- After the February Revolution in Russian empire (1917), when the king was dethroned and the empire began to crumble, ukrainians finally got a chance to create their own country. On January 22nd of 1918, UNR (Ukrainian People's Republic) became independent and already had to fight on three fronts: against russian communists, russian monarchists and polish. This song inspired ukrainian youth of that time, which took an active part in that war, to protect their newly founded country! Young, brave, filled with ideas of their own independent Motherland ukrainians became the foundation of UNR's army.
