You can literally see the urge from him not to do the Vibrato in the first one in “The swan” 🤭
Exactly haha.
“like shaking a bottle of....”
me: “water”
him: “pills.”
LOL
_Very useful. Very useful indeed._
Your without vibrato demonstration was most impressive, few people can play so expressive like that and so many have the sickness of "vibratitis".
VIBEN ON DA BEACH
Came here because my cello finals are comming soon and no one taught me how to do vibrato, thank you, very nice ♡
I've been playing for 7 years and still can't seem to get it right. I'm doing vibroto but I'm doing completely wrong and it's become a habit that I can't seem to stop. I'm going crazy.
I completely understand you.
Same
Got to slow it right down, remove all tension. Play on harmonics at first as they will allow to keep your hand and arm more relaxed. Just start very very slow and very regular and the instant you feel any tension, stop and reset. Discipline and patience and you will get there
Don't mess with me!
I got the power of God and a cello end pin on my side!
Don't walk down the stairs with your end pin out... *winces*
This is absolutely the best lesson on vibrato I've seen. Thank you!!
Never heard better intonation from a cello player.
Great video! I had not seen the direction of the vibrato in ascending vs. descending passage explained before this, even though I have seen many teachers discuss vibrato.
Congratulations for your clear and well thought explanations, I often refer to your videos when teaching, they are really helpful. Besides your beautiful sound is inspiring too!!
The pill bottle metaphor helped me so much. Thank you!
Rachel O.
technically a simile
@@okuyasu4033 all similes are metaphors!!! not all metaphors are similes!!!
how come the cello also moves when I try to do vibrato? What am I doing wrong?
When applying vibrato, move your left hand in the same direction as the string (that is, up and down), not from left to right. The best way to practice this is to position your thumb exactly below the finger you would like to make vibrato with. Therefore, vibrato is usually the easiest with the index finger (and the hardest with the pinky).
Just one note: even if you do it correctly, the cello *might* still move, depending on the position of your left hand. If this is the case, try holding it more firmly between your legs.
thanks this helped a lot!
Emily Wong Vibrato is indeed more complicated than it looks. I still find myself struggling with it from time to time, and I've been playing the cello for 19 years now… Just keep practicing, and, very importantly: don't forget using vibrato! This might sound funny, but sometimes I am too concentrated on getting the left hand and the bow right that I forget about vibrato, particularly during short tones.
+Emily Wong I realize this is probably REALLY late, but you're moving side to side instead of up and down the strings. I did this same thing until my teacher corrected it.
Emily Wong you need to hold the cello more
This has really helped my with my vibrato technique!!
Nope. I am with you. Tapped proudly. Thank you for the video. Skillful, informative
I have a lot of the time problems to not cramp my vibrato and this video really helped my with this problem to start again and reunderstand it right. Thanks for this really good video
I previously played the violin and my vibrato is in violin autopilot. I need to vibrato on a much larger scale. My cello has such a beautiful tone that I automatically start using vibrato without realizing it. I was gifted a beautiful cello and am finally playing music after floundering around for 2 months. Learning to tune my cello and practicing bowing helped me to finally play music. Now I am on my way !
Thank you for sharing this video. Help me a lot. Thank you 🙏 ❤
Excellent!
Thank You
I gave that pitch vibrato pitches love vibrato
Im a newcomer to vibrato and this helped me a little
excellent you are amazing ty soo muc test tmr wish me luck!!
Thank you ... i will try it on my fretless bass!
Muito bom essa video aula de vibrato
Marvelous cellist and teacher. Hard to find better!
thank you... helpful
thanks Teacher!
Well I’m gonna say, people say vibrato on the 4th finger is the hardest to do, for me it’s vibrato on the 1st string
Same for me
Very interesting
this actually helps!!
+KittyCrumbs I used to use Cleartune. Now I use Tunables. BTW, I also still have tapes. I've been playing for two years now.
Yea I play cello at school and my teacher said I have to wait to know how to do vibrato to late succka
The swan first phrase is beautiful
Ugh, I'm so bad at this!!! >:(
Andrea Dong same boat
Same
It gets hella easy bruh, been playing for 7 years going on 8 and it gets really easy once you practice it
Thx
vibrato on the cello and bass is easy but on the violin and viola is where it gets challenging
BRLA WIPEOUT I actually find it easier on the violin than on the cello
Totally agree
Ikr
Do you play all of them? 🤔 Cello and bass have thicker strings, so I disagree...
i can kinda do the vibrato, but the fingers I ain’t using tend to curl into my hand. Is this okay? Still sounds great.
I’ve been playing since about half way through February and I love the cello. I’m staring to try vibrato but should I get more experience before I do this?
Well you can learn it but I'm afraid you wont do nothing with it. I'm playing cello for 3 years and I just learned how to do it, but my teacher teaches really slowly so maybe that can be the "problem".
Short answer: In my opinion you can learn it whenever you want but you should ask your teacher about if you could use it unless you want to learn it but do nothing with it
Once you've got the basics down I believe you should do it
I know how to do vibrato but it’s not wide enough. It holds me back and hopefully I can fix it.
I used to play violin and I can’t stop my habit of hand position, my wrist bends in weird way and I can’t seem to do it.
hello .. could it be that I have perfect pitch (oido absoluto)? in the minute 1:50 a very exact G note sounds
My problem is even though i can produce a kind of vibrato, my forearm doesn’t necessarily drive the motion, it’s more my wrist and fingers
moving the sound to the first position, almost touching the string?
whats the name of the piece on 0:33 help me please
thank you
The Swan by Saint Saens I think
What's the name of that song I play the cello
i play the violinthis proves vibrato on violin is harder cause we have to move our finger back and forth with the jointa of our fingers. not just moving it like when were shifting
at least thats what my friend does.
Irene Lee Perhaps more difficult in technique, but keep in mind that cello strings are much thicker and are painful to do vibrato on--or even push down for that matter. That is more strain on the fingertips.

Unlike the violin, it required me to build more calluses on my fingers to play cello, because it really hurt my fingers in the beginning. My teacher's advice to fix the pain, "Suck it up."
They are different instruments, but I found it easier to shift on a violin. 🤔
I'm sooo tired of people telling that their instrument is the hardest and trying to show themselves as the most awesome musicians because 'they play an instrument which is so much harder than the others'... 😂😅😄 It's ridiculous... Instruments are different! There are things that are easier/harder.. but it's so annoying when someone finds a technique which might be harder on her/his instrument, so he/she tells it just to feel more superior... 👑😄😃
I was doing it right all along then. My teacher said pretend to be drinking from a bottle of wtv. Like with your wrist moving up and down and not ur forearm so...well
Yeah, your teacher was wrong. Cello vibrato is always using the forearm. Using the wrist will will only end up with you having carpal tunnel or worse.
I need help with replacing cello strings. I am a life long clarinet player who had to give it up and started cello a year ago and I love it way more than I could have imagined. But the time came to replace my strings or so I thought. I ended up choosing D'Addario Helicore set and I don't like them not even a little and don't have enough experience to know why I don't like them or what I might like. I don't know why because I have only been playing for about a year. I loved what was on the cello when I bought it but I don't know what they were so I can't replace those same ones. The Helicore are hard to play, they don't respond well for me without force, the sound lags, it sounds dull and flat and I can't keep them in tune. The previous strings I rarely had to tune them and when I did they were tuned right on. With these I can't get a perfect tune, all the strings dance on the tuner and never stay green. I am wondering if these are for me experienced players? You can email me the answer
peggy
I also found Helicores to difficult to get good sound out of.
Try a set of Thomastik-Infeld Spirit strings. They are quite loud. You can usually find a set on Amazon for under $100
I prefer Jarger strings. I have the Jarger fortes on my first cello. They are a bit thicker than helicores but it brings out the lower tones quite nicely. I also use a rosin with gold flakes in it for the Jarger. The gold flakes help grab the string a bit more and gives it a richer tone.
I actually just got a new cello that currently has helicores on it but I'm about to switch this one to Jarger as well.
I have D'Addario Kaplans on mine. Crisp, clean, and EASY response, and I've only been playing for a few months.
qual o nome dessa partitura??...preciso saber
+Samuel Barbosa The Swan - Camille Saint-Saëns
So much better without vibrato - and that is especially the case with singing.
Tendras muy contenta a tu mujer granuja
Can someone tell me the name of the song? Thanks
The Swan
Camile saint saens the swan
The Swan by Saint Saens
Song ?
What's the name of the song he said?
The Swan
Partitura?
omg why is vibrato on cello easier that vabrato on violin!!! (cries)
so true xp
MereBear Minion ddude, it's not
Yeah no. I’d say vibrato on the violin is soooo much easier.
But then again, I started with violin soooo
I love them vabratos on fiddle
Meredith Villanueva because gravity. Cellists only have to move up/down while violinists have to go sideways/diagonal
But does it Djent?😀sorry
ok
I think he vibrated in his first piece at 39 seconds... ...maybe.
this vibrato directly shocked my soul: czcams.com/video/0F1X_Xax72I/video.html I wonder if it is due to the frequency matches that of my heartbeat or my soul's frequency
for those that can do vibrato, try playing Harry Potter with a lot of vibrato and it will sound edgy af. also www.musicnotes.com/ this website is great for illegally getting free sheet music. just screenshot it and print it out and boom (Harry Potter is on there if you need it)
When you are a Violinist and wanna see other instrument players suck at vibrato too
Am I the only one who struggles with vibrato?
Why am I here??? I play violin
anyone else learn vibrato by bending their second knuckle n wiggling their fingers 😐 anyone else play like that for ten years 😐 anyone else realise that their technique is completely wrong bc ur supposed to curl ur fingers n shake ur forearm 😐 anyone else feel like giving up cello forever 😐 im in hell
He played the swan incorrectly 😢
he’s so good because he does that to the girls
quacking ?
So lame. Fix you left hand first - and then MAYBE you'll realize something about vibrato.
he does that to his ladys
