I've been watching pro football for almost sixty years. In that time I've seen Gale Sayers, the Juice, Walter, Tomlinson, and of course, Barry Sanders, all of them with immense skill at running with the ball. Most of them have exceeded Brown's totals. My opinion, which is really worth nothing in the scheme of things, is that Barry had the most skill. He was absolutely breathtaking. There are a couple of things that aren't pointed out about the latter guys, though. As good as they were, they weren't that much better than their peers. Jim Brown was. One account has it that fans of opposing teams would get to their feet just to watch him warm up for the coming game. How is that for recognition? Another important aspect of the game is FEAR. There have been a good number of defensive players that brought fear to the offense they were playing against-Doug Adkins, Deacon Jones, Dick Butkus, and of course Lawrence Taylor, to mention a few. There has been only one offensive player to bring fear to his opponents and that was Jim Brown. Closing with an amusing anecdote. The Green Bay great defensive end, Willie Davis, while being interviewed, stated something like this: all of the running backs that he saw, even the big and fast ones didn't like to get hit-they accepted it as just part of the game. When he first saw Jim Brown, his impression was "This guy looks like he wants to kick somebody's a$$." Jim Brown GOAT.

I'd believe Bobby Mitchell could run a 9.5, but I'd estimate Brown ran a 9.8 or 9.9, just based on watching his long runs. At least I never heard he was a 9.5 sprinter.
What was Jim Brown like playing against? Imagine 2012 Adrian Peterson. Imagine the Adrian Peterson who rushed for 6 yards per carry, and over a hundred yards per game. Now imagine that player doing it for 9 years. That is what Jim Brown did relative to his era.
Just my $0.2 cents. It's important to note, that the first 4 years of Browns career the NFL had a 12-game schedule. (1957-1960) The last 5 years of Browns career the NFL played a 14-game schedule. So, when people start comparing JB to other modern day backs it's important to remind them that Jim Brown didn't play 16 games a year over 9 years.

Furthermore, BROWN faced the same defenses 12 times in 1963(6 teams in his EASTERN CONF. × two games= 12)..The Cutback Runner in 1973 faced the same D's only 8 times(4 teams twice).. Defenses can always adjust better the second time, yet in all but the ST. LOUIS CARDS, and PHILLY EAGLES games in '63, did BROWN not improve on his first game rushing performance. In fact, he ran for over 200 yds against DALLAS in his second meeting with them. The Bruno Mali shoes spokesman in his first go-round vs. each AFC EASTERN division team in their first meetings in '73 went for 663 yds.÷4 teams =166 yds a gm.. in meeting two= 594 yds.÷4 teams= 149 yds per game. In '63, BROWN IN the first go-round went 707 yds in 6 gms= 118 yds per game..in meeting two JIM BROWN went for 990 yds÷6 gms= 165 yds per game..an improvement of 47 yds per game. In 1973 "you know who" went 17 yds less per game in meeting two= 166 vs. 149 yds per game in meeting two. No one does that nearly 50 yds per game improvement in meeting two vs every team met twice while breaking at least 130 yds per game on the season in a full schedule. Check every runner.. You will not find any who ever did that.. And, that includes DICKERSON AND PETERSON the only other 130 yds per game rushers. In fact, no 120-129 yds per game rushers have done that= SANDERS, DAVIS, LEWIS, HENRY.. No one..

Thurman Thomas Gale Sayers would be up on top if he had a longer career.

2012 Adrian Peterson. 1972 or so with OJ Simpson. 1998 Terrell Davis Could have rushed for 2,400 yd if he had wanted to. Of all of those, Adrian Peterson came close to Jim Brown's best season. In 2012 Adrian Peterson was averaging over 6 yards per carry, with the entire defense trying to kill him, and no quarterback taking the pressure off. He rushed for more yards than his quarterback threw for, and drug the Vikings into the playoffs where they had no business being.

Mr. Brown was a downhill runner. Yes, he broke a shit ton of tackles and deserves praise for that, but his team made lanes for him. His team opened up holes in the front seven, offering him the ability to shuck off smaller men in the secondary. Barry had defenders in the BACKFIELD by the time he touched the ball. Look, I'm not a lions or browns fanboy by any stretch. I call it like I see it. Brown was a bruiser. Sanders was a human joystick. From an athletic point of view, the shifty bastard running 80 yards just to gain 34 gets the nod from me.

It's important to note, that the first 4 years of Browns career the NFL had a 12-game schedule. (1957-1960) The last 5 years of Browns career the NFL played a 14-game schedule. So, when people start comparing JB to other modern day backs it's important to remind them that Jim Brown didn't play 16 games a year over 9 years.
Extremely important! That's why I go by "games played" instead of seasons. That's why OJs 2000 yard rushing season was the best. He did it in a 14 game schedule as opposed to everyone else's 16 game season

Furthermore, BROWN faced the same defenses 12 times in 1963(6 teams in his EASTERN CONF. × two games= 12)..The Cutback Runner in 1973 faced the same D's only 8 times(4 teams twice)..
Defenses can always adjust better the second time, yet in all but the ST. LOUIS CARDS, and PHILLY EAGLES games in '63, did BROWN not improve on his first game rushing performance. In fact, he ran for over 200 yds against DALLAS in his second meeting with them.
The Bruno Mali shoes spokesman in his first go-round vs. each AFC EASTERN division team in their first meetings in '73 went for 663 yds.÷4 teams =166 yds a gm.. in meeting two= 594 yds.÷4 teams= 149 yds per game.
In '63, BROWN IN the first go-round went 707 yds in 6 gms= 118 yds per game..in meeting two JIM BROWN went for 990 yds÷6 gms= 165 yds per game..an improvement of 47 yds per game.
In 1973 "you know who" went 17 yds less per game in meeting two= 166 vs. 149 yds per game in meeting two.
No one does that nearly 50 yds per game improvement in meeting two vs every team met twice while breaking at least 130 yds per game on the season in a full schedule.
Check every runner..
You will not find any who ever did that..
And, that includes DICKERSON AND PETERSON the only other 130 yds per game rushers.
In fact, no 120-129 yds per game rushers have done that= SANDERS, DAVIS, LEWIS, HENRY..

Jim Brown was more brain than braun much to the consternation of the sports enthusiasts of his era. He was a great leader on many fronts, which only a few really understood and deeply appreciated. He needs no introduction into the pantheon of all time greats. A hero of mine for sure!!!

Of all of those, Adrian Peterson came close to Jim Brown's best season. In 2012 Adrian Peterson was averaging over 6 yards per carry, with the entire defense trying to kill him, and no quarterback taking the pressure off. He rushed for more yards than his quarterback threw for, and drug the Vikings into the playoffs where they had no business being.

@White Oak Grove Church Barry did phenomenal with a mediocre line, AT BEST. Nearly all of his highlight runs are from broken plays. He literally did that shit by himself. Mr. Brown was a downhill runner. Yes, he broke a shit ton of tackles and deserves praise for that, but his team made lanes for him. His team opened up holes in the front seven, offering him the ability to shuck off smaller men in the secondary.

I am simply saying but he is not an important activist in that his name never came up in the crucial 60s and 70s except in that one case where he met with a bunch of other athletes to stand up with Muhammad Ali when he refused to serve in the army. But what brown said then was that he spoke with Ali and he was convinced that Ali was sincere in his principles but he didn't back Ali's decision. Brown was not involved in March is he was not involved in protest he did not stand with dr. King he did not talk about the Legacy slavery and sharecropping and Jim Crow and all the other terrible burdens and difficulties that we're facing country. He believes as so many NFL players believe that the owners and the bosses and the rich guys and the people in charge that they are right and that capitalism is right and that everyone has to just suck it up and not complain and go about his business. But what has brown done except carry the football? What would he have been if he had not been a football player? I am a inveterate sports fan but I am not so foolish as to believe that a great athlete extols virtues because real virtues are displayed in the real world and real courage it's not something that is easily translatable from a football field or a baseball field or a tennis court. That's a fantasy.
