      Definitely need a part 2! Could be a series of your comfortable with that. Tools that help you in your day to day, how you're navigating the self acceptance journey, how to deal with people who don't understand ADHD, etc.

      Would love for you to touch on how to support a partner with ADHD. For example, when having a low phase or overwhelming thoughts. Also, supporting time management other than shouting “hurry the f*ck up, we’re going to be late!” 😂 thank you for sharing this, I can’t tell you how helpful it is for those of us that want to understand more about ADHD. ❀ you’re a legend x

    This made me sob the whole hour because i think Im neurodivergent but at the same time feel like a fraud and don't want to start the diagnosis process if it turns out I'm not and put all this work on doctors for nothing. But you articulated everything so well and we have so much in common ❀

      Hey I hope you saw a dr about it. It’s super common for us to gaslight ourselves but honestly I you relate to Helen, it’s for a reason. I had to force myself to stop gaslighting myself anbout it after seeing just how different I am on meds.

    When you have ADHD, you need a “What I did” list instead of a to-do list 😂 If you’re struggling, the dopamine of adding literally anything productive to it and immediately ticking it off is useful.
    I’ve had a similar journey. I write a “Things I could do” list within the categories of my business / life but am at peace with the fact I will “procrastinate” on those things and go off and do something completely different. As a creative the fun part is in the morning you have no idea what you will have created by the evening and that excites me to get out of bed at the moment!

    I think we're roughly the same age and I was diagnosed with ADHD last year too. It's so strange how differently it presents in different people. I'm not at all an outgoing person. I'm not sociable, loud or excitable but my brain is the same as what you've described. It never stops. I wake up as if I shouldn't have been asleep in the first place. It's already running before I've opened my eyes. It's such a horrible way to wake up.
    So much of what you've said is the same for me. It's really comforting to hear someone expressing things I used to think were just me.

    My partner of 13 years broke up with me really suddenly a month ago (we were engaged) and i think among other things, its largely to do with his ADHD. He said he had no time and headspace for a relationship anymore because he had all of these goals he wanted to achieve in his worklife as he has a really creative job. We were planning our wedding and he never fully felt committed to it. Its really sad that he felt he couldn’t have two strands of things happening at the same time in his life. He has recently had a diagnosis but isnt on any medication. It was interesting when you’re saying about all the things in your brain because if i was to ask him to do something he couldn’t have another thing on his plate because his head is always so full of ideas. We had issues on and off of him not doing things/thinking of me/not managing his time etc. i have a psychology background and knew it was always ADHD. Its so sad because we both really love eachother but on reflection he couldn’t ever meet me on the same level of prioritisation of our relationship. Its a really complex and was a long situation with so many good points but i feel if he could’ve got his ADHD under control it may have helped us.

      Good luck. I'm trying to pluck up the courage to go to the Dr and speak to them about my mental health as I've been suffering since I was 19 , now 43 and since after losing my dad last year all the ADHD symptoms have come to a head and I'm really struggling with life in general. I've done so much reading up about symptoms etc and I'm 99% sure I have ADHD , especially with the way I was when I was a child. Hope everything goes well for you xx

    i struggle so hard with time within my relationships. I don't realize just how much time has passed. I'll get a call from my dad being like "it's been two months" and to me it feels like it was just last week since we talked and then I feel terrible about basically forgetting my family and friends exists.

    Everything you have spoken about is so relatable! ❀I was diagnosed around the same time as you last year (at 27), and so many puzzle pieces about past and current mental health issues have fallen into place in the last year. I also initially held off on starting meds because of being fearful and feeling like I should be fine without them. But I'm so glad I tried them, they have (alongside psycho-education sessions about ADHD) really changed my life for the better. It's so great to be able to have a clearer mind and get things done so much more efficient and feel less stressed about stuff in general. I also struggled a lot with feeling extremely low and incapable of doing anything during the time in my cycle where I would experience PMS and therefore take a slightly higher dosage around that time in my cycle, which has really helped me. I'm glad to hear you're also on the right track to acceptance and re-shaping your life to fit your ADHD brain 🧠 Wish you all the best ✚❀

    Oh my god, the stuck feeling! It felt like a grieving process - I felt like all the parts I've been trying to hide, the overwhelm, the distraction, the fixations, procrastination - all of it. All the self destructive parts were suddenly exposed to the world.
    I'm still waiting to be seen via NHS, can't pay privately, but theres things I'm doing holistically. The exercise, eating less processed foods, keeping a diary for a schedule but another diary to process thoughts. I also take supplements - cod liver oil and evening primrose but ofc - check with your Dr if this is ok to take.

    I also got an ADHD diagnosis a year ago! I'm also diagnosed as type 2 but I have mostly internalised symptoms like type 3. It made me understand myself better, what works for me and why experience things that way I do. I mostly struggle with the emotional regulation and finishing anything in one go or at all.

    Helen, I have just watched this blog and it made me realise I have adhd as I feel absolutely everything you described but have always felt that normal and how everybody feels . My daughter is 23 and recently diagnosed with adhd, the way she tells me she feels is how I feel but have never ackowledged I have a condition. It all makes sense to me and I have you to thank. I will get my family to watch your video so they understand me better. I just feel a bit ‘wow’! And a bit of relief.

    This is one of my favorite videos you've ever made. A LOT of what you've said here about your experience with ADHD resonates with me too. I was diagnosed at 14 due to failing math in school, I'm 30 now. There wasn't as much research out then as there is now and I've found medication with therapy to be the most helpful for myself.
    There's not a lot of talk about ADHD online in a positive light (especially for girls/women) so I genuinely appreciate you being so honest and open about your experiences and how you're making life easier for yourself now with better tools you have available. It's not easy. ❀❀❀

    I only recently found out I have ADHD (I'm 29) and it's intense. It also explains everything I've ever struggled with. I have an IQ of 120, ADHD and agoraphobia, and it's really not a good combo. Thank you for your in depth testimony. It resonates with me and I feel seen. I struggle with the same things and it's hard for me to accept that there's nothing much I can do to change these feelings - they're just there and need regulating and need to be allowed to exist. Acceptance is hard.

    I have ADHD and I can definitely relate. I have found just enough of caffeine is good but too much makes my ADHD worse. If I have too much I’m all over the place then I crash. I have 2 cups of coffee in the morning. 1 regular and the next half regular half decaf and it seems to be the sweet spot for me. Thank you for sharing this. I’m sure it will help a lot of people. ❀

    Helen, I absolutely LOVED this video because I related to everything you said. It was like you were describing me instead of yourself, but in a much better way than I ever could. You’ve worded things so well. I’ve been diagnosed years ago but people think I don’t have it because I don’t display hyperactivity and I suppress a lot of the symptoms, but I was diagnosed with ADHD over ADD because I do show signs of hyperactivity in terms of fidgeting, overexcitement etc. I’ve even started to doubt it myself if I was misdiagnosed, but as I said, you are describing me. Thank you for being so vulnerable and real.
    I’m happy to hear you’re coping better and have more acceptance towards yourself. (Btw as I’m typing this I’m shaking my leg like crazy haha).

I had a very hard time socially because of being aware of people judging me and having a hard time handling my energy ... And still at 40 I struggle a lot with that.     My partner was diagnosed about 1.5 years ago and a lot of what you’ve shared resonates with me as far as what he shared with me and what I see from him. Having regular relationship check ins has really helped us out! Unfortunately we have an ADHD med shortage in the US so he’s been without for about 3 months or so. It was so rough for him, I felt awful for him :(

    This video is waaay too relatable. Now being in my 30’s, I understand myself a lot more. I like to go for walks with music in my ear when I feel overwhelmed. I’m the same with appointments too. I can also only have 1 coffee a day otherwise it gets too bad

    I believe I have ADHD and really want to get a diagnosis. Sadly for me, it is currently unviable due to the costs being so expensive. Videos like this are so helpful, whilst I would love to get a diagnosis, this really helps me understand ADHD so much more. If I was to get a diagnosis I don't think medication would be the route I want to take, but a diagnosis would help me if I was to look into therapy again. The multiple tabs really resonated with me, ADHD is a struggle at work but I have found ways to mask and hide it. I am always late and have been called lazy in the past and I never thought it could be something more. I wish I learnt about ADHD much earlier in my life as I now see how much it may have impacted my life, without me knowing. I think I have had to learn ways to live with ADHD without even knowing I have it. Moving on from relationships was something I never even thought about until you said it. This video was incredibly helpful and really solidified some of the feelings I have been having recently, and the impact it's been having on my work and home life as well as my emotional state. Pretty much everything resonated with me❀

    I was also diagnosed myself, however it seems to be impossible here in Northern Ireland to get Shared Care with the NHS if you were seen privately due to such a large increase in diagnosis lately 😔 everything you describe here I completely relate with. I've love more content on this and how you manage without medication as it's not something I'm able to get at the moment until I find a practice willing to work in a shared care agreement.

    The feeling rejected part sounds just like me, I have BPD. Im not saying u have but the way u explained that is exactly like me. I feel like I’m not good enough all the time. I was misdiagnosed with Bipolar. I feel so weird because my brain doesn’t work like others. I fall into deep depression and can’t even bathe sometimes. Mental illness f**king sucks xx

    I totally get the talking over people, I feel so rude after I do it. Then I think about it all day. I should have apologised to them. Also the having secondary thoughts. I'm watching this video but also thinking of what I need to do tomorrow and buy from the shops 😅 .. I relate alot to stuff that's floating round on platforms but then when I see people commenting 'i do that and I'm 'normal' so then I'm like hmmm.. 😂

    Pretty certain it’s what I have! I’ve been told I’ve got bpd for years and it just doesn’t fit. The stigma as well, plus explains a lot of my relationships 😂 ty

    Tools to support adhd
    Regulate yourself by getting a hobby like napping. It’s like pressing the reset button in the brain 🧠. Barrage of thoughts expecting people to be on the same wavelength. Not good with being on time. Me ✔ Neurodivergence. Impulsive behaviour. Me ✔ I don’t like to rush, I want to do things right and don’t like to measure myself with time.

    woaw yeah I am glad i have an appointment soon to get clear with that, your description of time feels so familiar. I have clocks everywhere and they need to be analog, cause digits don't mean a thing to me, i mean i have to think and translate these 4 numbers to get a time, it doesn't work, whereas with analog I see the time physically like i got this amount of space between here and now, like a cake, and it means something.
    Could you elaborate on your meds? Are you taking them every day or do some days off? How much did it change your life?

    So I’ve always enjoyed your content because I felt like I could relate to you but now I REALLY feel like I do. I’m also a very emotional, rejection sensitive person with my mind always going a million miles a minute.     Omg I’m literally the same, I wish I could afford to get diagnosed 😭 My doctor won’t refer me unless I’ve taken antidepressants for a minimum length of time and had CBT (both of which I’m doing) but even then he said they are reluctant to accept referrals, and then IF they do, it’s a 6-8 YEAR waiting list in my area!! Seeing as I’m in my 40’s it seems pointless and soul destroy waiting that long. I can’t afford to go private as the depression part and past ill health has meant I haven’t been able to work for a time
 This video has given me hope though and I feel so less alone now seeing that I’m not the only one. Thank you for doing this and for explaining so brilliantly, you have worded it in such an amazing way. I feel like there could be light at the end of the tunnel now ❀

    Who diagnosed you with ADHD? I work in mental health and counselling. You have not mentioned anything to suggest ADHD. You clearly suffer from low mood and low confidence. You assume a disliking towards yourself if someone declines an offer from you. That is not a part of ADHD. That is mental health issues. It's clear that you feel you need to be busy because if you sit still for a while you will begin to experience reflection, due to past trauma or reliving past experiences, (Educated guess due to experience in field)There's a study conducted that adults, as well as children don't suffer from ADHD. You have been wanting to label how you are feeling and have held on to this notion, as I believe you have not been diagnosed with it and hear your friends told you have traits of it. If that's the case we all have ADHD. I don't however, your description falls away from being ADHD. . (Also fidgeting is a sign of anxiety not ADHD)

      Telling someone that has adhd that its just a mood issue is really dangerous. Did you consider she maybe has both?! Honestly, i’m gobsmacked at your comment. As someone who works in counselling, you should know better. But then you’re also citing a BS study and using that as a rule of judgment which is also bad practice. Living with adhd all ones life causes one to question themselves and suffer depression and anxiety. Isn’t that obvious?
      I was labelled with simple depression by a counsellor from mental health services which caused years of not not being taken seriously regarding other symptoms. I actually have inattentive adhd and have done since birth. The signs were always there in previous reports from drs. I have it alongside ehlers danlos syndrome, a genetic disorder of collagen. As a result I have met at EDS symposiums some of the best adhd drs from all over the world when they travelled to give a talks on adhd.
      Ehlers danlos and other hypermobility spectrum disorders often come alongside adhd and autism. Its possible helen has a hypermobile gene. Many don’t know they have them, as some types are benign and don’t get sick like I do physically.
      Hyper mobility in general is extremely under diagnosed. The real number is epidemic level. I was told this by several geneticists i’ve met along the way working with EDS charity.
      The reason in the case of inattentive adhd and hypermobile patients is an issue with acetylcholine.
      There are also issues with the gut and serotonin and processing of dopamine.
      Some very good neuroscientists have shown difference between adhd brain and regular functioning and what displays a deficiency in dopamine.
      As someone who has tried strict routine, life changes and everything to get better, it doesn’t just go away. Even when my mood is fine!
      I had no depressive episodes at all, yet still these other symptoms are there. The only real improvements came when working on increasing ny acetylcholine.
      Its not just a mood issue, its executive dysfunction that results from a physical cause. Also anxiety, that too can have a physical cause. Autonomic dysfunction is also very much linked to adhd. There are a lot of studies showing this.
      I have it as a result of my nervous system being out of whack. But for years i had people telling me it was me causing it with my thoughts and depression.
      I’m a practicing buddhist and love mindfulness, meditation, CBT. They’re great, but they don’t fix adhd. Nor do antidepressants.
      I suggest you properly research before leaving comments rather than trying to put everything into a one size fits all box just because you have some experience in one area.

      I mean she literally said it in the beginning of the video, ADHD Norfolk. I think the professionals there are equipped enough to make that diagnosis. Just because you work in mental health and counselling, doesn’t qualify you do make that diagnosis. And I think it’s professionally irresponsible to do so. What is your role, as ‘work in’ could mean you’re a qualified psychiatrist or could be an admin assistant. My line of work, I do learn a lot of of things medically, but my ‘educated’ guess is just that. A guess as I’m not trained in any speciality.
      It is inappropriate to tell someone their diagnosis is wrong based on the snippets of their life they share.
      Suggesting something else to look into is one thing, but telling them outright it’s wrong ? Nah.
      And ADHD diagnosis is still very hung up on being a ‘naughty little boy’, so without being well versed in the types of ADHD, I think it is very unfair to post this.

      You can't make a formulation about someone's diagnosis after watching a 54 minute video. You're just making assumptions which could be extremely damaging in many ways. It's concerning that you say you work in mental health and made assumptions based on little information.
