    I live in rural Illinois, and someone dumped a male Bassett down the road away from the house. My wife and I took him in . What a dog! Stubborn..my gosh he could stare down a Missouri mule. Having worked a ring where he ran (agility club near Buffalo) he had a habit of getting on top of the A-frame or dog walk and just enjoying being tall. What you can't hear in this video is just HOW HYPED his mom had to get to get him "wound up," but once The Diesel was warmed up, there was power in spades. There sure are times when a basset hound can get rambunctious and is full of energy, but anybody who has ever taken a basset for a walk has found out that their energy goes from Full-On to Okay-I'm-pooped-so-carry-me-the-rest-of-the-way-home in next to no time. I'm amazed at the stamina that Diesel had in this event! I was half-expecting him to stop about halfway through and just plop down for a nap, like every self-respecting basset hound would have done. I was so proud of my Roscoe when he went down the stairs in the back of my parents yard. He was scared at first but encouraged him it was OK and he could do it. With hesitation he took his first couple steps down then in the "oh crap" mindset he ran down and made it! He was so happy and I was too we both started to howl. One of the proudest moments I'll carry with me for the rest of my life 🥲.

      +Alex Reiser One and a half years ago , I had a special needs basset named Oreo. She only had one eye and one lung and the other eye and lung were failing. She also had to have leg reconstructive surgery. Through all of this she was as pleasant as could be. When I held up the bottle of eye drops, she would tilt back her head. When I changed her leg bandages she stood as still as a statue. She has been gone now for 11/2 years and I miss her terribly, but she lived to the age of ten and was only expected to see her fifth birthday. I am thankful to God and hope to get another one or two next summer.

    • @KagariAsuha
      @KagariAsuha Před 4 lety +22

      Collies famously do not ‘live to obey’, they live to work. They will relentlessly outsmart and sass any owner who isn’t up to the task of keeping them in their place and giving them proper mental stimulation. A bored Collie will make your life a living hell. Retriever breeds are typically the kinds of dog that live to please, but even they will lose all respect for an owner that doesn’t train them properly.

    • @DrZaius3141
      @DrZaius3141 Před 4 lety +9

      That's a bit of an oversimplification. The intelligence of a dog decides whether or not they can learn tricks, the obedience decides whether they want to learn tricks. Neither of these traits is strictly positive or negative and they don't necessarily correlate with each other.
      Also, smart people/animals will (and should) strive to sharpen their minds, learning tricks is part of that.

    • @cailewis9089
      @cailewis9089 Před 4 lety +8

      Collies absolutely do not 'live to obey', they live to be worked hard. If they do not get enough exercise and stimulation they can get sick or have mental problems.
