    There’s also a Bristol that comes in smooth instead of vellum if you want that extra smooth texture which I like using for softer looking skin textures

    You produce great artwork. I have purchased a few Canson pastel papers recently but I didn't try out Strathmore. Your suggestions are of great help. Thanks

    OMG thank you Jessica! I wanted to see a comparison of all three, I’ve compared the 300 to the 500 but I had no idea what the 400 was like and I didn’t particularly want to buy it as I have too much paper already😂 I love the 500 vellum, I’ve tried it with graphite, charcoal and colored pencil so far and it’s my new favorite paper. I don’t like the texture of the 300 paper, it looks much more uneven and the grooves are weird and kinda “curvy” as weird as that sounds😄

    • @jessicamatheneyfineart
      @jessicamatheneyfineart  Před 3 lety +1

      Glad it was helpful! That's funny because I actually prefer the texture of the 300 better, works really great for fur with a slice tool, not so much with the 400 and 500. But I assume that has to do with the lower quality wood pulp being used to get that texture for the 300, so it isn't the best to use for professional work.

    We agree completely on paper. The only time I go away from Strathmore Bristol is the much cheaper paper I use for sketching/practice.

    • @jessicamatheneyfineart

      I really love Strathmore paper, they have such a wide variety and really do make quality paper too. I just wish they'd make a smoother version of their 500 series bristol vellum that's in-between that and their plate surface, the textures of the 300,400, and 500 bristol vellum are not the same, and the 500 series is a little too textured for fine fur work on smaller sized drawings. This is where I do prefer using arches hot presses watercolor paper instead, it has one side that's like the 500 series bristol vellum, and another that's smoother, in-between vellum and plate.

    I tried bunch of papers/sketchbooks from Fabriano thru Moleskine to some random blocks brands I found in art supply stores, honestly Moleskine basic smooth takes color best, for me for now but it is kinda expensive and here I can only get ones in solid covers what is dissadvantage due to drawings being stuck in, but recently I found Hahnemühle brand which seems pretty cheap to me and Nostalgie set of sketchbooks from them which should be very smooth and made for detailed pencil drawing also natural white color so shouldn't be too bright, 190g/m³, so I'll see if I stuck to those or will try some from your video..
    I also like dark papers as there you can use white and bright pencils and whole drawing outstands with it

    Have you tried Strathmore tone series (Blue, Grey and Tan) for your wonderful realism drawings?

    • @jessicamatheneyfineart
      @jessicamatheneyfineart  Před rokem +1

      I have tried the toned gray, but I just prefer white and feel I have better results with using white paper.

      I would say the 400 and 500 series are more textured and would give you more layers.

      Personally I do think Faber-Castell Polychromos are the best colored pencils, I use them for all of my drawings.

    Thank you, but I have two questions. What is your pencil brand used for this type of paper? And second, do you have an Instagram? If so, what is it?

    • @jessicamatheneyfineart
      @jessicamatheneyfineart  Před 3 lety

      I use Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils. And yes, I have an instagram, there is link to my instagram in the video description, as well as a link to my website where I have lists of all the supplies I use for colored pencils.

    Vellum papers are grainier than the smooth finish so you can get more layers in vellum surface.

    • @jessicamatheneyfineart
      @jessicamatheneyfineart  Před 2 lety +1

      You're right, which makes the vellum surface the most ideal for colored pencils!
