Hi, I'm back from the dead. I've got big things planned for the future.
Edit: I didn't think I'd need to note this, but this is a gameplay mod for a what-if scenario. This does not aim to be fully consistent with lore, or to be an accurate model of a real-world scenario.
That said, while I am aware that the ASHPD is marketed as a "Quantum Tunneling Device", I'd also like to point out that "Quantum Tunneling" is explicitly noted to be a trademark of Aperture Science, and not explicitly noted to be a phenomena of quantum mechanics. That, combined with the fact wormholes explain portals a lot more comfortably than quantum tunneling, lead me to believe that the inner workings of the portal gun are better defined via wormholes.
welcome back!

Welcome back Mr. Runner. We have a lot of work to do
lets gooo welcome back
Hey welcome back from the ded how was it?
"These portals, if real, would create black holes if too much mass is unbalanced. To work around that, I broke the laws of physics by jumping across a large gap with a chair."
Makes sense to me.
"these portals, if real, would create black holes if too much mass is unbalanced. to work around that, i have to fly up to the chamber exit using just a cube and a camera"
exactly
@@jaydentt lmao

Actually, the ending technically WANTS you to make a black hole. so i would count that as a massive W
Best way to make the game beatable while still following the rules all the way up to that point. The portal gun gets damaged from the explosion, so it sparks a bit, allowing you to casually place a portal despite the built-in safety protocols... causing the game to crash shortly after you go to the moon because a blackhole was formed.
@@shibainu2528 I guess you could also just increase the tolerance, up to 40kg perhaps.
That's a cool alternate ending. You make a black hole and destroy the entire earth. RIP the half life universe
Eh?
Making a portal to the moon isn’t making a black hole.
It just sucks things in because of the difference in air pressure.
its the debris from wheatley being sent through causing mass inbalance@@drdca8263
only just noticed chell still weighs 85kg in the starting sequence, without the portal gun.
taking this not as an oversight but chell losing 5kg on her way to get the portal gun
Finally you finished this after having a whole stream consisting of failing a jump
4000 hours in portal 2 btw

Ironically, if you somehow you made an object fall infinitely through portals with no way to reach it yourself, you'd have no way to stop a black hole from forming, so much for that failsafe... an effective failsafe would be to make one portal un-enterable depending on the imbalance (or maybe having the portals push/pull objects towards them with increasing force could also be fun) but i guess it wouldn't be too interesting for a challenge
nuh uh, this is the aperture way of doing things - solving problems you don’t have with solutions that don’t work

I'm honestly impressed with whatever stasis tech Portal has, to ensure someone can sleep for years and wake up with a healthy body-mass of 85kg.
Chell beat the odds by managing to "pack on a few pounds"
190lbs is not normal for a woman. It is obese for almost all women unless they are like 6'8
@@Teh_Random_Canadian
You are objectively wrong. That's not true. BMI doesn't even have a "women's" and "men's" version, and unless she's short to an abnormal degree no 85 kilos isn't obese. Even being generous about the effect of the boots her model is easily >180 cm she's not a midget.
@@Graknorke look up BMI, she has to be 6'2 minimum to be considered on the high end of healthly
@@Teh_Random_Canadian
Overweight isn't the same as obese, and also she is in fact that tall. She's a decent bit taller than the model for the blue co-op robot, which is said to be 73 inches. 85 kilos is a perfectly believable weight for someone that height. BMI isn't a particularly deep system and there's lots of things that can throw it, for example people who are particularly fit often come in overweight because it assumes a more sedentary low muscle mass build.
HELL YEA, HE'S BACK!
Seriously I like these portal videos, portal modding is like minecraft modding, making the game completely replayable like the first time.
This challenge was pretty cool. It encourages taking 0 portal routes while still having another way to complete the level.
the game theorist video doesn't seem to be super accurate at all on the portal gun itself, so I'm glad we can just agree to chalk it up as an excuse to make an interesting challenge mod. That being said, cool video!
unfortunately there are some down here in the comments that desperately need it to make sense for the video to be watchable, but yes. it is just context for a video game challenge.
@@PortalRunner Because your context is based on nonsense and you're in the comments for some reason trying to defend that nonsense. Anyone who knows the first thing about science or about the game would know its a Quantum tunnelling device, not a wormhole generator. You just took game theory's unscientific video at face value when its full of lies and misinformation.
@@NIgHTMaReFortyTwouh, calling it a “quantum tunneling device” isn’t something that actually makes sense. I know the game calls it that. But if we are critiquing something for physical accuracy, “it uses quantum tunneling, not wormholes” makes little sense. Because, as the video author noted, quantum tunneling is a wholly unrelated idea (and, indeed, as he said, is about how probability amplitude can kinda seem to leak through barriers in the potential energy function, resulting in a chance of ending up on the other side of the barrier when classically it could not have.
That’s not to say that the “Game Theory” video is right about any of the stuff (I rather dislike the “Game Theory” channel, for, among other things, causing people to assume that the subreddit for the mathematical field of game theory, is about his youtube channel, and posting inane things to it. Also it just gets stuff wrong all the time.)
But, “it isn’t wormholes, it is quantum tunnels” is a terrible criticism.
Wormholes are the only thing that would make sense?
Well, heck, the semantics of “portal” and “wormhole” are nearly the same. They link locations in space that would otherwise be far apart.
@@drdca8263 “portal” (to me, at least) more refers to interdimensional traveling, such as the nether portal from Minecraft. I think of it like the terms “square” and “rectangle”. A square is always a rectangle, but a rectangle is not always a square. Same goes for portals and wormholes. Wormholes are always portals, but portals are not always wormholes.
BRO I WAS LIKE JUST WATCHING YIUR OLD VIDEOS AGAIN AND WAS LIKE "yeah this guy quit" OMG
Nice to see about 3 streams go by in about 1 minute and 45 seconds
that transition at 11:28 tho
holy shit i didnt evens ee that thats so good
"Don'w worry though...It get's worse" Damn...That's cool
Would the total mass displacement From the portals added up from across both games be enough mass to cause a black hole based on the size of the portals?
Well, if someone could make a version of this mod for portal 1, but also make both mods not revoke the portal device, we could find out. Though, due to the lack of objects with masses equivalent to that of planets passing through the portals, most likely not.
Oh damn, I just started watching you again recently for nostalgia, this video is a nice surprise
Just wanted to let you know that I love this thumbnail, looks good

Dude you will not believe how much I’ve missed you! I’ve been checking your channel praying you come back, thank you so much!
i love how you mod the game to be quantum mechanically accurate and then abuse glitches to advance
You do know that there's a minature black hole in the portal gun to make the portals? Feel like you should be more worried about the black hole ur holding 😂
It doesn't make the portals, its the power source for the device. Thats why the blueprints for the device include a 'black hole cooling fan'
@NIgHTMaReFortyTwo oh. well my point still stands. You're still holding a minature black hole 😅
@@NIgHTMaReFortyTwo My understanding is that it "blows out" a sliver of ring singularity from the black hole, and that's what makes the portals. As for how it pairs two ringularities, unpairs and destroys a specific old one, making matter come out of a black hole in the first place, keeping the black hole in a set position relative to the gun, moves said black hole and gun through those wormholes, yadda yadda... _science isn't about why, it's about why not!_
The black hole itself does not create the portals, it does, however, generate the energy used to create them.
he: "...the fun value..."
me: undertale
22:44
Well, _technically_ since they are made of liquid asbestos they should add weight to the portal.
This safety feature is so overboard. I love it
I remember the stream when you coded the droppable portal gun. It was fun!
Whilst this idea is very cool, the fun police has arrived :(
Portals are wormholes, so basically one thing goes in, one thing goes out but in another place. With Quantum Tunneling you would need to balance the mass/energy intake, but because wormholes are one object (since both portals are tethered) they do not need to balance anything. But that creates another problem...
*PORTALS* *ARE* *DOUBLE-SIDED*
Which means, in short that you can enter a blue portal and reenter through the orange one, you can do the same action backwards. this scenario requires that one portal should be only enterable and a second one not enterable + gravitational effects of both (which depending on how much mass enters the wormhole might be even bigger)
We will ignore that with string theory magic.
Now an interesting fact is that portals emit hawking radiation in form of visible light because we can differentiate between blue and orange portal through the glowing perimeter, so they could disappear in like, 10^50 years or idk. Better be quick
(Also im going to ignore that portals are 2 dimensional instead of 3 dimensional like blackholes but i dont want to do math for a portal 2 mod video)
can't believe it, they managed to release a video!?
anyway, good job on doing the thingy!
This video has shown me so many new very cool tricks thanks for making
11:57 the cut here was so clean I had to watch it multiple times
oh god i didnt even notice that..
I love how the premise of this gimmick is "lets make portals more realistic" and then in practice its like "im gonna glitch out the game so we can beat it"
Yo this music is sick the person who made these beats must be awesome awesome :3
blackhole in the portal gun is just for cooling, portals are quantium tunneling in reaaaaaly big scale
this is an AWESOME video, thank you!
In layman's terms, speedy thing goes in, speedy thing must eventually go back out.
YES ANOTHER PORTALRUNNER VIDEO LETS GO
Love it, very creative. Light does not have mass (precisely zero) but it does have energy in the form of momentum which would also have to be conserved. Having said that, asking you to deal with conservation of momentum along with energy is a bit much lol. You'd also have to conserve charge (no biggie) and angular momentum (dear god)
Dude you're a legend

Cool video after a year of waiting
YEEEES YOURE FINALLY BACK
after one whole year, he is finally back
I have an idea: instead of the mass imbalance leading towards a black hole, it would instead lead to something I will call "quantum breakdown", where a wide radius (1 km) around the portal gun experiences "quantum static" and becomes too unstable to connect portals. The mass imbalance will decay over time, but slowly (like roughly 1% of current imbalance per second). The imbalance threshold (the point quantum breakdown occurs) would be say 1000 kg, and the imbalance hysteresis (the point where quantum breakdown stops) would be 100 kg.
This leads to a very interesting dynamic:
To ensure you can continue going through portals, you need to make sure you never exceed 1000 kg of mass imbalance in one direction.
If you reach quantum breakdown, the portals will collapse (the portal surface will remain) and it will take almost 4 minutes for the quantum field to stabilize. More or less depending on how much you exceed the 1000 kg limit.
During quantum breakdown, you can still place portals, but they will not connect.
Once the imbalance reaches 100 kg, the quantum field stabilizes, allowing the portals to connect once more.
Things like plasma balls, tractor beams and light bridges can be considered "massless", meaning they never modify the current imbalance.
In two-player modes, each pair of portals can have their own mass imbalance system, but the quantum breakdown is applied globally, meaning the two players now also have to communicate their current imbalance level. If one player causes quantum breakdown, both players' portals collapse.
This may also allow for an interesting 4-player mode, once again where each player has their own mass imbalance system and globally applied quantum breakdown that collapses all 4 players' portals.
Obviously, the imbalance threshold and hysteresis points (as well as the imbalance decay rate) can be adjusted to make the game more or less difficult.
What sort of spontaneous nonsense is being used by game theory to say 'the portals get gravity when things go through'
the king has returned
the return of the king
Friendly reminder that portals have absolutely no link whatsoever with wormholes and are formed by quantum tunneling. It is a portable quantum tunneling device after all.
But great video either way
i was waiting... for days... weeks... years... it was so long that i dont even know how old i am anymore...
this is portal content of all time
I think 10kgs being the limit is the biggest difficulty because if it could be more you could move the portals back and forth like what you did with the blobs, but you could use anything.
He never misses, the absolute legend!
but i missed your vids :)

shooting a new portal resets the mass of the portal
I'm not sure if it's the same as a generic wormhole, but Portals are actually quantum tunnels.
Edit: I looked this up, and It turns out Wormholes and quantum tunnels are seperate, so the balance thing doesn't apply. A little lore bit, Black Mesa was working with entanglement and wormholes, but Aperture was working on quantum tunneling.
i'm not a physicist, but my understanding of quantum tunneling has me believe that it's really got nothing to do with teleportation of matter in the way portals do it. rather, it describes a phenomena where a particle passes an energy barrier that it statistically shouldn't be able to. not teleportation.
i'd argue the lore is applying the idea that taking fresh fields of science vaguely related to the subject matter and aging them via sci-fi story telling leads to plausible explanations for otherwise purely fictional mechanics. quantum tunneling sounds fancy enough to equate to portals.
You're wrong. They absolutely are quantum tunnels. The guy you're replying to is right.

@@PortalRunner
My intuition is that the way physics would actually work, is portals lose the energy equivalent to what is getting thru them (including factors like relativistic mass etc), and in any circumstances where the total energy in the universe would've been changed by something going thru portals (different altitudes, atmospheric pressures, orientations relative to gravity etc) that difference always gets subtracted as well (they always lose energy, either by directly creating energy, or using their energy to cancel out pre-existing energy), and after enough charge is used up they would fizzle out; the firey edges of the portals is the energy being "burned" due to things like air currents, light passing thru etc. And the energy to create the portals in the first place comes from the microblackhole inside the portal gun that is mentioned in one of the lines in the game IIRC.
Though, I'm not sure how fun the game would be if portals had a very limited charge, and if they had lots of charge then it wouldn't be any difference from the vanilla game...

A much more effective failsafe would be to deactivate the portals when the imbalance gets too high. The current failsafe of disabling the portal gun makes it impossible to prevent a critical mass singularity from forming.
Meanwhile the miniature black hole inside the portal gun:
Suggestion for a new mod/challenge: Portal 2 but it’s Metroid Prime… how do you do this? Well, there was recently a really impressive GMOD SWEP released on the steam workshop that recreates the entirety of Metroid Prime’s movement system inside of the source engine. All you would need to do is put a few upgrades around the many maps in portal 2 and you’d have yourself an interesting challenge.

Fun fact:
These "safety" measures actualy make it more dangerus
If you make a loop and put a cube in it you cant stop it by changing portals becouse of the massife offset
So if you threw it in an unreachable location congragulations you doomed the eart
