and 60s with my family moving up to Oakland in the 70s for the Bill Graham and KSAN era. I could spend days watching the midnight special and soul train episodes of the past. Good on you mate! Keep it up!

Part of the charm of the song is that it deals with adult situations in such a charming manner. The sentiment is there, the emotions are dealt with respectfully-
"So there wouldn't be much harm in having one more drink and shagging for old time sake." A kind of hello how are you how's your uncle?

Fil, love the fact that you would spend the time on a genre that would appear to be so outside of your sweet spot. Always love the vids

Nothing like a bit of old country to warm the cockles of my heart. I actually never liked country music at all until I was posted to Hong Kong. It's amazing how your musical tastes can be expanded just by spending an inordinate amount of time in bars!

I saw Conway around this period...his band consisted of just drums, bass, steel, and Conway on lead guitar using a Telecaster. Conway was a great guitarist.
