- Microsoft engineer Andrew Freund saved the Internet after he discovered and fixed a flaw that would have given hackers a master key to all publicly accessible Internet servers.

Why are people reporting on this that have no understanding on the source material lol
They are all so confused
Yeah why can't they report news as news without making fools out of themselves
The systems are open source for a reason. The powers that be want to take transparency away from the people so only they have control.
They didnt explain that the exploit was hidden inside a binary and therefore wasnt "open source" in the traditional sense
Today I entered a german supermarket, and saw a headline of the german counterpart of the British Sun. 'It was by half of a second - German saved the internet'
I knew about the xz tools incident, but would never have guessed it was this what they meant.
Im not angry, im just disappointed....................
Mock this all you want, half a second delay in computer time is a not so small eternity, it is noticable delay when using any internet based service, especially real time calls.
Also "social engineering" is a form of "hacking a person" you don't need a computer for, ever heard of "phishing mails"? Well the evolved form is apparently called "spear phishing", such a mail is specifically tailored to YOU in order to maximise you clicking on a link etc. and basically invite teh "bad spirits inside" and just like such a spirit/fey/demon the hacker once inside can do as they please and if they are really patient, they can lurk for a year or two to maximise getting everything they need to basically rob you blind when a long holiday weekend is happening, this is a specific scenario because we already had that happen!
If you type google into Google you can break the internet!!
You made a joke out of the actions of an individual who helped us all. Not OK.
