    Excellent video; showed me exactly what the issue was and how to fix it; fortunately my gear wasn't cracked so I just added a dab of super glue and pushed it back in place. Oh, and I found the narrator's dry humor very entertaining!

    i found out that in older models when power supply is tued over that allways capacitor 4700uf 16v is dead. And thats main reson cd wont work.. I repair 7 allready.. Bose probably used low quality capacitors. Even dim displays ar allways cause because of bad capacitors. For display replace all 50volt capacitors round display. And place one with litle more microfarads..

      Yes I saw that in the Bose update and fault finding guide. I generally don't cover capacitor faults as they are easy to spot and repair.

    I have many CDs and most of them work in my Bose Lifestyle 5 CD player. But I have five CDs that simply will not work. These 5 all work in the laptop (though the sound is awful) and in the CD player in my car (Toyota). But I simply cannot get the 5 to even begin to play. Think it is not the problem being addressed in this video but I cannot find help anywhere else. Has anyone any suggestions about what I might do? - apart from buying a new CD player.

      CD reading is a marginal business. Some CD read better than others. For marginal CDs good drives may be able to read ones that a cheap/failing drive cannot. Have you tried a CDC head cleaner. This is typical the behavior you get when the lens is dusty. It may also be an aged laser diode.

      @@razenby Thank you for replying. I will try a CDC head cleaner. The CDs that will not play all have a similar appearance though they were made in different countries (USA, UK Australia. Others of similar appearance play quite well. Two discs I bought because I rarely hear the pieces played - and I still can't listen to that music. It is a puzzle.

    HI, very useful video! With the one for the display! Thnaks! Could you advise the laser diode specs - mine is gone as well. Regards!

      @razenby  Před rokem

      You can buy the laser pickup head on AliExpress for a few dollars. Don't forget to use anti static precautions and remove the shorting solder blob that protects the diode after it has been connected to the circuit,

    Very helpful. Can anyone advise where I can source a replacement CD drive? My problem appears to be a mechanical issue. The drive is skipping and making a clicking noise. The straight plastic tensioner that contacts with the plastic drive wheel that moves the laser along its track appears to have lost its tension. Any guidance on where I can source a replacement drive would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello, looking at the PCB at 4:38 you see a large blob of solder on the lower left side under the screw, now follow those traces to the laser, not strange those two pins are shorted? could it be the case that the blob is there to protect the laser diode from ESD before installation and someone forgot to remove the solder after install?

    • @razenby
      @razenby  Před 3 lety

      There are 3 solder blob joints on most CD mechs. On these two are to set options and the third is for the laser diode static protection.

    I had the same problem with the CD player not working. But when i check the cd lens for red light, it lights up alright. But it still does the same thing as yours in the video, it spins a couple of times and stops. What could be the problem then?

    • @razenby
      @razenby  Před 3 lety

      You can't tell how bright the Laser is by eye as 90% of the light it is out of your optical range. It is not advisable to look directly into it. They often partially fail and lose intensity. If you don't see the focus mechanism going up and down it could be the focusing coils or the drive chip/ wiring etc. Inspect it carefully to see if you can spot anything wrong.

    • @djdeaf13
      @djdeaf13 Před 3 lety

      @@razenby Thanks alot for the fast reply. I couldnt see any light from the lens with the bare eye, but using my phone camera, i could clearly see it turn on and off in red. But it is not as bright as yours.
      It was a very strange way it stopped working. Cause the cd player worked, then it startet skipping tracks, and then it just stopped completely. But if i then openede and closed the lid, or maybe pressed forward a couple of times, it would start playing the number, only to stop again after some time. But now it dosnt work at all, it just makes that sound as the lens tries to focus, and the 0(circle) is shown in the display.

    Are there similar components (capacitor, diodes and chips) that you identify as problems for this model on the original Bose radio with CD player that control the cd module? I am trying to locate and identify highly suspect components that cause my cd unit not to go into the spin cycle and play. After cleaning the pc board with contact cleaner, the unit did start up and spin but not play. This then stopped again. I did install a new laser unit without any resulting change. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    • @razenby
      @razenby  Před 3 lety

      I have seen on the web that the variant with leaded capacitors with CD issues can be fixed by changing the capacitors in the CD drive chip area. I have worked on the surface mount SMD. Remember to remove the ESD shorting link on the Laser pickup????

    • @lorettacaputo6997

      @@razenby I just came across a web page I think on Antique Radio repair where an individual made mention of replacing 22uf smd capacitors in that cd area. I will have to look closer at the caps in that region on my specific Bose unit. I wish I could come up with a schematic or a video that identifies the specific region of the board that is highly suspect. Thanks.
