When I was 13, I used to walk in the door from school at 3:30 p.m.and watched Where the Action is. Loved those Mark Lindsy and those crazy Raiders!!! Dick Clark was one of a kind.
I was fortunate enough to be one a group of students called to be extras and background when Where The Action Is filmed episodes at my high school (Corona del Mar High School, Newport Beach, Ca.). This was a couple of weeks before school started in the fall of 1965. They filmed for five full days to get enough footage to spread over 13 weeks of shows. Since it was a "closed" campus/set it was very casual and it was not unusual for the cast and performers to interact with us between shooting. I particularly remember sitting and talking with Billy Joe Royal (Down in the Boondocks) just before they paged him over the PA system to report for filming. I also had a great time watching The Yard Birds perform close-up, and Mary Wells being within arms-length during shooting of her singing My Guy. The most fun though was eating lunch (my best friend and myself) alone with Paul Revere and the Raiders. About halfway though the lunch break Mark and Fang got into a food fight. Great memories from that week with all the different acts performing all over and inside our campus - and we had a front row seat. Too bad this all happened before the VCR was available for home use. I'd sure like to have tapes of those 13 weeks (65 shows).
Fascinating memory recollection!! Thanks for the info. Enjoy watching :"where the action is" b/c of the music, perfomers, the times-60s child here-and of course Dick Clark.
What Great memories that show brings up!... Just THINK how fun it was to be around during that time...All the music was geared around good, clean fun!...WHERE is that time machine??!... I want to jump in it..tonight!...
Dark Shadows (Barnabas!!) and Where the Action Is! Could life get any better?! Miss those times. But now I watch Dark Shadows dvds, and WTAI on you tube! How fun!
WeI walked home from Our Lady of Loretto in Redford, Michigan to our house in NW Detroit. 'Where the Action is" was daily after school viewing. And if we were lucky, mom had cokes and snacks on hand! What a blessing.
Wow the 60s. What a great time in music history. I grew up in the SF bay area then and watched this show every day. My best friend and I loved PR&R and idolized Mark Lindsay. I actually worked with Mr. Lindsay a number of years ago and it was one of the finest moments in my career. Mark is the most humble man I've met in the business. His wife is Deb nothing less than fantastic. I will treasure the master tapes forever. Thanks for posting this video. Wish there were more. I can't get enough!
I was only 5 years old, but my older sibs and I watched this show after they came home from high school. I remember the theme song after all these years. Had a crush on Mark Lindsay...
4:30 every weekday on WABC. i watched it religiously and LOVED the Raiders. I have seen Mark Lindsay in concert and at 69, he is still the absoulute hottest man in the universe!!
As a teenager I honestly don’t remember this show although I love these videos here on. I remember American Bandstand and Shebang with Casey Kasem as I was on his Christmas show in 66 as I remember.
Brian, we can always count on you to dig up some old clips that brings back fun times from out past. Always fun to watch your dad having fun....glad to know he is still fun loving...
"Where The Action is" first aired weekdays at 2 P.M. EDT, premiering in June of 1965, and was intended as a Summer replacement. The show was intended to go off the air around Labor Day, when youngsters went back to school. But "Action"'s ratings were such that the show was continued, and as of September, moved into a late-alternation after-school timeslot, where it remained until the show ended in early 1967.
Loved this show when I was in Hiogh School, watched it every afternoon. I really LOVED the Action Kids, had the hots for Leslie Evans, she was a doll I could have spent all night with..........she had everythjing, wonder where she is now???? Of course there was Joy, Roberta and Jeni-Linn also, but Leslie was the best.
I was once at a place called Pickwick pool in Burbank. Dick Clark was filming WTAA and Paul Revere & the Raiders was on the show. Dick Clark saw us peeking over the fence & invited us in to participate in the show. Today, I have never seen that show.
It certainly was. Facebook has a wonderful group called Fans Of The Action Kids- Where The Action Is. Most of the Action Kids are members of that group. Please feel free to join.
This is something I had never seen it was on the same channel as Dark Shadows it came on after it . I was only 5 when this show came on so I didnt get to see how great it was, my memories stem from American Bandstand and Soul Train ;, they were all great too, good times
Tommy Boyce is today best known for co-writing (with Bobby Hart) most of the Monkees' big hits, as well as collaborating with Hart in both writing and singing "I Wonder What's She's Doing Tonight", a big hit record in the late 1960's.
I remember the opening scene had the dancers, dancing around the outside edge of the pool. There was one scene in the opening where I am sitting on the grass as they dance by. LOL, my ex-husband who lived in NY at the time, said he saw me sitting there and fell in love with me that day...yeah right...lol I also remember sitting on benches around the PR & R and doing that old fashioned 60's clapping. It seem's like it was yesterday.
I remember seeing this show on ABC in Los Angeles. The show would air in the afternoon. I would always wait to see Paul Revere and the Raiders sing their hit songs. They were a great talent. too bad that they were over shadowed by the stupid stunts that they had to do on TV. I think that's the reason that they have been so under rated as rock singers. I loved them for the great hits they had not for acting like clowns.
I was 12-13 when Action was on, and my big dream was to move to CA and become an Action dancer! I loved Jeri Lyn Stapleton and wanted her hair so badly, but I had curly wavy hair. I saw a video she made about 5yrs or so ago. She's heavily involved in CA propositions and UN work. She was fundraising for a trip to FL for a meeting!
I was 12-13 and in New Orleans growing up but KNEW California was where I wanted to be so badly! I finally made it to the West Coast & The Film Industry in '84! Things here used to be GREAT even in '84 onward but now? Not so much! LIFE has changed a LOT since we all were those innocent kids looking for So. Cal. FUN! We carry those memories still!~ Cheers!
That "place on the Sunset Strip" later became the scene of violent clashes between the police and young hippies. This show predates that by only a few years.
man i remember when they filmed this in Louisville Ky, for a week and at the end of the week they had a huge concert with everyone who had appeared that week as well as the regulars including the raiders
the four tops will always be my favorite. i'm 23 but you can see through the crap of today. it aint rocker science. the tops have many should've been released material that surpasses ths "HITS".
This is terrific! Would you know if there are full episodes to view anywhere? Looking especially for episodes featuring the Righteous Brothers. Thank you!
I love this song and show that used it. I would NOT want to live the life, or even being around someone who sees a negative comment over the tastes of someone else. If I like Classical music does NOT make me some despicable pedophile, only makes me someone with different taste. I love the Oldies of Rock-n-Roll when I was growing-up as a kid. I could never dance like they did on American Bandstand, but does not mean I can enjoy the show. These negative, foul-mouthed people could go-away never to be seen and heard of again and the rest of society would never miss them, not giving them a second thought.
that may be the one i have a LIVE showing on on 16mm with a room full of people. and if this is OK for this to be POSTED then I can post mine also IF I FIND IT I HAVE IT ON VIDEO RIGHT OFF THE SCREEN!!!
It's really sad how Detroit turned out. They even tore down Motown. I particularly think that they should not have torn down the beautiful buildings and houses.
NOTICE THEIR ARE NO BLACK KIDS DANCING, ON THE SHOW, IF THEY DID HAVE BLACK KID.S ON THE SHOW, IT WOULD NOT BE ON T.V. IN THE SOUTH. THIS WAS 1965. WOW BUT THEY PLAYED BLACK MUSIC
Raymond Miles All we had was AM radio and young people listened to the same music except there were a few rhythm and blues stations. When Soul train started in 1971 we watched that too and there weren't ANY white acts or kids there. I was watching some old R & B stuff on the Film Archive website and though the audience was seated on each side of the aisle everyone enjoyed the same entertainment.
There is another clip from "Where The Action Is" that was shot at Dick Clark's home and you clearly see a black lady in the front row sitting next to a white man. American Bandstand was integrated @ 1963.
So loved this show back in the summer of’ ‘65. So many memories and fun times fior a 15 year old.

+Larry Moore Wow ! What a great memory of a great time in music history .
What school campus
You got to see a lot of music legends, even though some of them probably lip-synced.
Great memory, thanks for sharing that!
I want to jump in it..tonight!...
wow...thought I'd never find this original version from the famous show that came on after Dark Shadows in the 60's! Love it....many memories.
Dark Shadows (Barnabas!!) and Where the Action Is! Could life get any better?! Miss those times. But now I watch Dark Shadows dvds, and WTAI on you tube! How fun!

I met Mark Lindsey of all places at my Dad’s gas station when he pulled in for gas in a red Ferrari. He was polite and I put gas in his Ferrari.
Four Top and Motown! That was REAL music!
When R&R was still FUN, and before the '60s dropped into the abyss of drugs and revolt after the "summer of love"!
I was only 5 years old, but my older sibs and I watched this show after they came home from high school. I remember the theme song after all these years. Had a crush on Mark Lindsay...
ALWAYS wanted to see a whole episode of this! Thanks!
4:30 every weekday on WABC. i watched it religiously and LOVED the Raiders. I have seen Mark Lindsay in concert and at 69, he is still the absoulute hottest man in the universe!!
Those of us blessed to grow up in the 60's can sure appreciate these memories.
Waaaay better than rap-crap.
love this love watching the raiders, the action kids steve alaimo and tommy boyce.
As a teenager I honestly don’t remember this show although I love these videos here on. I remember American Bandstand and Shebang with Casey Kasem as I was on his Christmas show in 66 as I remember.

Brings back memories of my incredible crush on Action Kid Leslie, the brunette with the shoulder length hair. What a beauty with great moves!
Loved this show when I was in Hiogh School, watched it every afternoon.

Of course there was Joy, Roberta and Jeni-Linn also, but Leslie was the best.
My favorite was Jerry Lynn Stapleton the brunette with a long black hair
Man, I wish our youngen's would see real music videos. I was blessed to have those memories. The AMA's did not have nothing on this..
Keith Allison singing The Stones' "Satisfaction" what a trip!
I love the Four Tops. Wish I was there. Too bad I didn't exist for another 4 years.
I was once at a place called Pickwick pool in Burbank. Dick Clark was filming WTAA and Paul Revere & the Raiders was on the show. Dick Clark saw us peeking over the fence & invited us in to participate in the show. Today, I have never seen that show.
Where The Action Is, it was a super 1960's music show!!
It certainly was. Facebook has a wonderful group called Fans Of The Action Kids- Where The Action Is. Most of the Action Kids are members of that group. Please feel free to join.

Used to love this show after school!
You are old man
Love the cute gogo girls dances. I must of been 8-9 yrs.old, like it was yesterday!

Thanks for the great memories.
I believe the Four Tops are performing on the patio behind the Roostertail nightclub on the Detroit River.
remember when singers didn't need fireworks, dancers and skanky costumes to cover up their inabality to actually sing????
TheBabyboomkidof53:
If you have any grandchildren, you can tell them the story of seeing those legends performing live at the Michigan State Fair.
I remember seeing this show on ABC in Los Angeles. The show would air in the afternoon. I would always wait to see Paul Revere and the Raiders sing their hit songs. I remember that this aired right after Dark Shadows.
@larrymoore......great story! What great memories to have...
This is terrific! Would you know if there are full episodes to view anywhere? Looking especially for episodes featuring the Righteous Brothers. Thank you!
Four Tops, Suits and hair cuts, we were trying to get away from that .
Us folks in Pittsburgh didn't have a friendly ABC affiliate to show WTAI. WTAE didn't clear a lot of ABC's daytime programming.
i jsut love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!. i was there ! well i was on a showe calledthe village squer
I love this song and show that used it. I would NOT want to live the life, or even being around someone who sees a negative comment over the tastes of someone else. Freddie Boom Boom Cannons last big hit. Thanks to Dick Clark.
This program would be after dark shadows a drama series
My uncle played the bartender 😀

It's really sad how Detroit turned out. They even tore down Motown. I particularly think that they should not have torn down the beautiful buildings and houses.
Gee I wonder why
They do still have the original "Hitsville" building, which is now the Motown Museum.

Bulllllloney..."the South?"..CALI IS STILL THE MOST SEGREGATED PLACE ON EARTH...FOLLOWED BY NY AND NJ
