Many of you have wondered how I made this psychedelic vocal synth sound heard in my track Numinous: czcams.com/video/31SNN3cPceE/video.html In this video I'm going to show you exactly how it's made using libre software.
Wow dude!! A nice coincidence :-D Last night and today, I've started listening to all my old fave Goa/Psy Trance - Hallucinogen, Cosmosis, Total Eclipse and rounded it off with a little !Mahadeva! by Astral Projection - perfect jogging speed that one is for me! Also, very clever title - "Infecting the Mushroom"! I was also trying to think of their name earlier, as I have a friend in work who wants to get into production and I know he likes them.
Thank you, great video! I am trying to learn to create some own tracks and this is a great way to see what is possible. However there is also so much more than I expected that goes into producing a short track like this, so I guess I still have a long way to go to create sounds the way I imagine them.
Fancy effect. I only wondered why you took such a complicated way via a second (silent) instance of Helm. MIDI controlling of autotune is clear. But to control a gate using a synth in between? Couldn't it be easier? I already thought about it before and I ended up with a now superfluous function in one of my plugins. But, the easiest way would theoretically be connecting the MIDI channel to a velocity to CC plugin and CC control the gate. Did you try Robins (x42) note2cc MIDI filter plugin?
Hey! I haven't tried another approach to sidechain gating, mostly because the one I've landed on gives me a lot of control. With Note2CC, could I control the attack/release? Could I have more resolution than just on/off? A synth + a sidechain gate allow me to do that all - it's very flexible. I'd love to see a demonstration of that approach, as I'm skeptical it would be better :D
I actually preferred the glitchy/rough/distorted sound when the gate starts to flicker with a short release! :3 41:52 But yeah, controlling the gate more directly via the MIDI notes might be more straightforward to set up. I wouldn't expect the end result to be appreciably different, though.
@@unfa00 I was talking about Ardours "hidden" MIDI learning function ( ). You can connect almost everything in Ardour (faders, buttons, ...) with any incoming MIDI signals (not only CC). So, you can also connect any control in the plugins generic GUI with incoming MIDI. And with the right MIDI routing you can also use internally produced MIDI signals. The resolution of MIDI CC is 7 bits (0..127). As for the most of the MIDI signals. Not only on/off. In theory you can directly connect a control to a MIDI NOTE_ON signal. The result is a controller that is controlled by the velocity of exactly this note. Take care that a MIDI NOTE_OFF signal is not a velocity zero signal. So you have to add zero velocity notes for a rest. Or you take x42 midi note2cc. Here you have different ways to convert a MIDI NOTE_ON signal to a CC signal. A nice way is the cc-value=key option that allows you to draw your CC values in Ardours piano roll. For sure, there would also be a lot of other and more elegant ways if you combine Robins x42 midifilters. As you asked for a demonstration. I should crack the nut with a sledgehammer and make a video with B.Shapr ;-). As I added MIDI CC (or optional CV) export to it a few weeks ago. The only possible disadvantage of CC over sidechaining is: you manipulate plugin controls. Like with an automation curve. And plugin controls are not real-time. But this doesn't play any role in the most cases.
How could I not know about Dexed? :D I find the envelopes to be very unwieldy though, and I just don't use it personally. If I need multi-operator FM, I usually go with Zyn-Fusion or OxeFM Synth (simpler, but much easier to use). Though I might challenge myself to make a track with it at some point - who knows?

Amamzing ideas. Well done, unfa! *Thumbs up*
Unfa, I'm sorry but you look exactly like the GNU mascot with that beard.
This DAW needs a lot of work but I like the concept
Lol, where is the cowbell? ;) Just kidding :D Cheers from Warsaw!
That was a great lesson, I learned a lot about sidechains.
Awesome, thanks!
Thank you unfa, very cool !
Surprised you're not using a vocoder!! Great video!
I love Infected and psy in general, great video as always ! BTW I saw Ardour 6 got just released.. are you planning to do a video on that ? thx !
Hey! Thanks! I'm taking a launch break from editing that video right now.
Great sound! Do you know dexed? I wonder what you would do with it...
He, wanted to make a Video about it, but the Sound Design is really not that easy

I hear 4 on the floor and I switch off though ...
Hey, it's psy after all! Not sure what you expected to find.
turn bias of autotune to zero
"Let's make this kick very quick. Pun intended." What pun? Not every play on words is a pun. And this isn't one. It's a rhyme. Good video though. :-)
Ahhh snap! You're right. Thanks :)
