    In this #masterpiecefriday edition of #thedailydoug, I'm paying tribute to legendary guitarist Jeff Beck, who sadly passed away this week at the age of 78. His tone and melodic approach to his instrument was singular, and he will be greatly missed. In the episode, we're listening to three live performances that (in my opinion) showcase his range as a musician: People Get Ready (Joss Stone), Cause We've Ended As Lovers, & Beck's Bolero (with Jimmy Page at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony). RIP Jeff Beck!

    From Tal on Facebook:
    "Jeff Beck’s light and power were so strong I was convinced we’d be goofing around and making music until the day I leave this planet.
    He was forever youthful, fueled so deeply by the muse that basic necessities were last on his list. “Are you hungry, Jeff?” “Oh no, I had a huge muffin yesterday!”
    We lost our favorite guitarist, and we also lost one of the most intelligent, intuitive, hilarious people I’ve ever met.
    Jeff, thank you for believing in me before anyone else did. You stood behind me and told everyone to take me seriously. You treated me like a daughter to the point where Wikipedia actually thought that was true.
    Actually, I did too.
    💔♥💔♥

    His hand is not just cradling the whammy bar; his fingers are constantly adjusting tone and volume controls, note by note, to achieve his effects, like striking a note and immediately truncating it's volume to make sound like it's being sucked back into the speakers. Constant tonal control. Such a unique sound. Thankk you, Jeff , for decades of wonderful guitar playing.
    RIP.

    • @FreeMTrider
      @FreeMTrider Před rokem +12

      Good point. Beck's the absolute master at sound control out of the amp. He pretty much pioneered volume swells and a bunch of other related sound control.

      I went to see him at an outdoor venue a decade or so back, and made a point of getting to the venue early so I could snag a place right up against the edge of the stage, where I knew he'd be standing. I needed to see how he did what he does, and especially how he could get these gargly flutters, using the vibrato arm. I strained my eyes, but from 20ft away I *still* couldn't figure out how he does it.

    • @mickeygoh25
      @mickeygoh25 Před rokem +8

      This is extremely difficult. That's why Jeff Beck is the guitarist.

    • @NTrails2002
      @NTrails2002 Před rokem +14

      That "warbly" effect can be explained. What he's doing is actually smacking the whammy bar with the edge of his hand. He never actually touches the strings, so the attack of those notes begins on the whammy bar, then transmitted through the hinge and springs into the strings, thereby giving it that warbly effect. I've never seen anyone else ever use that technique. But... It's just one of probably a thousand techniques that Jeff would use constantly. He loved breaking the rules, finding new ways to get new tones, and then incorporating them in his music. I miss him so much already....

    • @sdemosi
      @sdemosi Před rokem +9

      @@NTrails2002 this was the secret to Jeff. He embraced the idea of a guitar as an electrified instrument with all that implied from a young age. He was always experimenting and where others would hear an artifact of the electrical circuit, Jeff would figure out how to turn a blip, a cough of distortion, a harmonic ping into a technique thst he could apply effortlessly and fluidly at will. He crafted songs from sounds that others just wondered about. In Jeff's hands the guitar had notes & tones that others could not find.

    I used to work for Fender Guitars & spent some beautiful times with Jeff. Always incredibly gracious, present, interested, mischievous, hilarious, humble. He told me that before the Ronnie Scott’s gigs he was so nervous that the only thing he ate in 2 days was a Mars ice cream (chocolate, caramel & ice cream - suitable for vegetarians!). Also told me he’d stopped using a pick to “make playing more of a challenge & to be more closely connected to the guitar…”. Such a rare talent. Such a precious guy. He often found rapture & ecstasy in music (as well as the deep joy & happiness he got from cars & hot rods). Many of us shared those moments with him. Often onstage he was filled with light. As has often been said “There’s Jeff Beck…then there’s everyone else.” 💖🎸😢

    I managed to sneak backstage after a Jeff Beck gig back in 2013. When I met him he was drinking a glass of champagne. I asked him questions about his guitar set up and he said it would be easier to just show me, so he went and got his guitar and handed it to me to inspect, he was then called to another room so he left me standing in a room by my self holding Jeff Becks guitar. What an honor. Such a good man and hands down the best guitar player of all times. I managed to see him one last time two months ago in Atlanta and he tore it UP!

    My wife was a blues singer (had a hit in our country years ago) and she was talking about Beck earlier today. Her observation was that he sings and talks with the guitar. Saw him in a large outdoor venue in 2018, and he completely disproved the notion that you can't play soft, beautiful songs in that kind of setting without them getting lost to the noise and energy of a large crowd at a rock concert. Same with any instrument really, taking the time to learn how to get the most out of it. Like a drummer. A really good drummer, for example Carl Palmer, will know each part of his drum kit and know how to get many sounds out of each individual part of it.

    So few people in their remembrances of Jeff Beck, are posting "Where Were You?". Possibly one of the most emotionally played guitar solos of all time. Thank you Jeff beck for all those years of unique virtuosity. I've been listening to him since he began playing. Like those of greatness before him, he will be sadly missed.

    😢If Jeff admired John Mclaughlin why does only Jeff bring tears in my eyes and goosebums all over my body and soul ? Jeff and Tal ... thats as far as music can take me, or is there another whatever dimension beyond heaven ???

    His playing, as tasty & expressive as it's always been, elevated to yet another level once he ditched the guitar pick & played totally with his fingers. He had flirted with fingerstyle early on but fully committed to it in the 80's. You can hear the difference from the 70's to the 80's. It's like he found an extra gear. Most guitar players----or artists period----never find that extra gear that late in their careers.

    The entire Ronnie Scotts DVD is just spectacular. It showcases a lot of his different styles and we are lucky to have it of a document of his pure talent live. I was lucky enough to have seen him twice. First in 1976, touring after the "Wired" album came out. Then much later in 2012 (with my son). R.I.P. to a true master.

    I can listen to Tal's solo all day. Of course Jeff was a perfect example of someone whose only mode is beast mode.
    Small venues are the best for audience/performer connections, plus the conversations between instruments becomes much easier to grasp. Not that Jeff let the size of the venue dictate that aspect of his performance. Yes his guitar was the primary voice, but he made sure to have it talk with the others as opposed to over them.
    His loss will leave a massive sonic void, not to mention in our hearts. R.I.P. Jeff Beck!!
