For many clients, the effects of trauma can impact almost every relationship they have - from the casual ones to their most intimate.
So how can we address the relational side of trauma while also helping clients process traumatic events?
In this video, Terry gets into what it is and shares a case example to illustrate how we can work with it.

This resonates. So, trauma is not only the "abuse" but also the emotional neglect by those close to us. If family members are in tune with the affected person, they would notice if something was wrong and be available emotionally. Very important point. Thank you.
How beautiful. This touches me so much, because it is at the core of humanity, with so much potential for collective healing, and collective wellness. Its tremendously empowering to see this validated.
This hit me hard. I have always felt very ashamed that the most distressing aspect of a traumatic event that I experienced was being denied support after the traumatic event had happened.
I have felt that I "should" care more about the event itself, so I have only told my therapist about the event. But it feels like I'm breaking inside every time I'm reminded of how I was rejected and left alone by those who should have helped me.
This gives me the courage to maybe tell my therapist about what happened afterwards. This makes me feel less stupid... Thank you.
And if a person has had both catastrophic events AND complex, relational trauma....she is pretty much set for an incredibly difficult life.
I’ve had both, had an incredible difficult life, and have healed tremendously through South Pacific Private’s program in Sydney, Australia. It’s based on The Meadows in the US, based on the work by trauma author and nurse, Pia Melody. I wish I did this 30 years ago 🌝
@@melt2947 Is Pia Melody still around?? I heard about her back in the 1970's! Good for you for working through this!
@@jfdc8432 Thanks! I’m going to amend my above comment..I just realised it gives the wrong impression. The program is based on Pia Melody’s work..she doesn’t physically attend 🌝
I need a good therapist who understands this like you. I'm ready to heal and overcome the complex relational trauma I had in childhood. I was in foster care system. I can't find a therapist who understands the complex trauma of that AND who is trustworthy enough to work with. I have had trauma with so called therapist who would use information I shared against me and tell everyone.
Hi, I don't have any personal recommendations that I can give, but I can direct you to this database: www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists
Here, you’re able to search for therapists and support groups based on location, and filter through the results based on a variety of factors - specialties, approaches, and methods.
Alternatively, I would also recommend that you review some of our blogs or free materials and reach out to our community. Many times, both practitioners and patients will comment on our materials, which may help you with what you are looking for.
I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I do hope this is a step in the right direction and helpful in finding the resources you need.
