  • An RPG game sequel to Ultima II. After Defeating Mondain and Minax peace was returned to the land of Sosaria. As time passes by, after the death of Mondain and Minax, it was soon revealed that they both had an offspring named Exodus. Now Exodus is out to get revenge to avenge the death of their parents by terrorizing the land of Sosaria. The stranger hero is now summoned once again by Lord British to protect and defend the land of Sosaria. The player also takes a quest to dungeons to receive magical marks, the quest to Ambrosia to find the Shrines to gain stats, and the dungeon to find the Time Lord which must be done in order to confront Exodus. Exodus cannot be killed directly (just like the previous games) by a group of party adventurers. You must use clues in defeating Exodus. This the last Ultima game to take place in the land of Sosaria. The Ambroisa and the Isle of Fire takes place in later Ultima games.
This is the first Ultima game to feature music. It's also the first ever RPG game where you play in the party rather than a single player, which influenced and inspired games like Dragon Warrior (or Dragon Quest) and Final Fantasy games. This game seems demonic mainly because of the satanic devils that was featured in this game just like Ultima II. The last Ultima game to take place in the Age of Darkness. Also reminds me of the Gauntlet games.
    The characters I've played are:
    Male Human Barbarain - Conan
    Female Elven Thief- Carmen Sandiego
    Male Human Ranger - Rocker
    Male Bobbit Druid - Healer
    Played on Applewin emulator 1.22.0.0
Note: This game is buggy. When I got closer to leveling up to 20, graphical bugs start to appear which made it impossible for me to progress further in the game. I had no choice to get to the last part of the level after I've gotten everything I needed to beat the game. Once that's done it's over. If I had not been able to beat the game, I would have simply gave up. Also, some parts of the video showing me repeatedly showing me doing the same thing over and over again have been sped up using Virtual Dub to keep the length of video as short as possible and some of them have been edited out. The video was originally about 20 hours long but CZcams keeps rejecting the video as being too long. You will see some parts being fast forward just like fast forward a Vhs tape on a VCR player.

Literally the first 5 minutes I played Ultima III I stumbled on the hidden city in the woods that only showed up when both moons were full. Luckiest I have ever been in any RPG game out of the gate.

Wow! Such great memories! My college roommate would play this on my Apple ][+. After a couple of weeks I noticed all these treasure chests that were unopened. They were all in an open field arranged like a 4-walled fort. There was one chest missing, instead it had a horse. My roommate called it the entrance.
I asked him, "What the heck are you doing? Why aren't you claiming all that gold in those chests?!" He said, "I'm setting up my zoo."
He searched for another horse and then one by one he would lead brigands, skeletons, manes, titans, zombies, ... you name it, toward this "zoo." He would only open the entrance by quickly mounting and dismounting the horse.
The key was having horses because they can outrun any enemy so he can quickly lead the enemies in the zoo to the other side and then run to the opposite side to open up the entrance.
One day, he said, "Come see my zoo animals." There they were. All the land enemies (plus a horse) surrounded by treasure chests!
A couple of weeks later, he showed me how to kill Lord British with a ship and cannon fire. LOL.

***Dont read if you dont want spoilers*** You can get into Exodus castle without passing the snake. When you teleport inside with the moongate, wait for a pirate ship to spawn, kill it, and sail it into the castle. You dont need the cards to finish the game, if you get to the Ultima computer the game assumes you already have the cards. You can create a party of 4, hand all the gold to player 1, save, delete the other 3, make 3 new ones repeat, and you can have unlimited gold and food. Then create your other 3 final characters. On level 4 of the dungeon to the south east of the castle there is a room with about 40 chests in it. 3 rooms on the floor are just strange wind, one is full of chests. Level 3 of the same dungeon has 4 rooms with about 6 chests in each.

Early Pirate Ship. Create your party and build to level 2. I use Paladin, Lark, Wiz, Cleric. Then save game at Inn in Castle. Build a Ranger with only points in Dex and Str. Venture out and kill level 1 monsters using repel and undead using ranger only. Have cleric get gold. Now get bow for lark and blowgun for ranger (no armor, don’t need it). Have only Ranger talk to Lord British to become level 5. Go in and out of castle till pirate ship arrives. Fire at distance. Use mage to cast missiles. Claim the ship. Go back into castle. Save game, remove ranger from party and add paladin back in. All characters are level 2, no large monsters, access to ship. You can easily buy multiple time stop, get gold pick, and mystic armor if you know where. You can farm these low level guys while exploring the entire map, basically free XP and GP. Build INT and WIS scores in Ambrosia, then do the Death Gultch Merchant gold grind and use compass hearts to flee. This can max out STR and DEX abilities.

In 1985 I owned this for the Atari 800XL. My father bought this at Computer Palace, an Atari dealer in Eugene, Oregon (long gone, of course) because he seen the poster to the game on the store window. He couldn't get into it, or understand it, because it was so far removed from the arcade shoot-em-ups he was used to (like the Space Invaders knockoff TI Invaders for the TI-99/4a which we also owned at the time). So I ended up being the sole player of the game because I knew what I was doing and I loved how different it was from the standard arcade style games I was used to. I seriously disliked the disk being saved whenever a character dies, so you couldn't reboot the game and start where you last pressed the Q (Quit and Save) button. At least that's how it worked on the Atari 8-bit system. Because of the graphics limitations of computers of the time, I used my imagination, which I did. It was this game (and Ultima IV, when that one became available on the Atari 8-bit) that got me interested in all things medieval for a couple of years.

This video had brought back so many wonderful memories of playing this as a kid. I had to get it on gog and play it again. Only issue I've encountered is foes seem very few and far between for me. Thanks so much for this video. I can't explain to you how awesome it is.

I owned this on the Commodore 64. Never knew the Apple IIe was equal. Such a difficult game, too. Modern RPG'ing owes so much to this.

    • @rbrtck
      @rbrtck Před 5 lety

+jupreindeer The Apple IIe was only "equal" if you added a costly Mockingboard sound card, and even then the C64's SID chip is superior, in my opinion. Graphically, the game originated on the Apple II, and the C64 conversion was done as a close one rather than taking full advantage of the C64's capabilities. Nevertheless, the C64 version makes use of more colors and has a clearer display (especially for text), which makes for a small but noticeable improvement. It wouldn't be until _Ultima V_ that some real effort was put into improving the C64 version over the Apple II original, with far more colorful tiles and some use of hardware sprites, but even in that case it was mostly a direct conversion.

Food cost money. The way to earn money is to kill enemies which later turns into treasure chest, steal chest from merchants, or get chests in dungeons. Then you have to keep going back to the store to buy food from the grocery clerk. Sometimes, I need to accomplish something first before I can go back to the store to buy food, or upgrade weapons.

If you take a look at 9:36:45. you will notice a graphical bug in the game. When I got close to leveling the players to level 20, that's where the bug starts. When I try to enter the towns to purchase needed items, it places me in the body of water instead of on land. That prevents me from moving and stuck like ice.

I always did Wizard, Wizard, Cleric, Thief. You gotta have a thief for chests and a cleric for healing. The wizards could knock out about an entire group of monsters in one cast and even the cleric do the same with its Zxkuqyb spell.

I've owned the Atari 8-bit version and even after entering Castle Death all players equipped with exotics it took much more than two hits to kill the monsters. On that version you had to be sure all players are at level 20 and your wizard and cleric having 99 magic points (so make sure your wizard is of the race to allow full 99 points of intelligence and likewise cleric with 99 points of wisdom). Not only did you need to use heal spells quite a bit but powerful spells that kill multiple random foes or the Necorp spell that allows you to kill the worst foes like dragons or balrons with only one hit).

Not bad for the grand daddy to Final Fantasy. RPG's were always suppose to be long. But, 5 hours in, these characters are taking some kind of holy bath. Nothing like an hour of SHAZAM! with...I'm guessing the sound of a microwave shorting out? The music really saves it.
