There’s also a Bristol that comes in smooth instead of vellum if you want that extra smooth texture which I like using for softer looking skin textures
Yes there is actually two, semi-smooth and plate.
Your animal drawings are gorgeous and amazing! Thank you for sharing your expertise and experience. Again, the way you draw the animals is masterpiece level. God bless you!
Thank you! I have even wondering about that!! Your work is soo beautiful!
You are so welcome, and thanks!
Thank you for this video review. I used some of those paper myself for doodling, and they're quite nice.

Awesome explanation of the 3 sets of paper. Thank you very much
Glad it was helpful!
You produce great artwork. I have purchased a few Canson pastel papers recently but I didn't try out Strathmore. Your suggestions are of great help. Thanks
Thank you very much! Strathmore really does make such great quality papers for a variety of purposes, they are the main brand of paper I use!
Thank you for this!!!
You're so welcome!
OMG thank you Jessica! I wanted to see a comparison of all three, I’ve compared the 300 to the 500 but I had no idea what the 400 was like and I didn’t particularly want to buy it as I have too much paper already😂 I love the 500 vellum, I’ve tried it with graphite, charcoal and colored pencil so far and it’s my new favorite paper. I don’t like the texture of the 300 paper, it looks much more uneven and the grooves are weird and kinda “curvy” as weird as that sounds😄
Glad it was helpful! That's funny because I actually prefer the texture of the 300 better, works really great for fur with a slice tool, not so much with the 400 and 500. But I assume that has to do with the lower quality wood pulp being used to get that texture for the 300, so it isn't the best to use for professional work.
Thanks a lot..
Damn Jessica your artworks are just photorealistic...you have a new subscriber 🙋🙋
Thank you so much!
We agree completely on paper. The only time I go away from Strathmore Bristol is the much cheaper paper I use for sketching/practice.
I really love Strathmore paper, they have such a wide variety and really do make quality paper too. I just wish they'd make a smoother version of their 500 series bristol vellum that's in-between that and their plate surface, the textures of the 300,400, and 500 bristol vellum are not the same, and the 500 series is a little too textured for fine fur work on smaller sized drawings. This is where I do prefer using arches hot presses watercolor paper instead, it has one side that's like the 500 series bristol vellum, and another that's smoother, in-between vellum and plate.
Thank you very much !
You're welcome!
Wonderful video! Thank you so very much for creating it. It answered all my questions about Bristol paper. 👍😊
That's awesome!
Very very informative video
Glad you liked it. :)
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
I want to know how bristol paper is made if anyone knows where I can go to learn it would help me out a lot
Can we use this for watercolor in lieu of hot pressed watercolor pad? Thanks
I tried bunch of papers/sketchbooks from Fabriano thru Moleskine to some random blocks brands I found in art supply stores, honestly Moleskine basic smooth takes color best, for me for now but it is kinda expensive and here I can only get ones in solid covers what is dissadvantage due to drawings being stuck in, but recently I found Hahnemühle brand which seems pretty cheap to me and Nostalgie set of sketchbooks from them which should be very smooth and made for detailed pencil drawing also natural white color so shouldn't be too bright, 190g/m³, so I'll see if I stuck to those or will try some from your video..
I also like dark papers as there you can use white and bright pencils and whole drawing outstands with it
That's awesome, never tried that paper before!
Wwwoooooww🤩🤩 great
Thanks!
wow the best vid comparison so far!complete information. strathmore are not cheap so I need to think twice before buying the right one. i already have the 300 vellum and tone tan so far i like them for my prisma colored pencil its just the tooth are bit visible. can I ask does the 400,500 or colored pencil have smaller tooth that will be less visible? thnks you for this vid bu the way!
Out of the 3 vellum types, the 300 has the smoothest (less visible) surface.
Have you tried Strathmore tone series (Blue, Grey and Tan) for your wonderful realism drawings?
I have tried the toned gray, but I just prefer white and feel I have better results with using white paper.
which paper amoung this is better for adding more layers? awesome drawings by the way😍
I would say the 400 and 500 series are more textured and would give you more layers.
Shit, i tought you were a big youtuber, you ll get there dont worry
Thanks!
Can you pls tell what's best color pencil
Personally I do think Faber-Castell Polychromos are the best colored pencils, I use them for all of my drawings.
Thank you, but I have two questions. What is your pencil brand used for this type of paper? And second, do you have an Instagram? If so, what is it?
I use Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils. And yes, I have an instagram, there is link to my instagram in the video description, as well as a link to my website where I have lists of all the supplies I use for colored pencils.
Vellum papers are grainier than the smooth finish so you can get more layers in vellum surface.
You're right, which makes the vellum surface the most ideal for colored pencils!
they should sponsor you because you sold me on it.
Haha, thanks for watching my video!
