  • Despite being rarely done, the upper talullah is a wonderful run. It’s quite similar to an easier upper big creek, being mostly continuous class IV boogie with plenty of good boofs and slot moves, and one or two rapids of higher class V difficulty. We portaged twice for wood, both rapids would be runnable if they were clean. Otherwise, the creek was pretty clear of wood. The whole run is within feet of a small gravel road, allowing easy access for scouting and clearing of wood, as well as lapping, while not intruding on the wonderful scenery too much. The one issue with the run that I believe has kept people off of it is that many of the larger rapids have undercuts, although none are outstandingly heinous.
The level on this run was ~675 cfs which felt like a perfect medium, not too flushy and not to boney. The guidebook says the minimum is 300cfs and this sounds right to me based on today’s level. The gauge is USGS talullah near Clayton, and is no far downstream of the takeout, so should be a strong indicator.
Directions: driving west on hwy 76 from Clayton, turn right onto persimmon road. In ~5 miles turn left onto talullah river road. In about 2 miles you will cross a bridge over the talullah. Just upstream is the last major drop of rainbow falls, look for a place to drop a car either above or below it depending on wether the log is still in it or not. For the put in continue upstream two more bridges, making sure you Scout on your way up.
