When you are discussing these military tarps, please keep in mind that, depending on the intended theater of combat training will determine patterns, colors, and weights of the tarps, consider that the field of training was in Alaska’ frozen tundra, you wouldn’t opt to cary a thin nylon tarp with a green camouflage, you would go for a slightly heavier tarp with a different “winter” camouflage colors!
So in Ireland, the tarp would be camouflaged as a keg of whiskey or beer?😂😅😂👍😂

When buying an 'AUSCAM' Australian Army Hoochie (579grams) you need to watchful, there are copies on the market that are about 700grams lighter, and the base colour of the copy Hoochie is lighter. The quality of the genuine Hoochie, seams, tags, and reinforcements are stronger. I believe having two Hoochies press studded together is a better option. It enables the tarp to be set up with a floor, more head room and the opportunity of more configuration options. 'A point worth remembering': The genuine Hoochie press studs will not line up with the press studs on the copy if you want to join two together. So be sure to purchase two the same. You can purchase both the AUSCAM Hoochie and the copy new in Aus, at army disposal stores. A single Hoochie can be press studded and laced together to form a strong stretcher or Hammock, if needed. I come from a land down under 👍

@@RedBranchBushcraft They are between $60-70 dollars AUD. Another thing to look out for is the genuine Hoochies have Brass eyelets, the copies have copper press studs. I did a search around a 12 different military surplus stores most are out of stock right now, I suspect Summer and Christmas being the cause.

Thanks for a great review mate. The Australian Army issue hootchie has a mosquito net that's designed to tie into it, making it more useful in insect infested areas. The press studs (snaps) used to snap hootchies together (to create Taj Mahootchies) overlap, making the seam quite rainproof.
What if someone were able to combine the best features of both a hootchie & a BASHA?
Imagine, a hootchie with handles, tough enough to be used as a stretcher / hammock.
(Unfortunately, I think that snapping 2 BASHAs together might make the tarp too big)
    Keep up the good work!

I bought a tarp off a chinese site. It's super heavy duty. about 9'10" x 10'6" (300cm x 320cm) has webbing loops all the way around and some of them have grommets in the webbing loops. Very well sewn and the webbing loops are over stitched. The inside has a kind of a reflective coating. I about $25 CAD but it's been like 8 years since I bought it. I can't find the tarp anywhere now. I shoulda bought 5 of them, but it's holding up so likely wouldn't have needed them anyway. It's a very light tarp but seems to be strong.

It's always nice to see an unbiased side by side comparison of camping and survival gear. Great video mate.
I personally use the Aquaquest Defender 10 X 13 tarps. I have them both in their camo and in OD versions and they are built like tanks, but they aren't exactly budget, or light weight tarps. To be honest though, I think they're well the price, and for the durability, I'm willing to carry the extra weight. I know they aren't military tarps, but they sure are solid. I also like to hammock camp in all seasons so the 10 X 13 size is perfect for me to be able to close off both ends with a hammock inside for those cold windy nights.
Thanks for taking the time to shoot this video for us.

Had a desert DPM basha (British Army Standard Hotel Accomodation) for 9 years, still works a treat...as you say, they're bombproof.
My tip (unless you think you'll need the webbing handles) is to take a sharp knife and carefully cut the stitching attaching them to the basha and remove them. This makes the tarp a lot easier to fold/roll up more compactly and cuts the weight by 100g.
