  • Job interviews can be nerve-racking as many interviewees stress over how to best answer questions the employer throws at you.
But, not every company asks tough questions. One boss revealed the “coffee cup” test he uses in job interviews to determine whether an applicant is right for the role.
Former managing director for Xero Australia Trent Innes explained how he refuses to hire anyone if they fail to return an empty cup to the kitchen at the end of an interview.
“I will always take you for a walk down to one of our kitchens and somehow you always end up walking away with a drink,” Mr Innes said in a resurfaced 2019 interview with the podcast The Ventures.
“Then we take the drink back, have our interview, and one of the things I’m always looking for at the end of the interview is, does the person doing the interview want to take that empty cup back to the kitchen?"

Its interesting. I had a hands on machinist test with 25 other applicants. At the end i started sweeping the shavings and the interviewer says "dont worry about that, i got it".. i said "please, allow me to clean my own mess". I got the job.

Cause that has something to do with whether you can perform the duties and are reliable? Another CEO outsmarts themselves. As a business owner , I wouldn't rely on that method even a lil bit.

You set it up so that it can’t be refused. Have someone bring it in so that the boss and applicant have cups. At the end the boss gets up without his. See if the applicant offers to take it to the kitchen.

This is a bad test, because most people would be too distracted and focused on the interview and forget about the cup, unless they held onto the cup the whole time, if they put down the cup and didnt take a another drink its so easy to forget. A better test is to give them a candy/snack that has a plastic wrapper and see where will they throw the wrapper, if they just leave it laying around then its over, they either throw it in the trash or take it with them

@@weweweLit when you're cleaning up after someone else, what would you rather clean up, a wrapper or a cup?
Think about twenty people interviewing, what's harder to clean up 20 rappers or 20 cups. Now if you think about it, who's going to be cleaning afterwards. Now if a boss sees you washing your own cup they know that there's going to be clean cups in the room at all times if everyone was like you. But there's always someone to sweep. It's not always someone to wash all the dishes after each person. I don't know about you but in janitorial positions, they sweep and clean counters they don't wash dishes so who's going to clean up after the people that leave their cups. not the janitor if you leave your cup that means you expect someone to clean it afterwards. It means you act entitled and expect people to clean up after you. There will always be a janitor, be not always going to be a dishwasher. Don't leave your mess so someone has an extra workload when it's not even their job to clean dishes.
If you're at your mother's house, eat a bunch of food and then leave all the dishes for her? Is that ok?

I understand the process actually. Boss is looking for people who do things they shouldn’t have to be told to do. The employee would be more likely to be a great worker putting the companies needs first. Filters out lazy people and it suggests that person is not one track minded and can be accountable

At our place I refuse to have anyone do others dishes and cups unless it is there own. Only time is when we have big gatherings, but I also help with dishes if I can.

It is not Manipulative, it is an Observation of the Person's Character. Adults in Interviews should be Courteous, Cognizant and Respectful. If they are disrespectful, unfocussed, lazy and/or sloppy these are a clear indication of how they will be as an employee as it is who they are as a person and they are unable to mask it even when facing an Interviewer. I also watch for whether they Push their Chair back under a Table, do they hold a Handle while closing a Door/Cabinet/Refrigerator or just push and release it to slam shut, how they speak to others at the Company, what words they use and many other things as part of an Interview is observational, otherwise reading the Resume would be all that bis needed, but we all know most are filled with Fiction and Expansions of Truth and omit important Personal Traits. Things like Manners and Diligence can't be easily taught to an Adult.
