  • Just how committed are companies worldwide to climate protection? The London-based Carbon Disclosure Project has been taking a closer look to see what measures companies are taking to combat climate change.
    The institute examined 12,000 companies around the world and found that only a fraction are committed to measures to stop climate change.
    A mere 272 companies meet one of the three criteria needed for a top score. That's just two percent of all the firms surveyed. The companies must prove they are reducing emissions and that their climate protection plans stand up to scientific scrutiny. In Germany, just one firm, the flavor manufacturer Symrise, is judged to be a truly environmentally friendly company.
    In all, 14 German companies made it onto the list of active climate protectors, including rail operator Deutsche Bahn, Deutsche Telekom , steelmaker ThyssenKrupp and software group SAP. SAP is committed to climate neutral operations by 2023, while ThyssenKrupp has also pledged to produce its steel in a climate-neutral way in the future.

    Criteria set by whom? And how? With a single focus on co2 emissions, while we have many more things to worry about. This crazy single-focus on Co2 is going to wreak havoc in our economies and societies. The high inflation we are seeing is just one of the side effects of these crazy green policies. Climate change is one of the issues we have to deal with. There are a lot more: energy security and affordability, national security and robustness of the national defense system, just to name a few. This co2-only approach is childish and self-destructing.

  • @alexgoslar4057
    @alexgoslar4057 Před rokem

    If the system is imperfect, then the system needs to be changed.
    In most cases, it is governance that is at fault for not progressing in curbing the CO2 emission.
    A financially rewarding Carbon-reduction Scheme that would be open to citizens of every participating Nation, is a viable option. Nations that are committed to this scheme, as well as participating industrial enterprises will be motivated to find innovative ways of reducing their carbon emissions through a similar reward system. For example, Nations could earn their points by reducing military exercises that consume an extraordinary amount of fossil fuel. If only half the world's population reduces the energy that causes carbon emissions by 10%, we could halt the dire progression of climate change.
    Best regards,
    Alex Goslar

      Most of the world doesn’t produce most of the worlds carbon emissions. The richest 10% produce half of global emissions. And the poorest half about 12% of global emissions. Billionaires produce a million times more atmospheric carbon than the average person outside the richest 10% of humanity. Inequality drives climate change from the top, and the threat of poverty and deprivation prevents political action from the bottom. Current global wealth is approx half a quadrillion dollars, but that doesn’t even come close to the value of the biosphere. It is priceless.

    I don’t think climate change will be stopped. I think our best bet is finding ways to minimize negative impacts of climate change.
    We can look to the Dutch for guidance on protecting cities from flooding. We can identify the most at-risk areas and stop new constructions there now.
    We can work on implementing new technologies to make our food supply more resilient and water efficient and less dependent on natural weather. We can shift away from subsidizing inefficient food sources in favor of higher production sources to keep up with worldwide demand.
    We should research options like orbital solar shades to cool down the equatorial regions.
    We should create seed banks and keep researching options to prevent mass extinctions in the worst case scenarios.
    We can possibly reduce coastal flooding while shrinking deserts if we engineer ways to trap/pump massive volumes of water inland.
    By the way, the Earth was warmer and more wet-tropical than present for most of its existence. The cold-dry Earth is somewhat abnormal even thought it has lasted for our species’ lifetime. We’ve accelerated a natural change and there is a lot of momentum. We need to adapt.

    • @Rnankn
      @Rnankn Před rokem

      We aren’t a we. No one has the right to destabilize the foundations of life for their own profit. If a terrorist was attacking your local utilities, and causing chaos in your food, water, housing and energy supply you would act in defense, not adapt. The only difference is order of magnitude. An attack is direct, and climate change is indirect. At least terrorists have a political ideology. Climate change is caused by privileged people unwilling to give up comfort and ease.
      And by the way, everything on earth is not evolved for another climate, it usually takes hundreds of thousands of years - not decades. And the climate won’t stop changing until we stop emissions. Adapting to a moving target is impossible. A functioning civilization in an unstable climate is not possible.
      And fossil fuels will be depleted sooner than people realize. US shale production will peak in 2024 and face sharp decline thereafter. Most major producers don’t disclose reserves, but there are signals that global production already peaked. Most known reserves are not recoverable. Which is all to say, an energy transition is inevitable, but the devastation of natural collapse is not.

    • @_Painted
      @_Painted Před rokem

      @@Rnankn It is hard to estimate how well life on Earth can adjust to warming. A warm earth is the usual climate condition, but we are returning to it at a faster pace than has ever happened before. We should be worried, but we may find that evolution has an easier time than expected due to previously adapted genetic variations still circulating in populations since the last time the Earth was warm. We can also assist species moving as they migrate to follow shifting climate regions. For example, if a species endemic to an island is threatened by warming, we may be able to save it by transferring it to another cooler region.
      If all emissions stopped today, the glaciers would still continue to melt, as we’ve already tipped past a point where the climate has already changed and we’re just seeing the effects of the change catching up. We’ve inherited the momentum of generations of change, but we can’t really blame our ancestors either because they did not know the ramifications of their development.
      Blaming climate change on “privileged individuals” might sound good to you but it doesn’t actually do good. It might slightly motivate people to help prepare for the change that is almost certainly inevitable at this point, but it likely just antagonizes and makes people defensive. As a person who already has a fairly small carbon in footprint, there isn’t very much that I can do to reduce it further without completely cutting myself off from the modern world (ie., give up all electricity usage and becoming an Amish farmer). Instead of looking for people to blame, we should work together to figure out how we can adapt.
      As you mentioned, we will probably run out of easy to access fuel soon enough anyways. We’re going to need to find solutions to these problems no matter what. I am trying to focus on finding solutions.
