What to Do When Your PTO Shaft Won't Extend

  • It's pretty frustrating when you get all backed up to the brush hog (or finish mower, or tiller) and get the three point all hooked up and you get ready to extend the PTO to get it attached and it won't come out. Then you're stuck with the tractor in the way of getting at a good angle to pull and yank on the shaft until it extends...and maybe it won't! The purpose of this video is to discuss why that PTO shaft won't come out and some options to resolve the situation.
    There are two pieces to a PTO shaft. One end that has a larger "female" shaft inside and the other with the smaller "male" part that slides inside of it. When the shaft won't move in or out usually there are one of two problems present, one that you can repair and one you can't.
    Let's talk about the bad one first, the one you can't repair. If the shaft is bent anywhere in the area the two pieces slide together, it's done. Best option is to go buy a new PTO shaft from your local dealer or farm supply store. Any "tweak" of ever-so-slight bend in those shafts and it's productive life is over. That can happen when the implement is raised too high and contacts the deck of the implement, or when the implement (usually a cutter) is driven through a ditch. Here's a link to a video where I show what can happen: • The Quickest and Easie...
    Hopefully, if you have this happen, it's the other problem, and that is, they're just stuck. That happens a lot when the machine is stored outside and a little water gets in between those two shafts, forms some rust, and prevents them from sliding apart. In the video I give you a couple of options for getting them apart if that has happened. When you get them apart, make sure to keep a thin layer of grease on the parts that slide together from then on, hopefully you'll never have this problem again. Good luck!

    Mine was stuck hard on a used shredder I bought.. I hooked a chain to the end of the shaft, ran it under the tractor to the bucket on the loader with the bucket swiveled down, and pulled the shaft out by swiveling the bucket up. Easy as it can be, even for 57 year old me.

    My trick was to tie a tow strap around the end of the shaft and to the drawbar on the tractor and drive forward until it broke free and slid out. After I did this a couple times i figured out that storing the entire shaft in the shop with the two halves separated during the winter would keep it from seizing up on me

      +Moto Shooter You're stealing my thunder...one of my future videos recommends taking the whole thing off if its going to be outside in the winter and storing it in the garage. You take it one step further by separating the halves so you can lubricate them as you're putting them back together. GREAT IDEA!

    Vibration and PBR Blaster worked for me. Tied a concrete vibrator around the shaft, lubed the shaft at the joint with PB Blaster and turned on the vibrator. A half hour later the shaft slid apart without further assistance. I've done the same using an electric pad sander.

    I had a stuck PTO shaft recently. I discovered a fairly easy way to pull the stuck pieces apart. By accident I used an oscillating saw ( the ones that move a small distance but at 12,000 times per minute) to cut away a portion of the plastic shield to get penetrating oil between the male & female shats. After about 1 minute of cutting plastic, the shafts just fell apart. The saws vibration was transferred along the metal shafts and just broke loose that fast.

    My opinion if the male & female are frozen. Use a sledgehammer to jar it lose if possible. When it does move minimally, poor oil down the end of the outer shaft and keep using the hammer.

    A local tractor shop is a total ripoff. They said they need to look at it to price repair, kept it three days and did nothing when I call them for some idea when they will get to it and an idea of price they said "next week $200". Therefore I picked it up before they robbed me. If you have a deep freezer (or plenty of room in any freezer) freeze it 48+ hours and pull it chained to a tree.

I put the tractor end in my hay shed while the rest of the auger is attached to a large post. The lady at my local tractor dealer said not to separate the ends and always keep them together. What is the best way when storing the auger outside?

    I've got a 67 AC D17 using an unknown brand of pull behind type rotary cutter. Cutting an old overgrown garden at the house, I hit a random, no point in being there, chunk of granite. In doing so, my PTO shaft twisted the sleeve coming from the cutter.
    My question being; would it be possible to cut off and weld on a new piece of that sleeve since it only bent roughly 12"-15"? Or would I be better off to buy another PTO shaft?

    • @TractorMike
      @TractorMike  Před 8 lety

      Are you talking about an overrunning clutch? That's the only PTO extension that I'm familiar with and I don't think they'd cause additional wear on the driveline as long as the shaft is not too long when one is installed.

  • @ChasCo24

    Mike, I have a rhino rotary cutter with a driveshaft that will not extend. I tried everything to get it to work without success. So I decided to remove the shaft but I can get the ujoint off the gearbox shaft. It has a shearpin connection. I removed the shearpin but there is a collar on the gearbox shaft that will not let the ujoint slide off. Any idea how to remove the collar?

    • @TractorMike
      @TractorMike  Před 6 lety

      A lot of cutters will have a snap ring back there to keep the whole shaft from coming off if the shear pin breaks. Usually they're pretty fun to get out and then again to get back in without special tools. It could just be a ring, open on one end that that sets in a groove that can be pried out, its hard to know without seeing it. Guys that work on that stuff all the time can get those rings out easily, for the rest of us it's somewhat of an ordeal. Good luck.

    • @TractorMike
      @TractorMike  Před 6 lety

      Well, it's either a "live" PTO with a two stage clutch, or, the less common, "independent" PTO. Have someone watching the PTO while you're running the tractor. Engage it, then push down the clutch. If it's "live", the PTO will stop with the clutch down. If it's "independent" it will be spinning regardless of where the clutch is and you shouldn't have to touch the clutch to engage the PTO, just move the lever back.
