Everyone remembers the line “that’s just the way it is, some things will never change.” But they forget the most important part- the line that follows- “ahhh, but don’t you believe them.”

Bruce Hornsby left an indelible mark on the West Coast sound of the 1980s in California. A composer, musician and singer, Bruce Hornsby is equally at home in jazz, rock, funk, classical music and blues, and is also a seasoned and acclaimed bluegrass musician. He also played with the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia, before making a name for himself on the silver screen, in the film "World's Greatest Dad", with Robin Williams, or Backdraft.
The song was sampled by Tupac on the track "Changes" ft Talent released in 98.
Thanks and Happy New Year !!!!!

My first apartment was just across a creek and a street from an auditorium. The night I moved in, there was a music festival going on in the park on front of that auditorium, and when I went out on my back porch Bruce Hornsby was playing this song, and I could hear it very clearly. It wasn't my thing at the time as a punk rock kid, but I stayed out there for the rest of the concert. He was fantastic.
On theme: That apartment was a decent-sized 2/2 and cost me $365 a month in 1989. It now goes for $1700, with no significant upgrades. The cost of it quadrupled, but minimum wage has barely doubled in that time, and that was a complex marketed to freshman college kids with those jobs. We all had roommates. It's not like that now.

Bruce Hornsby, a native of Williamsburg, Virginia, is my all time favorite person in Rock and Roll, and a great musician, songwriter and human being. No wonder the Good Ol' Grateful Dead wanted him to play with them for a couple of years in the early 1990's. Had the pleasure of seeing him play live on many occasions, both with The Range, and when he played with The Dead, and he was always the same, FANTASTIC. Thanks Teez, hope you enjoyed it, sounds like you did.

Saw him in Germany back in the late 80's when I was stationed there because he was a local Virginia kid and had seen him earlier in his career. He saw racism up close and a lot of his songs are about the need for social change. Elton John once commented Bruce was the best pianist he ever heard. Hornsby also spent several years with the Grateful dead after Garcia died as their keyboard player. We'll know and respected in the industry and has never forgotten his Virgina roots.

Nah, he created something new , the original still stands. Tupac used it because both artists are spreading the same message. I’ll never understand why people think making something new outta something old detracts somehow from the original. It doesn’t, it just brings something new to an audience that mat not have been exposed to the original. I bet Bruce loved tupacs version because they are ultimately preaching the same message and that’s what’s important . They say steal like an artist , every artist does it , take some things you live and make something new. And besides , Bruce would have made plenty of money from tupacs version . If you don’t like it , don’t listen to it but it’s not stealing. It’s the highest compliment and a recognition of the great music, lyrics and message from the original. By your reasoning everything has been stolen because everything borrows from everything else.

@@steviefraser5240 Then why did Tupac not put on his record that it came from another artist, he tried to play it off like it was his , and I don't listen to music by fake artists, Tupac is another Willie Vanilly a fake artist does not have the talent to write his own stuff and did you see anything from Tupac saying where the music came from , Changes is a direct rip-off of Hornsby's music

@@steviefraser5240 Tupac took the the main parts of the song and put his name on it. Tupac straight up took Bruce’s work and claimed it as his own.
If Tupac was so talented he would have made his own music. As it is, he is a hack and way too many people bought into it.

@@MikeHart72 no , Bruce is clearly credited as the songwriter on tupacs version . He cdnt do it without permission . Bruce would have been paid handsomely to by mcps and the labels agreement . How is that stealing when all parties agree ? Not to mention that Bruce has put in record how much he liked tupacs version . Please don’t take this the wrong way but it sounds like you don’t know much about the record industry and how it works and seem to have beef with Tupac . He added his own twist and if Bruce liked it why would anyone else get upset about it ? It’s just another piece of art in the world , it takes nothing away from the original
