  • In this video we will discuss what a worn drivetrain looks like. In this example, the chain has worn the chainring, cassette and pulleys on the rear derailleur. I am a father to two wonderful boys, Nicholas and Alexander. I am a bike shop owner/bike fitter/coach in San Marcos - San Elijo Hills... and Hall of Fame Ultra Cyclist - of 3 different cycling organizations.
    I climbed 1,000,000 feet in 2015 in only 10 months (legitimate gain no iPhone Strava app or Elevation Correction which gives you more gain). I repeated 1M feet of climbing in 2016 and 2018 and 2019 I have also Everested 9X -- 29,029 feet in one single ride #everesting .
    I currently hold the record for the shortest distance Everest in North and South America 29,200 feet in 78 miles.
    I have been named a legendary Ultra Cyclist- a title I consistently work hard to live up to because of what it means in the small ultra cycling community.
    I completed 2- Person Race Across America (RAAM) in 2007. I have finished the Furnace Creek 508 SOLO (508 miles 35,000 feet of climbing non-stop race) six consecutive years in 2006, 2007 (Fixed Gear) 2008, 2009, 2010 2011, then came back in 2013 (tandem) and 2014 (Tandem) 2015 (tandem) and 2017 as a Two Person Mixed setting the course record with Lori Hoechlin. A total of 11 Furnace Creek/Silver State 508 finishes with a PR of 28 hours 52 minutes. I was inducted in the Furnace Creek 508 Hall of Fame class of 2011.
    I am a Trans Iowa finisher (only 57 finishers out of 250 participants in the last five years at the time). Trans-Iowa is 320 mile (course varies yearly) totally unsupported gravel race held under adventure racing format.
    I have also attained Super Randonneur (200km, 300km, 400km and 600km unsupported events) multiple years. I am a cycling coach with clients ranging from endurance cyclists, competitive triathletes, and beginners just entering the sport of cycling.
    And now that you read all of that - I am also just an everyday Joe, just like you. I own a bike shop work and 60 hours a week, have a family, have a coaching business and try to do ultra events on limited training time. I’ve never been a professional cyclist. I do what I do out of passion for the sport. I suffer just like you do. I get it done out of pure stubbornness, pride and perseverance.

    Is that amount of corrosion common around there? I don't see that here in Texas unless someone has stored their bike in the same room with chlorine pool chemicals (It doesn't matter if the chemicals are in a sealed container The chlorine gets out.)

      What corrosion? I don't think the rustworms really live in California.

    does a worn chain and rings slow your bike down much?

    • @SeeYouUpTheRoad
      @SeeYouUpTheRoad  Před 2 lety +3

      Hello Jim it won’t slow you down much. But on one end of the spectrum the shifting will be sloppy and on the other end of the spectrum it can be unsafe even dangerous if you get out of the saddle and sprint and the chain falls off the chainring - yes that does happen!!

  • @DivineMisterAdVentures
    @DivineMisterAdVentures Před rokem +1

    Not only that but look at a new one - Shimano doesn't use the same grind on the smallest chain ring as on the biggest. It's because the small one never gets shifted up to, just down to, and it always has gravity assist (so there is usually a smooth surface) the Big Ring has no gravity assist so it gets the full HG treatment. Somewhere there must be an appropriate engineering text on this. Those chain gaps will occur - slack the chain tension and lift it up and see if it flows with your finger. It won't flow, it will kink because of corrosion, which affects some kinds of chains worse than others. ⛑

    Hi Gorge, why are some rear derailleur pulleys directional?

      That's a great question that I don't have a specific answer for.... hmm... let me ask around.

    Surely just lubing the chain will allow the chain to sit further down on the cogs?
    Honestly I don't see any reason for replacing these parts until you start missing some teeth

      These components (chainrings, chain and pulleys) are excessively worn! There is no question whatsoever that these components need to be replaced. There is no grey area on this particular example.

      @@SeeYouUpTheRoad Ok but what impact do "excessively worn" components have when riding the bike? If the chain doesn't slip I can't see any performance or safety improvement to be had here. Just wasted money

      @@petermarshall8750 that’s the point Peter the chain was slipping. The customer came in thinking she needed a derailleur adjustment. She’s not that strong of a rider but just by me starting off from a stop the chain was falling off the chainrings. THAT is a safety issue. I’ve seen it when people ride worn out chainrings and/or chain and then do a surge or a sprint in a pack and nearly cause a crash for the rest of the group.
      I don’t understand people like you. You argue with an experienced mechanic and shop owner who is liable for the safety of the customers who bring their bike into my shop. I tell you these components are excessively wrong and you argue with me.
      When things are worn they get replaced it’s not wasted money it’s what you do.

    • @SeeYouUpTheRoad
      @SeeYouUpTheRoad  Před rokem +3

      @@petermarshall8750 FYI - there is no point in cleaning or lubing a completely worn out chain. You mentioned on a couple of occasions that lubing the chain will make it fit better on the chainrings. The chain is so worn and the chainrings are so worn that lubing the chain wouldn’t fix anything.
      We are at an en passe - you are frugal and don’t want to replace components that need to be replaced. I, on the other hand, am responsible for providing exceptional care and consider the safety of my customers especially my inexperienced riders. When riders have worn items replaced on their drivetrains they notice the crispness of shifting performance returns. Happy and safe customers make loyal clients in the long run. It’s just what you do when you run a good business.

    If she doesn't want to spend the money to keep the bike in good working order then she should just give up riding until she can face the facts. You can't just replace the chain at this point.

      Hello Charles some people just ride their equipment into the ground. They are shock to learn that things wear out that things need to be lined and cleaned often. They just ride ride ride. They are not performance driven they are recreational riders. Then when they come in to a shop the mechanic’s responsibility and the shop owner’s liability is to inform the rider on all the items that need replacing and return to them a solidly performing bike. Unfortunately, a recreational rider’s budget and a properly serviced bike don’t usually mesh 😢
