"Thanks for always being near the top of the mountain when I needed you" : Elvis to his Daddy in 1976 ; the way Elvis introduced his Daddy during his last recorded concert is also the perfect way to confirm how important Vernon was in Elvis' eyes. How could anyone criticize someone whom Elvis loved so much and who was by his side his whole life through.

Vernon Presley was a "come day, go day" kind of guy. He was never a go getter, but he did work. He spent over a year in prison when Elvis was a little boy for writing a bad check for about $5. Vernon did it because he thought his boss cheated him. If you notice in pictures, Vernon was always in the background and silent. Gladys was the force in the family. She was a pleasant woman who enjoyed people. She did have a temper, but when she was more like the head of the household rather than Vernon. Gladys and Elvis had a strong bond. He, like Gladys, was personable and generous. Vernon always worried about money. Vernon once said he never saw a guitar player worth a damn. Elvis resented his father marrying again so soon after his mother's passing. This is why Elvis bought Vernon a house by Graceland because he didn't want Vernon's nee wife sleeping in his mom's bedroom, which is totally understandable. The worst thing about Vernon is, he never stepped in as a father to help Elvis with addiction to pills. He knew what was happening and did NOTHING. That's what I think of Vernon.

Yes to all you e said, however Vernon was a weak man that could never support them. He is why She worried with Elvis over functioning to provide.
She not only worried she’d lose him in the army, but beside that, non of them knew if it was the end of Elvis career. Can you image if it was, how she felt having to depend on Vernin again. Not that her focus was money, but Vernons actions had put her through so much misery. After prison, and he started working he got fired for selling moon shine out of his work truck. They moved to Memphis not long after that. His reputation in Tupelo was complet Ruined then.

A very sad topic. It's no wonder Elvis felt so alone deep inside. There seemed to be noone in his life who he was able to open up to after Gladys, and was capable to support him, guide him, and whom he respected an trusted. We have many reasons to cry and mourn over him and his life. But what a legacy he still was able to leave us!

About Vernon I keep in mind the poem Elvis gave to his father and the epitaph chosen by Vernon for Elvis grave. Vernon carefully kept Graceland the way it was after Elvis' death, was touring with Elvis, went to Germany with him and worried about his son's generosity and the way some people could take advantage of him. He was mainly the Daddy who said to the young unkown Elvis that he would help him to follow his dream.

I had to leave the live chat early, unfortunately, but let me weigh in on why Vernon was so important to the whole Elvis story.
I’ll bypass the given which is that the father has a huge impact on a child’s development. We all know that. Vernon was allergic to work. Gladys did the heavy lifting on the money earning. When Vernon was sent to jail for forging a check, Elvis was only around three years old. This is a crucial age for a child when he normally would be going through a developmental stage called separation/individuation from his mother , meaning he learns he and mama are not one person. (Babies until this age believe just the opposite). When Vernon went to prison, Elvis missed this stage and he became more fused with Gladys. As time went on and Elvis got older, even after Vernon got out of prison, it became clear that Elvis and Gladys were the defining couple of the household. Vernon was basically the unruly child. He also cheated repeated on Gladys and was physically abusive. Elvis became his mother’s protector. This created, and I believe, was the HUGE force behind Elvis’s tremendous drive to succeed - - he had to compensate for his father’s less than stellar role as husband and breadwinner. He was driven to make sure Gladys got everything she deserved that Vernon never gave her. The downside of this, however, the over-bonding with Gladys, was also a big factor in why Elvis could not sustain a monogamous, longterm relationship with a woman. I also think Vernon failed to give Elvis any real fathering when he was going through his drug and health and career struggles. (As Jackie Kahane once said, Vernon was not a rocket scientist. ) So Vernon,IMHO, changed pretty much the entire trajectory of his son’s life. These are a few of the many reasons Vernon is so crucial to the Elvis story.

Elvis knew Vernon had never worked and never would. He used to tell people “daddy’s had a backache for thirty years.” Also, Vernon was caught bootlegging whiskey in Tupelo by the sheriff who had arrested him for forgery. The sheriff told Vernon he was tired of dealing with him and if he knew what was good for him he’d pack his belongings and leave Tupelo. They did leave Tupelo…that night! Elvis had lots of reason to not respect Vernon. He did beat Gladys, he cheated on her, and caused them to have to leave town in the middle of the night with basically nothing but their clothes. Elvis had such a big heart he eventually forgave Vernon obviously. Family meant everything to Elvis. I’m talking “blood relatives.” I believe if Elvis had lived longer he’d have even forgiven Red and the other two for writing the book. He did forgive Jerry Schilling for having an affair with Prissy while they were still married. A year after the affair Jerry was back at Graceland. Elvis just loved people…period. His generosity was unmatched even to this day.

i am struck by what some of his original Mafia guys said in an interview. That Elvis did try to call his mother every day sometimes more than once when on the Road. I don't think any of us have the whole Vernon, Gladys, and Elvis story. It has been hidden for years. Read the books by Gary Lindberg: Letters from Elvis, and The Roots of Elvis. Who knows what happened almost 90 years ago. Parker covered up so much over the years. And, probably blackmailed the whole family during the career of Elvis. That is why Elvis had to obey Parker.

Parker did not handle any financial affairs of Presley. Vernon wasn’t the right man. And the colonel had Vernon wrapped around his little finger. And Gladys never trusted the Colonel at all, that was also a huge worry on her. Elvis was too young to sign when the colonel moved in.
Vernon was uneducated and never able to support them. He is the one who worried Gladys unmercifully by forging a check, going to prison. She lost her home, was homeless, dependent on relatives with a toddler and no means of support. Then once Vernon was out of prison and got a job, he got fired for another bone head idea; “selling moon shine out of the back of his work truck”. They moved to Memphis not long after as Vernon’s reputation was completely ruined after that in Tupelo. Prison for forgery and then selling illegal moon shine out of his work truck after prison time ??? She worried as Elvis “in her mine was over working for them all”. He was determined to provide for his mother. And she knew it. once Elvis was drafted she worried for his safety. And think about it; none of them knew if his career would be over. Gladys wasn’t focused on the money by all means, but can you put yourself in her place, if his career was over they’d be dependent on Vernon again. Elvis said in one interview after his mom was gone, his dad was worried he have to do stup labor again digging ditches. And that bill the colonel produced was not real. It was just more extortion. He was trying to cover his gambling depths. But Vernon was easily scared by lies, manipulated and scammed.
I’m certain Elvis knew this. And if his health had held out I believe he’d have been able to get rid of the colonel. But the guilt his dad heaped on him even larger this time did hurt him deeply. I’ve been there as the provider with a dead beat husband, who would not ever step up even as my health was failing due to over functioning out the “you know what” for everyone. No drugs involved, my body gave out working in the fast lane as the only provider, after 24 years operating in corporate America on high adrenaline mode, “was not drug induced”, result of being necessary in the job and as no one else would lift a finger. I was 42 years old and had functioned in the fast land 24 years none stop. Corporate demands are unending, and they own you. You can’t even take the time to take your vacation in the American environment. Elvis had been asking about taking time to go somewhere even like a monastery for spiritual renewal. Many now embrace the reformation. Elvis kept saying his mom had something special from church. He was desperate to seek spiritual renewal. But the ones who lived with him, saw they’d loose so they called in Parker, who KNEW he’d loose. Elvis was only a commodity to them. All about a meal ticket, every one of them. When you’ve enable ones for years they do not have any compassion for you. They only turn to blame as they lose out.
Elvis was wrong for enabling them all. But he was in the fast lane and it’s hard to see and change directions unless you stop. They would let him stop. And done of these dudes like Red smithed yo
Manipulating his meds. Drawing some out of the capsule saying to help him. But if it didn’t put him to sleep he’d have to take more. Then his dependence only increases. And threat of accidental overdose.
If his mom had lived I believe we’d seen a much difference Picture.
Elvis could not continue to hold them all up. The colonel and Vegas pushed for three shows a night because Parker needed to keep up with his growing gambling debt.
I saw that Vernon was very weak and always heaped a guilt trip on Elvis after Gladys was gone. He did like wise when he remarried. He blamed Elvis for worrying his mom to death so he had to remarry. Never once acknowledging he himself worried her to death by not providing and making one bone head decision after another & getting into trouble for them. And he as he blamed he never showed real gratitude for Elvis providing. Not only providing but way over the top.

If that is true, plus other things may have been said or done to make Vernon wish to disconnect from Billy. I wasn't there, so I cannot say. I feel like Vernon thought more of Parker's opinion instead of Elvis' opinion. Elvis should have been encouraged to invest money in top stocks. He could have toured the world, as he so wanted, sat back and retired for life. He wanted to travel and be a serious actor. He was held back. we all know billy smith has a big chip on his shoulder about Vernon so anything he says I would take with a large pinch of salt, also we know billy is a liar, dont forget it was billy who started the rumour that Elvis did not die and billy was very proud of what he called his joke, when Elvis first died billy accused Vernon of ripping pages out of Elvis's will cause billy was sure Elvis would have left him thousands, when someone told him ripping pages out of a will was impossible then he said that there was another will which Vernon must of destroyed, this just shows not only how greedy billy smith is but how he resented Vernon, billy was alos fired from Graceland because a visitor recorded him being racist, so why anyone would believe a word billy say about Vernon when he clearly has an axe to grind is beyond me, and yes Elvis being drafted did hasten Gladys death, but it was more the fact that parker got it deferred for months so Elvis could finish King Creole, giving Gladyd extra time to hit the bottle and wreck her liver, which I am sure Vernon knew so he would blame that situation, not Elvis, Vernon lived for Elvis they were as close as any father and son could be, Elvis knew he could trust his father, I think billy was jealous, billy also complains in the MMs book that heleft the railraod to work for Elvis and lost his pension and Elvis didnt pay him enough, this is after according to billy, after not seeing Elvis for two years Elvis phoned billy and begged him to come and work for him, Elvis bought a doublewidth mobile home for billy and his family to live in, so billy had not out goings to pay for Elvis paid for everything yet he is still bitter that Elvis didnt pay him enough, and he lost his railroad pension to go work for Elvis who then a couple of years later died, like Elvis died on purpose just to spite billy, before believing anything billy says you have to take all of this into consideration.
