I was with this department 1971-1981, back then things were allot different. No homeless,drugs was mainly grass, we carried revolvers,no vest. I mainly worked the coast station when the office was out up the main station on hwy 1. I went to Pismo PD then El Dorado sheriff’s dept the went back into military desert storm and retired as a military pole officer. I miss this department a bunch of great guys and gals.

How long is the academy? How many hours are the shift of an Sheriff?
Usually 21 Weeks, And shifts average at 10-12 hrs (Average of all law enforcement offices in the USA)

12-16 hour days. You would be lucky to get out with a 10 hour day depending where in the country you are working . I worked 9 years for the oc sheriff's department in cali and never worked anything less then 12 hours a day.

What's the difference between sherrif and deputy?
This is good work. In Australia we have engagement officers but also a lot of street chaplains (I am one of them). Often I offer a pie and a coke to a homeless person but not money. I was never used from homeless people, they are very thankful to get a meal. The power of humanity.

i used to work with ppl living on the street .. i can tell you the bad shit you see on vids between them and cops is not the norm .. so many of them get there 1st leg up into a normal life again by the local cops usually the sherrifs deptartment but not always

I have seen tons, and tons of body cam videos that have been freely released by police departments around the country that have set the record straight, and revealed a whole dictionary of false reports, and lies leveled against officers. And I have seen hundreds of these freely released videos involving shootings that show a 98% justifiable record on the part of the police in the use of force. You folks wanted body cams because you thought they'd show the police committing brutal acts. Instead, you found out that cops do their jobs the RIGHT way, and in an HONORABLE AND LEGAL fashion nearly every time, and that just pisses you off.

If all this is true then why do so many of you treat citizens like shit and why does every cop try to hymn everybody up any chance they get? Also the amount of times a officer has helped a homeless person compared to the daily treatment they actually give the homeless is laughable! They violate everyone's rights by demanding I.D. regardless if you have committed a crime hoping they can arrest you on a warrant. Even if your just a passenger in a car they will demand identification from everyone and if you implement your right to say no GUESS WHAT they treat you like shit and a straight criminal and if you stand firm and make them honor your rights they will throw the book at whoever is in the car. If that means writing as many tickets as they can or even sinking low enough to finding any reason to arrest you or tow the car!

You know, rather than providing a "glimpse into a day in the life of a Sheriff's Deputy", i.e. a 5 :38 propaganda video, SLOCounty Sherrif's could choose to post the actual body cam footage of their deputies on a bi-daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Footage that could be FOIA requested anyway. This way, we won't have to worry about some controversial encounter caught on cam that undermines the brand of this fine law enforcement division. We would have a record of how the public is approached and "served" for anybody to review.
If the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's office lacks the funding for this unprecedented level of transparency I have no doubt that police accountability activists would stand with them in City Hall to make this funding allocation a reality.
