Do We Need to “Go to Synagogue”?

  • As I am uploading this video I realize there's a confusion that could easily arise. I'll try to clear it up here.
The NT does not teach all believers to actually attend literal synagogues. Nor do we have any examples I know of where Gentile converts to Christianity ever attended, or were told to attend synagogues literally. I am speaking here of the common practice of evangelism where we seek out public opportunities and locations to tell people about Jesus and the gospel. This is an area where Christians in general could use a lot more boldness and intentionality. Go for it!

Posting this in a totally random spot but wanted to share with Mike. Today my 10 year old grandson asked me for a CZcams recommendation. He's very spiritual and interested in the Bible. I've tried to interest him in your videos before but I think they're too deep for him. Today, I told him to find you in my subscriptions, then go to your shorts. He listened and listened. Then two times later today, in different settings, I heard him listening to more of your shorts. Blessed my heart so much. I asked him if he liked your videos and he said he did. Love that so much.

Once that is done they will reap the results of what they decide. And you have done what Christ told us in the Great Commission! keep it up until you cannot. Not sure which "older generation" you're familiar with. I'm 71, and maybe I just never got the memo, but I have not been at all reticent to share my viewpoint on social or religious issues. In fact, I am always reminded of the story of when Winston Churchill was invited to a dinner party. The hostess assured him that her guests were warned not to bring up religion or politics in order to avoid argument. He then replied, "Then I shan't come, for I would feel as though I had Nothing to talk about."

Sharing the gospel is certainly challenging sometimes, but I think we have to keep in mind what is our responsibility versus grown adults and thier responsibility unto the Lord. Putting the ball in their court is an important test to see if they will bounce back. You ask questions and prod gently to see if there is receptiveness. Sometimes it's best to just plant seeds and keep moving....

Mike had a great breakdown on knocking the dust off their feet. In the context of this passage the Son of Man would return for them before the gospel reached all the towns of Israel. The point being made in this instance was that time was absolutely of the essence so in their mission, in that season, if a town rejected them they were to hurry to the next as Christ would be coming to collect them all again shortly.
The prodigal Son is a great example of how we are not to pursue those who flee from God, but warmly welcome them if they repent.

Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 1And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”

It also came in the Book of Exodus in more than one place that Pharaoh said to Moses and Aaron, “Pray for me” (Exodus 8: 25-29, and Exodus 9: (27)... Thus, the Bible claims that Pharaoh wanted good and wanted Moses and Aaron to pray him.. and he was eager to do good.. but the Lord is the one who hardened.
Fry it!! God far above that . 18 God complains to Moses an insult. Israel to him: It came in the Book of Numbers (chapter 14): “And the Lord said to Moses: How long will this people insult me!!! Until when will I forgive this evil group that grumbles against me?! And he pardoned the children of Israel and gave them all their requests, and he regretted what he had done to them and wrote a new covenant to give them the land of Yeni.
Canaan.” 19 The deceived Lord - Moses’ wife deceives the Lord - the Bible depicts that Zipporah, Moses’ wife, was able to deceive the Lord. The Bible claims that the Lord was very angry with Moses because Moses, like the rest of the children of Israel, was a coward and refused the Lord’s command to go to Pharaoh in fear and division And the Lord announced that He would descend to kill the firstborn son of Moses, because Moses refused to save the children of Israel from the hand of Pharaoh, and the Lord descended, according to their claim, to the road and began looking for the firstborn son of Moses to kill him.The son of Moses was a small child playing in the alleys and alleys of Egypt...and the Lord God attacked But Zipporah, Moses' wife, was faster than him, and quickly took the child, and since she knew that the Lord wanted to kill her son, she deceived him, and cut the boy's foreskin with a knife that she had with her, and took the blood, and touched the Lord's feet with this blood, and Zipporah cried out, "You are my bridegroom of blood!" So the Lord spared the boy - then Zipporah said: “A blood bridegroom for circumcision” (See the full story in Exodus chapter 4).

This was one of the first distortions that occurred in the Christian religion with cunning from Paul, then Paul returned with Barnabas to Antioch again, and after a not- so- short companionship, they began an intense dispute, because Paul announced the abrogation of the provisions of the Bible! And he saw and said to him (that it was a curse that we got rid of forever), and his claim that (Christ came to replace an old era with a new era), and to borrow from Greek philosophy the idea of God’s connection to the earth, through the word or the Son of God or the Holy Spirit, then all of this resulted in saying The innovated doctrine of crucifixion and redemption.
God is alive. Paul disputed with Peter, who opposed him and attacked him. Thus, deviation and distortion began in the books revealed in the Torah and the Gospel, and the deviation continued in them, and additions and decreases are still taking place in these books revealed by God Almighty. Among the most important texts that were distorted in the Bible; Those texts that call for the worship of Him alone, and that show that God, Glory be to Him, is Ever- Sustaining, Self- Sufficient, Creator, Owner, Ruler, He has no girlfriend or son, and among the most important texts that have been distorted in the Bible are those that refer to the coming of the Prophet - may God’s prayers and peace be upon him - and call to believe in it. As for the purpose of the distortion, it differs according to the desires of the distorters. Some of them were distorting the Bible because of their enmity towards the Jews, and among them were those who distorted it for the sake of the desires of kings and sultans, and among them were those who distorted it because of their hatred of Islam, Muslims, and the Prophet of Islam, the Seal of the Prophets, Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace. .

@@jidoorifalcon i dont think you guys really understand marian doctrine.
no one is saying Mary is omnipotent or that she should be worshiped. we are in agreement that Mary is created by God and is a human and not a part of the Trinity, and that only the Trinity should be worshiped.
we disagree about the role of Mary in our salvation as mother of God, and about her place as "blessed among women."
The Angel Gabriel at the annunciation calls this to her, "hello Mary! blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb!"
later at the visitation with her cousin Elizabeth, the woman exclaims, "what an honor that the mother of my Lord would come to visit me!" and Marys song or the "Magnificat" might be familiar to you. Our Lady says, "my soul magnifies the Lord!" and also, the important part, "surely every generation will call me blessed!" this is the basis for the rosary prayer known as the Hail Mary. its scripture. it is not idolatry and its not worship to Mary.
to insist that Our Lady isn't God's Mother is to insist that Jesus isn't fully God. this is the Nestorian heresy and it was declared heresy in the 300s.
Mary is not the origin of the Godhead, because the Godhead has no origin. but Mary is declared the Theotokos or "God-bearer" or "mother of God" because she carried the Divine Infant in her womb. (She carried in pregnancy the fullness of God's Nature, for her Infant was indeed God).

For me personally I wouldn't go for the sake of having to go as there's no clear-cut requirement within Christianity for Christians to go to a synagogue. However, some Christians may choose to visit a synagogue to gain a better understanding of Judaism, considering Christianity originated from Judaism, as Larry Hurtado notes in his book How On Earth Did Jesus Become A God?: Historical Questions About Earliest Devotion To Jesus "Given that Jesus and his first followers were Jews, lived in a Jewish culture, and interpreted their faith in light of Jewish Scriptures, one cannot comprehend early Christianity outside its Jewish context."

That last part is always where I have problems. Not a problem with it, but it is one. The fact I have to spell that out with a second sentence, evidences that point.
I speak respectfully to those around me, not pastor rushing, but the lay people. Often, this is returned with a judgment. Maybe they thought I was judging them or pointing it out to them because I wanted to get them to stop. Often it is not recieved for debate. So, within a church, this atmosphere often leads to a lack of an ability to debate without getting ostracized. They start to find out everything you are doing, in hopes of stopping the debate. *Social pressure over substance.*
Outside the church, no one wants to hear it. Some of it is due to people forcing their opinions on others. Some of it is the changing society. Like it or not, Christianity has a reputation here. That is what you are fighting, even if you personally have never done anything. That is more similar to Paul than many Christians seem to think.
Still, spilling tea is the fastest way to discredit an enemy in todays world. The tongue is a dangerous weapon. Facts are much slower & often ineffective. You can use them. Rhetoric is far more impactful than facts, unfortunately. My opinion, but it seems so.
I find it leaves me with looking to live with them, not against them. I am not telling you how to act, as everything I say is up for debate, but that is what I am doing. If you bring Hell, you have it in your heart. A man brings out only what he has.
The funniest thing is, I said this to the general, "you", but I am sure some will take it personally. If it isn't you, why apply it? Something to think about, as we all do it.

*Miracles and Apotheosis in the Ancient Mediterranean World*
*"It should first be noted that miracle stories are not uncommon in the literature of this period.* Ancient people believed in a world permeated by the supernatural and readily accepted stories of miracles and believed in stories of visions and visitors from the world of the divine all the time. *Even very sober and sometimes sceptical historians like Tacitus will pass on accounts of miracles that he clearly accepts and expects his audience to believe as historical.*
So when we read stories of how the emperor Augustus was miraculously conceived by the god Apollo, or how his birth was presaged by a new star in the heavens, or how Julius Caesar was seen ascending into the heaven after his death or how Vespasian healed lame and blind people who asked him for a miracle, we accept that these stories represent the kinds of things ancient people genuinely believed about great men. Or we accept that they are at least told to indicate that the man in question was great. *What we don't do is accept that simply because people believed these stories they must mean that they really happened.*
And this is even when the stories are presented to us by a very careful historian and given to us as verified fact. Take Tacitus' account of the miracles of the emperor Vespasian:
"In the months during which Vespasian was waiting at Alexandria for the periodical return of the summer gales and settled weather at sea, many wonders occurred which seemed to point him out as the object of the favour of heaven and of the partiality of the Gods. One of the common people of Alexandria, well known for his blindness, threw himself at the Emperor's knees, and implored him with groans to heal his infirmity. This he did by the advice of the God Serapis, whom this nation, devoted as it is to many superstitions, worships more than any other divinity. .... And so Vespasian, supposing that all things were possible to his good fortune, and that nothing was any longer past belief, with a joyful countenance, amid the intense expectation of the multitude of bystanders, accomplished what was required. *The hand was instantly restored to its use, and the light of day again shone upon the blind. Persons actually present attest both facts, even now when nothing is to be gained by falsehood."* (Histories, IV, 81)
Tacitus was closely connected to the court of Vespasian's sons and successors, Titus and Domitian, and so in a position to know the "persons actually present" and to consult them long after Vespasian's death "when nothing is to be gained by falsehood". He was also a very careful historian who scorned those who took rumour and stories as fact without checking them against sources and eye witnesses and who condemned those who "catch eagerly at wild and improbable rumours in preference to genuine history" (Annals, IV,11).
*Despite this, I don't know anyone who would read the account above and conclude that the emperor really had magical healing powers and genuinely used his supernatural abilities to heal people.* The fact that even a judicious and often sceptical analyst like Tacitus accepted this story shows us just how readily people in the ancient world accepted claims of the miraculous.
*One form of miracle that was widely believed in was the idea of apotheosis, where a great man is physically taken up in to the heavens and raised to divine status.* It was claimed that Romulus, the founder of Rome, underwent this process and later appeared to his friend Julius Proculus to declare his new celestial status. The same claim was made about Julius Caesar and Augustus, with supposed witnesses observing their ascent into the heavenly realm. Lucian's satire The Passing of Peregrinus includes his scorn for the claim that the philosopher was taken up into the celestial realm and was later seen walking around on earth after his death. The Chariton novel Callirhoe has its hero Chaereas visiting the tomb of his recently dead wife, saying he *"arrived at the tomb at daybreak"* where he *"found the stones removed and the entrance open. At that he took fright."* Others are afraid to enter the tomb, but Chaereas goes in and finds his wife's *body missing* and concludes she has been taken up by the gods."

Hey there, your question reminded me of this verse: "Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." (Prov. 4:23)
Scripture also says: "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”
      (Jer. 17:9‭-‬10)
We have "all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." (Rom. 3:23) ever since the fall of humanity when Adam and Eve chose to rebel against God, every human heart is inherently bent away from Christ - producing in us SIN. sin is anything we think, say, feel, or do that is not honouring to God. Our whole beings are corrupted by sin, so that "all our righteous works are like filthy rags" (Isaiah 64:6) before God. It says in that chapter and in Romans 3 that no one seeks God - all have turned away from Him. Who can save us now?
BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS that Jesus took upon Himself the just punishment for ALL the sins of the world through His willing, sacrificial death on a cross. "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Rom. 6:23) you don't have to stay where you are, haunted by your past, and plagued by your guilt, sin, and shame. JESUS has come, and because He fully paid the price for your sins and defeated sin, Satan, and death forever thru His resurrection, you can have eternal life in Him if you put your trust in Him as Lord and Saviour. BECAUSE OF WHAT JESUS HAS DONE AND ACHIEVED ONCE FOR ALL (WOOOO PRAISE THE LORD) YOU CAN BE MADE A NEW CREATION IN CHRIST JESUS!! God offers you forgiveness bc of what Jesus has done sacrificially, reconciliation with Him, and NEW LIFE through Him and His Holy Spirit that He gives to everyone who puts their trust in Jesus Christ alone for the forgiveness of sins, bc only Jesus could pay the price for our wrongdoing and wicked behaviour - only in Him is there life - and life to the FULLEST. (John 10:10) this not based on the world's standards but on God's standards - He is God and life and true joy and peace are found in Jesus alone and in following Him - not for the sake of the joy and peace but for HIM Himself, for He is so good, and He loves you unconditionally (bc that's who He is! Though He is also perfectly holy, perfectly wise, sovereign, powerful, beautiful, kind, gentle, lowly, perfectly good) and desires for you to be in loving relationship with Him, who created you.
If you put your trust in Christ, your identity is no longer in who you were BEFORE you came to Him - that's dead and gone. It's in Jesus Christ alone and what HE did for you - living the perfect life we never could and being the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Put your trust in Jesus alone and come humbly to the throne of grace. We do not deserve God's love or grace at all, but He freely offers it to all who would come to Him through Jesus and surrender their lives to Him.
I want to encourage you to not lose hope!! TURN TO JESUS for the forgiveness of sins and resurrection of the body and spirit! "in Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it."

"I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people, and I will be their God."
      Ezekiel 11:19‭-‬20
^ this miraculous heart change and becoming a TRULY new person can only come about by the power of God that raised Jesus Christ, the Son of God, from the dead. You cannot find identity or worth in and of yourself - we are all corrupted by sin :( but turn to JESUS for in Him is life! I'm being repetitive haha but I cannot stress it enough. Only Jesus can save us from ourselves.
And in Christ, God will slowly but surely continue to make new and perfect those who He has redeemed with His blood. This is a lifelong process but the One who "began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus" (Phil. 1:6). He will not give up on us. Turn to Him. We cannot do anything on our own strength to save ourselves or make us holy in God's sight or really truly fix things. And though this world is still stained by sin and we will still struggle with sin while on earth, God has the power to redeem our situations and lives for His glory and our good.
May you find healing in Jesus's Name and peace that passes all understanding, whatever may come your way. You will find this thru trusting in Jesus Christ alone. Yes we don't deserve it, but turn to Him anyways, bc He is our only hope and He is gracious and good.

Forgot to add - we need to repent - turn from - our sins and find Christ Jesus
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."
      2 Corinthians 5:17‭-‬21
Lmk if that all makes sense or if you have any questions! (response times may not be the best though haha. Would also encourage you to talk to a pastor of a Christ centered, Bible-teaching church or someone you trust abt all this, someone who can help and guide and journey with you appropriately in Christ)
His grace, forgiveness, redemption is not smth just theoretical but it's REAL and more powerful than death itself! I've experienced God's grace in my own life, especially last year when I was in a really really bad place due to my own bad decisions and sin against God :((( despite my brokenness, God forgave me, cleansed and renewed me, and did what only He could do and made all things new. There were still consequences for my sin, but I look back and see not only the self inflicted bad part, but a beautiful story of God's faithfulness, grace, and redemption. 🙏🙏
Even His discipline is done in love, so that we can have the grace of being made more like Jesus! ❤️ He is truly so good. All praise be to God!

We are where we have decided to be. Once saved that does not negate your choice to follow Christ. He is here for the failures and the wounded and the victims alike. So, you are what you decide to do. Repentance is a decision, letting the door open to Jesus is a decision. It is where you have decided to be. You become more than you were because once you believe Christ lives within you as the Holy Spirit and you are a new being. Step up and take all you want. You are not ever the same as you were. Embrace that concept and set your self free.

2 The Lord commands to take the rain:
(Deuteronomy 23 (19) You shall not force your brother to be innocent... To a foreigner you may lend usury. But to your brother you shall not pinch usury, that the Lord your God may bless you in all that you place your hand on in the land that you are entering to possess it. Deuteronomy 15 (1) This is the judgment of innocent release Every owner in his hand of what he has loaned to his owner does not demand from his friend or his brother, because he has promised to exonerate the Lord. Judges chapter 1:19 God could not expel them because their chariots were iron, and the Lord was with Judah, so He ruled the mountain, but He did not expel the inhabitants of the valley because they had chariots of iron, the Lord condones him and grieves and forgets and grieves in his heart, according to their claim
The Bible portrays the Lord Almighty as a very penitent person. “When the sons of God - i.e. the sons of Adam and Eve - began to marry the daughters of men - i.e. the daughters of Adam who committed fornication with Satan Lilith and the daughters of Eve who fornicated with a group of devils, as they claim - the Lord was very angry because of the faults in the lineages and decided that his soul does not remain in man, just as he decided to exterminate Whosoever land on it, and regret it
Man's work is creator!!! It came in the Book of Genesis (Chapter 6): And it happened when people began to multiply in the land, and he was born, and then he was born. That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were good, so they took for themselves wives of all that they chose. And the Lord said, My spirit shall not abide in man forever. For his falsehood is human, and the Lord saw that the evil of man had multiplied on the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of the heart of the mother was evil. Earth - by the Flood, except for Toh, who was from the offspring of God's sons and God's daughters!!!
Let the daughters of men entertain - the Lord also introduced: “And the Lord said in his heart: No

The difference of each gospel in the death of Jesus reveals the distortion of the gospels
There is a discrepancy between the three Gospels regarding the death of Jesus on Saturday, April 15 (according to Matthew 17:26 and 1:27).
And between the Gospel of John, which confirms that Jesus died on Friday, April 14 (John 1:13 14:19 - 21:19), and this is not consistent at all with the concept of absolute revelation of God.
He saw the women at the grave an angel in the Gospel of Matthew (2:20), and he was a young man according to Mark (5:18), except that they saw two men at Luke (424) and at John (12:20) two angels

So are synagogues the same as small group ministries today?

    • @breadmcdonald
      @breadmcdonald Před 11 měsíci

This is my question as well. I interpret it as it being basically the church building where your church is located and does its services. I could be wrong though and have the same question as you.

    • @sidwhiting665
      @sidwhiting665 Před 11 měsíci +2

Probably the synagogue is more formal. Pastor Mike mentions they were used for praise (songs and hymns), scripture readings, and a message. Most small groups I have attended don't offer specific praise time and are more of a "get to know your fellow church goers" and maybe a book study from a Christian author or topical discussion (i.e. Christian marriage, raising kids to be followers of Jesus).
      *
So synagogue would be like "mini-church".

Ok so the temple was just a place to be reconciled and have communion with God but the synagogues were a place to learn more of God? Also if that is true, how can anyone know more about God outside of communion with Him?

    • @dagwould
      @dagwould Před 11 měsíci

Mike's point is the 'synagogue' today is any place where you can 'gossip the gospel' and bring the light of Christ to the world. It's anywhere where people are listening.
      .
An example a friend of mine who in his philosophy degree would constantly and ably challenge the lecturers from a Christian understanding of reality. He was always polite, demonstrated wide reading and deep understanding of contrary positions, and had a couple of invitations to give short talks during lectures on his viewpoint he was so articulate. He remained friends with many of his professors, sharing meals with them, having a drink at the bar...because he studied hard, thought hard and could discuss, not just 'lay verses' on people.
