In the high country of central Oregon, Union Pacific trains sprint along the east side of the Cascade Mountains on a route originally run by the Southern Pacific. In Part 2 of this exciting series, we follow the Cascade Subdivision for 108 miles between Cascade Summit and Klamath Falls. With easy grades and gentle curves, this is a racetrack with speeds of up to 60mph for freight and 80mph for passengers.
Heavy manifest trains head south with lumber from the Pacific Northwest. Double stacks, grain, crude oil trains, the Gilchrist Local, and Amtrak’s Coast Starlight head back and forth through the beautiful countryside. Adding to the interesting mix of traffic, BNSF runs via trackage rights between Chemult and Klamath Falls.
In addition to the steady flow of trains, witness a Jordan Spreader at work pushing back the snow banks between winter storms. See brand new Tier 4 GEVOS making their first revenue runs over the Cascade Line, plus Canadian Pacific, Amtrak heritage power, and a GE center cab switcher at work on the Klamath Northern. Shot in all seasons over an eight year period between 2008 and 2016, the amazing journey continues through the Oregon Cascades.

This has become a Friday night ritual for me now. A frosty beverage and trains for 2+ hours.
I'm planning a 2 week photo/railfan trip out west this summer based a lot on your videos. On my list is Portland, Crater Lake, Oregon Cascades, Columbia River Gorge up to Kamloops and back to Portland. You have inspired me so. Your videography is top notch Aaron and the shot of the unit train at 2:08:14, dare I say it, took my breath away.
Thank you very much! Sounds like you have an exciting trip planned. Good luck with it!
I’ve been to all of these locations. What a wonderful adventure you have ahead of you! Enjoy!
Oh god I love the snowstorm railroading! This is some of the best railroading videos ever my friends. Thank you 7idea!
It's so dangerous but I love watching lol.
Never seen a bad production. Keep ‘em coming. 🙂🙃🙂
I have to take off my hat to 7 Idea production 😉.
Woah this is all the way back in 2016? This just transported me back in time. Beautiful production!
😊
Beautiful camera work.
This channel is excellent. Thank you. It's perfect. Love the length, the stats, and the details. Love the narration. Bravo guys, bravo. I'm hooked.
Thank you! Glad you are enjoying the content.
Let's all book an Amtrak for next winter Oregon to CA.
Interesting/informative/entertaining. Excellent photography job/detailed train route maps. Enabling viewers to better understand what the orator is describing. I noticed graffiti art work on box & tanker cars. Wonder if the artists are seeing 👀their creations on this presentation???😲. Had the good fortune to spend quality time in that beautiful region. This presentation brings back pleasantly relaxing memories -!!!😉. Viewing this presentation from the comfort zone of my computer room. Along the " Space Coast "🚀 of Florida 🐊🐊. Wishing viewers& R.R. Employees a safe/healthy/prosperous ( 2024 )🌈🎉😉.
Another great coverage with a lot of Coast Starlights, Jordan Spreaders doing snow removal, tons of freights and excellent cometary.🤠💯👍👆🐧🏴☠
We go camping at crescent lake all the time and at night you'll hear the trains work there way up the hill until they hit the crossing and blow their horn. It's one of the coolest sounds ever.
Thank you! I’m 78 yrs retired from Nuke plant retirement by engineering. Now as a child leav my bedroom window open.I was 7 miles from Pullman and Grand Junction. Big ass steam engines hauling ass after midnight. My dad was conductor. 1930’s/40’s . He would have engineer pull whistle if hitting 110/125mphwith 300-400cars😀. Heated caboose with coal or wood. My dad said h knew every Hoo-Boo. By name and protected them sometimes buying food. I’m dying but still miss hose fearless train engineer who rode those bad ass machine over 120 mph!😊
Thanks for braving harsh cold and blistering heat to bring us these videos
Thank you for making these available and seeing your great videos. I'm surprised at how much power some of these trains had. Eight engines for a 100 car oil train seems like overkill.
As far as geography goes there isn't much the state of Oregon doesn't have, which is why I love it here so much. Thank you for this excellent video and showcasing the beauty of the state through the southern part of the state
Another fantastic commercial grade production. Thanks for sharing these with us!
My Favorite route !
So the crew of the snow spreader will billet in the sleeper overnight? Hope they have a 3 star chef though please don't get me wrong, a 4 to 5 star cook they would deserve. Your work documenting America's railroads is stunning and so important to American culture or work history. The railroads touch so many as it exemplifies Americana . Thank you, thank you !!!
I can't vouch for the chef but railroaders usually eat pretty well. The car is used as a galley and probably carries extra shovels for switches. Crews are shuttled to and from the train by van.
Thanks Aaron for my "train fix".
This is the most fun part of a trip I took half a dozen times between Sacramento and Seattle on the Coast Starlight. Thank you for an excellent video!
Thanks for sharing!! Love the UNION PACIFIC!!!!
Looks incredible!
The wonderfulness of these productions is as follows -!!! Viewers whom not been afforded the opportunity to visit these beautiful regions. Can now have the opportunity of almost being there -!!!😉.
Thank you! That has always been the goal.
Wow! This is Heaven. 👌
Wish you'd show the whole trains. I enjoy seeing the different railroad cars.
I love your videos how do you guys stay warm
Warm clothing and hot coffee!
Wonderful sound of cars in the snow❤
Great video and footage.
Wonderful as always.
Incredible
Ein wunderschönes Video ❤ u winter Impressionen fantastisch..Greetings from Germany Cologne. ❤... Sie haben eine klare Stimme ihr englisch ist fantastisch.
Thank you!
These are excellent. I hope all the railroad video production companies bring at least some of their stuff to CZcams. No one buys DVD’s anymore
Me who got like 4 of 7idea’s DVDs for Christmas, including three titles they uploaded on this channel: you sure about that?
Super job! A real pleasure to watch!🚂🚂🚂
Crude oil, those were the days!
I really hope y'all cover the Oregon Trunk. The Siskiyou Pass line would be a good one too but I don't know how much traffic it sees. Maybe the Seattle Sub?
Thank you for another top shelf video. As a life long resident of British Columbia(whose railfan exposure is limited to CPKC nee CP, CN and good ol' BC Rail) your videos expose me to the workings of UP and BNSF in the western United States. Do you have any videos of UP from Hinkle OR to Nampa ID and beyond? Also video from the Oregon Trunk Line. Looking forward to your next video.
super video
How come you only do west coast trains?
Nice video! Say, when are you going to upload the original "Union Pacific's Cascade Sub Part 1" on CZcams first then the part 2?
That video was posted 5 months ago as "The long grade", this is just part 2 in the thru the cascades
@@aquaspire7671 I'm talking about the original Union Pacific's Cascade Sub parts 1 and 2. the first 7idea Productions two part DVD's from 2006 or 2007.
Thanks for the suggestion! It isn't in the immediate plans right now but I will keep your request in mind.
@@7ideaproductions Thank you!
