In 2013/14 Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers created a team that would come close to winning the Premier League. Luis Suarez was their star. When he was sold for over €80million to Barcelona Liverpool had a rebuilding job.
Who did they sign? How did they do? Where are they now? Written by Seb Stafford-Bloor, illustrated by Philippe Fenner.

Not adequately replacing Suarez who absolutely carried that side was more significant. Even had Liverpool won the league he was off to Barca based on his form that season. Ultimately most of these players absolutely flopped. Also as ridiculous as it sounds that Being Liverpool series damaged his reputation too as he became a figure of mockery for quite a while.

2016 was the year of Lallana. Instrumental in our Europa League run, England's POTY, and was at his peak from Aug to Dec when it looked like we had a real shot at winning the league. Sadly after that he was struck down by injuries and by the time he was fit again Ox, Keita and Fabinho had all been signed.

Spot on mate. I think him and Oxlade-Chamberlain are massive what-ifs. Neither of them really started well but both of them really found their stride, won over the supporters and made themselves a place in the first team, and then suffered a string of injuries that relegated them to the periphery. Lallana is one of the best team-players I've ever seen and the sport needs more like him - just less brittle.

Even though many of them weren't great, they will be fondly remembered. Rickie Lambert was never meant to be a starter at Liverpool, but brought a feel-good feeling towards the club. Adam Lallana was fantastic (when he wasn't injured), Klopp even tried (unsuccessfully) to re-train him as a 6 in his final months there, as he was no longer in contention for any of the attacking positions.
Many of them, like Moreno and Lovren, became crucial members of the dressing room. Even if they weren't being played regularly, their attitudes were always brilliant and supported the team with a lot of passion. As for Origi.. well, everyone knows what he's done for the club. 4 of the 8 became key pieces for the foundation of present-day Liverpool, and as a Liverpool fan, I can't thank them enough

    - Won Laliga with Atletico Madrid (far less talented team when compared to Barça or Real) at age 33 by scoring some very crucial goals for them

As much as it pains me from the bottom of my heart, Liverpool post-Suarez/Rodgers is an example of how to run a football club properly.
Appointed Klopp, had a proper football structure behind the scenes, bought player profiles to suit the philosophy of the club, and as a result, were winning the UCL within 4 years and the elusive PL in 5.

I would absolutely love Tifo to make a new "Finances of Liverpool" video because United just signed Antony for £85M and that has just taken their spending to £220M this summer. Liverpool nearly matched United for commercial revenue, but also played every single game of football possible to them, won 2 trophies and got to a UCL final along with finishing 4 positions above United and playing CL football.
Yet they are splashing the cash (again) and we are being told that theres no money (again). I am in equal measures confused, upset and very annoyed at the whole situation, as are most of the fanbase. Would love for you blokes to shed some light into the situation if possible.

As a Liverpool fan, the summer of 14/15 was quite weird, every Liverpool fan knew what they were gonna miss when we sold Suarez, but there was a hope that the new signings would eventually come good and maybe balance the team altogether like coutinho transfer would do in 17/18. And Brendan rogers’s inability to do so kind of finished his stint at Liverpool and told everyone it was mostly suarez’s brilliance that so nearly won Liverpool the title. We defensively actually did became better in 2014/15, but in attack we were so much worse now, balotelli only scored 1 or 2 league goal, sterling has had a good season, but he left for city thereafter, Lallana was still a bright spot, we lost to stock 6-1 in the farewell game for gerrard, you could see the potential in coutinho, the loss to arsenal at emirates was quite damning too, and the transfer of markovic or his failure at Liverpool had so much effect on us Liverpool fans that now a CZcams compilation isn’t enough to tell us about the player’s quality or his talent.

In hindsight, the summer of 2014 was the beginning of the end for Rodgers. We sold Suarez and initially wanted Alexis Sanchez to swap, but he preferred London and Arsenal. So we moved onto Loic Remy, but found out he had a knee issue that could be a problem. Then Sturridge gets injured so the board was forced to panic buy Balotelli, who BR had explicitly stated he did not want. Lambert and Borini were always meant to be backups. There was a mid season bump when BR stumbled on Sterling as a false nine of sorts, but there wasn't enough goal threat. It got so bad that in Stevie G's last ever game for us, he played CF.

Liverpool even knew at the time that Suarez couldn't be replaced. Given the rebuilding process that had to happen (seeing as our title challenge that previous year was almost solely down to the forwards (one being suarez who departed, the other sturridge who spent the rest of his time at anfield injured)) it made best sense to acquire young promising players rather than an outright superstar. Inevitably with this strategy there is a good amount of unpredictability in terms of hits and misses. Overall I think Liverpool recovered pretty well.

Great video, though…what’s missing about Lazar Markovic is his time at Benfica. His one exciting 2013/14 season at Benfica was the main reason why they signed him, yes he was good at Partizan but was even better at Benfica. Imagine a 19 year old immediately making an impact at a club like Benfica, those few that do so have a lot of potential (think Darwin Nunez, even he was older in his breakout season). David Luiz (who played for Chelsea at the time and played for Benfica previously) said it would be a mistake if Chelsea didn’t sign him. Markovic even got comparisons to a young Lionel Messi, probably because of his great dribbling and the long hair. And he was FAST, probably amongst the fastest 30 players in the world at his peak. Unfortunately, we never got to see him live up to his potential, and to say he didn’t have it would be wrong, he almost scored the goal of the season at Liverpool when he hit a flying half volley off the crossbar. A flash in the pan is how I would describe him, really exciting when on it, but that style was never consistent enough to make it at a club like Liverpool.

I remember the commentator stating on the debut, as Markec was to come in from the bench, that the young boy is faster than wind. Never really lived up to the hype. You mentioned that he is currently playing in Partizan, but, he's contract ended and the club didn't want to offer him a renewal, since he hasn't scored a single goal in the league besides being the club captain and playing on the wing... Now he signed for a Turkish Premier league club. His career was ruined by injuries and Rodgers played him as a wing back on those rare occasions when he had a chance to play, he was actually one of the best Benfica players, hence why Liverpool payed 25m € for him.

Suarez in 2014 was the best player in the world, but since it was during the peak of Messi-CR7 and CR7 won it all, no way Suarez would ever win. Only way to beat prime Messi-CR7 was by winning it all and making others look like amateurs, something Sneijder and Ribery were never able to do. Suarez did, but he had no accolades to support his Ballon d'Or case.

Lallana was the 'trigger' for Liverpool press under Klopp. The first to really take to it. Klopp adored him.
I always hated the Lovren signing tbf.
Moreno was great at Sevilla. I wanted him, Shaw or Sandro. Any one would have been fine. Great debut but yeah, that is about it for Liverpool.
Markovic got mugged by Rodgers at a crucial time in his career. It made little sense. If Rodgers didn't take to you, like Nuri Sahin too, he made sure everyone knew about it.
Not working on Sanchez much sooner cost Liverpool big time, at least for the Rodgers era.

I think Moreno gets a lot of stick he didn't necessarily deserve. I see a lot of the same criticism directed at Trent, but Trent's a set-piece taker and he's English, and he had done better in the bigger moments. Trent is absolutely the better player - I'm not saying Albie was ever at his level - but I think the two of them tend to be criticised for the same thing - caught upfield, exposed in certain 1v1 situations etc.
