  • Star Wars Galaxies went through 3 major eras. Pre-cu, CU, and NGE. But the CU as we know it was almost completely different.

    I unlocked jedi right before the CU came out in early 2005. I actually enjoyed the CU for the short time that it lasted, because I played a hybrid Teras Kasi Jedi with a lot of jedi healing and enhancement skills and during the whole summer of 2005, I spent my time fighting bhers that I got my pvp rating score up wicked high past 1800. I found early on in the CU that you could do Force Run 2 and use your fists and the damage wouldn't be mitigated down, because your fists weren't seen as a weapon. Therefore, I went over 3 months without dying to bhers and I was pretty unkillable to them as I always had some holocrons to replenish my force if my situation got dire. That summer of 2005 was a fun time to me as a former bher who became a jedi on Bria. I used to be the guild master of the bounty hunter guild, Bounty Hunter Society, so having all of my old friends turn on me and try hunting me down was fun as hell.

    The command queue and chatting during combat is definitely something I missed after the NGE. We noticed many people that left after CU, to be returning, after the initial upset, right before NGE killed the game entirely. So, I feel that given time, the CU would have worked well.

    NCSoft recently brought City of Heroes back from the dead by granting an emulated server the official license to the game, allowing for CoH to rise from the ashes once again. Imagine SWG and Vanguard SoH getting the same treatment + also adding a little facelift and some new features and expacs. I'd buy that for a dollar! Liked and subbed.

    What do you mean my guy. H1Z1 was the game SWG players could call home.
    Anyways, that HAM system is the one we had during beta 1 and 2. They scrapped it going in to beta 3 and gave us the 3 pools. It still worked the same but it was more of a background thing. I prefer the original system. One was the health. One was the resource. One was the regen of the resource. You could black any of the pools but the incap only applied to the primary pool. We used to black the secondary pools all the time just to be assholes. No need to kill someone and send them to a clone center when you could just black them and make them 100% unable to do anything until they healed those pools.
    As a funny side note, those secondary pool attacks which targeted body parts, could also be used to attack a person's armor directly as well. So we'd break your gloves or boots and then make you useless until you healed.

      I remember that H1Z1 reddit post. What a disconnect between developer and player lol.

    the exceptional and legendary weapons were an end game. Took me 2 years to find a 2000 max damage bowcaster, which was completely useless, EXCEPT against Jedi in PVP, having no armor so Strafe 2'ing them would one hit incap them if a hit landed. It was doing 10k damage per hit in PVP against Jedi. :D I miss Pre-CU.

    Hi rommi, thanks for the nuanced breakdown. It's nice that years later, we can discuss changes in a more thoughtful way. I recall most discussions in 2005 being more like flame wars.
    What's the deal with one-shots and squad leaders? have you discussed this before?

    • @Gospelgg
      @Gospelgg  Před 7 měsíci

      In publish 24, the last publish before the NGE, SOE revamped squad leader. Any Master SL had the ability to give a combination of buffs to a rifleman who could then use snipershot to 1 shot anyone. It was commonly used for base defense since rifleman had to be prone and there was a little bit of set up to it.
      For non-rifleman, though, you could easily bring someone's damage super high and they would be 2 shotting or something silly like that. There was basically no real counter play to it and seems like an oversight by SOE or maybe just complete apathy since the NGE was right around the corner.
      I really appreciate your comment btw. I'm also glad we can civilly discuss things almost 20 years later lol.

    I miss the original. I played it when it first came out and then the add on Jump to Lightspeed. Was an awesome game until they EverCracked it. I loved the customizability of chracters progression and that you had to unlock Jedi/Sith character through actual effort. My two mains were a Teras Kasi Doctor and a Sniper Bounty Hunter. Was also nice to have macros that you could program your attack string into for better game play. Grinding materials was a pain, but customizable houses were great.

    CU was a shock to everyone which was the biggest problem, but it was definitely a step in the right direction. After the initial shock I think most people got used to it and started to enjoy it, but then they ripped the rug out from us again with NGE. I think if the CU was properly advertised and explained and stuck with, SWG would've been a much better game.

    What got me the most was the stubbornness that SOE had in keeping the NGE after almost everyone left. I don't know what kind of business plan they had, but it was the wrong one.

    • @wild1234
      @wild1234 Před 7 měsíci +2

      Because that would admit that the players were right and the bosses were wrong. Can't be going and throwing away several months of work just because some nobodies complained, now can they? Don't worry, they are sure the players will come back, it's just a small loud minority overreacting like always...
      I know the only reason I stuck around after NGE was because I enjoyed JTL so much. On the ground I was a creature handler and medic. All I wanted to do was raise my critters and treat wounds to earn money to fly my spaceships with. NGE completely deleted my entire profession. After NGE I made my character a jedi purely out of spite.
      It's also a bit of a shame that so many people refused to ever try SWG again. It took a couple of years of polish, but they did eventually turn NGE into a fun game in it's own right. But on the other hand, I can't say that I blame people for not being willing to get invested again after being blindsided by the NGE.
      But then it all ended with the final nail in the coffin when they shut down the servers to try and force players to move over to TOR. For me at least, all it did was ensure that I never gave them a penny to play TOR. If they hadn't closed SWG I would have likely happily paid for both.

    I liked the CU. Everyone that shouts that Pre-cu was amazing are talking bollocks. So many players moaned about pre-cu before CU was announced, then when CU came out, they all said the pre-cu stuff they'd originally been moaning about was actually amazing.
