  • Q: How do you solve a problem like Croydon's less than perfect 60s urbanism? A: You don't leave it to 'the market'
Both part of London and a city in its own right, Croydon's story is unique and complex. In this short documentary, the second in a two-part series from the Architecture Foundation, Phineas Harper examines the future of Croydon asking what architects, other boroughs and the Mayor can learn from Croydon's ambitious approach to planning.
This documentary is made possible thanks to the generous support of Hawkins\Brown, an architecture firm actively engaged in improving Croydon whose new bridge at East Croydon train station is featured in the film.

PART ONE: The High-Rise and Fall
Phineas Harper investigates Croydon's history, piecing together a story of big visions with a whiff of corruption.

For those wondering what the "Katy" she caught, while leaving him a mule to ride, is the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad or M-K-T. Everyone simply referred to it as the Katy. In this version John Belushi is singing. It's the opening of the Blues Brothers movie. The song is an old Blues classic.

Interesting edit at 4:38. The bridge at East Croydon doesn't actually connect both sides of the tracks yet. One of the communities mentioned is yet to be served.

There is a problem that they're doing the same as in the 1960s. They are changing the town to adapt to what it currently needs, in the 1960s it took advantage of height restrictions on buildings and the need for big companies to have headquarters which now are in central London and take up less space. Now companies need smaller headquarters and many shops in Croydon town centre are too small to accommodate modern shops so they can't sell enough product ranges to make a big enough profit so they are empty long term. In another 50 years the needs of the town will probably change again and all of the changes being made now will seem a mistake and old fashion looking.

I wonder where is Architecture Criticism?
    ‘If everyone praises your production,
    almost certainly it is rubbish.
    If everyone abuses it,
then perhaps there is something in it.
But if some praise and others abuse,
if you can split the audience in half,
then for sure it is a good production’.

It has applied for official "City" status in the past at least 9 times and been rejected. it would appear they are not giving up this fight any time soon. Many don't consider it London at all but Surrey, largely because it doesn't have a London postcode and therefor says Surrey on their mailing address.

yes i agree its not a City is it ,it a Town in Surrey Greater London
after all ,but what gets me is the self congratulatory way they seem to be saying how well they have done in Croydon and its a mess through out Croydon its a shambles
