One of the best things you said in one of your videos was by what you like. THE HOBBY IS ALIVE! Love the vids and thanks for the great content

      Nosam,
You collect what you like. Depending on your reasons to join the hobby? Personal, Financial? I don't have many high end cards but as a whole personal collection it is very valuable to me. I would suggest checking out a local card show or trade night. Go and speak with others and ask questions on how they started and eventually got higher end cards, graded slabs. Not everyone has a big bankroll to start but with smaller purchases you could eventually trade up and get one or more. There's videos out there that will help you with tips and avenues to try. Be positive and enjoy the hobby!!

Sports card Market is artificial. Flippers are ruining the hobby. Collectors are the true lifeline of the hobby. As for 2020 market, it was driven by a bunch of bored guys that convinced the hobby world at large that their old stuff in the attic had arrived. Many fell for it, others watched, many sold.
I’m still waiting she the day when i can pick up an 86 Fleer MJ in an SGC 6 at a decent price. All of them are overpriced. Thanks, Jay!

The thing that kills me being newer to the hobby is the difference in price between a PSA 10 and a 9. The fact that some employee can determine whether you make a grand or 100 dollars blows my mind.

    • @johnwayne9828
      @johnwayne9828 Před 2 měsíci

It's a scam. 99 times out of 100 you're not gonna be able to detect a difference between a 9 and a 10. At some point the hobby is gonna wake up to that and the bubble is gonna burst for grading. I was around for the junk wax era, this is no different......welcome to the junk slab era. Not to mention all the snakes in the hobby just trying to take advantage of people.

2020 I never understood why base cards were worth so much. Having gone through the over printing is early 90s taught me to but autos and numbered cards. This time around with graded cards in the mix, base will further go down due to supply and demands of today. Regardless, I still took a hit buying autos/number cards during this run. As a collector first, glad to see I can afford the HOF cards again

It’s happening all over again in 2024. There are 4 major starts in each sports and multiple in MLB. You got CJ stroud/Connor Bedard/ Wemby then Shohei and the rest. Everything will be inflated and comedown soon after. Reminds of early 90s with Lindros/Bledsoe/Shaq/Frank Thomas and Griffey .

This was a good video to remind me that my complaints in life are so petty compared to what some may be going through. That kid saying that his mom went to heaven and he now is living with grandma was rough. It definitely tugged on the heart strings. My opinion is that the sports card market is booming, but I just don’t know if it’s for the best. I feel like kids are learning about business strategy and entrepreneurship which is great. But at the same time they seem to only be looking at the money aspect and I feel like they forget that you have to do it for the love of the hobby. Dealers buy from other dealers that bought from other dealers and they give eachother “the best prices” so they can all make money every time it moves hands, but do these cards ever make it into the hands of the people that actually love these players and PC these cards?! To everyone reading this.. DONT FORGET ABOUT LOVING THE HOBBY! THATS WHAT WILL MAKE THE HOBBY LAST FOREVER!

From what I’m seeing, the market as far as pricing, maybe dipping, but interest is at an all time high. I think the pricing shifts around, from sealed, to raw, and slabbed. I think prices will begin to rise again, if we welcome new people, teach, & learn, and just be cool, and collect what we like. This is such a fun & exciting business, but can be very challenging. I guess only those true collectors, and people who are truly passionate, are always the ones that rise, or make a living out of it.

Hey man. I hear ya about people in the business with bad attitudes. More than once I’ve encountered dealers at card shows most recently the National where dealers with crappy attitudes talk to you like they’re doing you a favor just by being there. I’ve made an offer on something at a show and the dealer responds with “Are you paying my expenses for being here?” It’s like not anymore than you’re paying for mine buddy. Like you said…just get out of the business. Nobody needs that. Thanks for another good video.

In 2024, I think the hobby is in a very healthy mix. I think having affordable PSA 10 base cards is great for the younger collectors or new collectors trying to get in the hobby. If the base was not affordable for the average newcomer then it wouldn’t be an enjoyable hobby for everyone. The healthy mix also gives those with more funds to collect the bigger cards whether autos, SSP parallels, or low numbered cards. As for 2020, it was a year of inflated prices for everything, not just sports cards, so we will never see those numbers again unless the government starts giving away millions again.

When boxs were $150 for like xr nfl. $400 for spectra I could afford to take a chance but now it's ridiculous. I get there's retail but F retail. They've mass produce them an lowered the chance at anything good. Can't tell u how many time I've been ripped off by other ppl in the hobby. The sports card market in 2020 was inflated due to people being bored during covid and getting into the hobby. Now the market is in a much better place for collectors and even resellers as it is a great time to buy right now, i can see the price of cards going up in the next 1-2 years. But in perspective the hobby is on a steady increase over the last 5-10 years.

But for those in it for the right reasons, who love cards and use vending to fund their collections, it’s a great time to be in this hobby!! I can grade without waiting 7-10 business years, I can buy awesome stuff without breaking the bank, and I get to own awesome cards of my favorite players. I think that market is crazy right now, for baseball I think Topps is producing to many cards and products and watering down the value of the best players in the league. For basketball cards, all people care about is Wemby. For football cards, all people care about is Stroud. I think the 2020-21 market was bad for the hobby in the sense that it just got too pricy and kids couldn’t buy cheap cards anymore. However, grading became a huge thing and I think that was great for the hobby.

Agreed bro, hobby boxes should go down. Also, I actually feel like base rookies should go back up like they were. Why? Because that's what those of who aren't rich collectors, pull. Many of us can only afford getting retail blasters and hangers when we are living paycheck to paycheck. When investors buy up all the Megas and hobby boxes and price gouge them it's near impossible to be a part of the numbered and auto realm of collecting.
Loved, loved, loved this video! I too lost my father in February and I'm having a very, very hard time. My dad was my best friend, and we collected together back during the junk wax era and I just got back into this hobby around a year ago now. You must have had a really good dad too if you're not afraid to cry. My dad showed me how absolutely precious life is and it's most definitely worth shedding tears for. Would appreciate any and all prayers.
Much love to all of you fellow collectors.

I collected when I was young in the early 90’s. Stopped when I got to high school and got back into it a few years ago when my young son started collecting. It’s been a blast with him. I missed the 2020 year but the prices for just blasters are even too high compared to what you typically get, we will open some together just for the joy of ripping, but he mostly sticks to singles of what he collects. Keep up the great work.

Fully agree that hobby boxes are too expensive. Living in the UK and collecting baseball and basketball, I always had to pay a bit more for product than I would if I bought in the US but now, I’ve been priced out of the market, especially for basketball. Wish the boxes were back to their 2018 prices but they never will be lol.

Wow.. that’s unreal. I didn’t buy anything in 2020, but man I feel for everyone who bought in from a pure speculative investment perspective. I think like anything, you see expansion, and contraction. Right now, the sports card market is in a contraction phase, but like all things, it’ll expand, and it’ll grow once again. Maybe off topic, but thanks for being a great human being, you’re a great a role model who leads by example. Definitely love realness, and the authenticity, the world needs more of it.

I think 2020 was great for the hobby for new comers but was awful for affordability. Really tough to find hobby boxes for less than $200 like we did in the 90s or 2000s. Makes me sad. Market now is still cool. I like seeing what people go after but i am learning to appreciate what i had, which locks me back into the old market or nostalgia as some would say.

I think the card market is in a great place right now! I just bought a bowman u rookie for 50$ and he’s obviously never played a game in the nfl, the bowman sales show how great the card market is, ppl r paying so much for guys who haven’t done anything yet. 2021 was probably a little higher than we can get back to but I don’t think it’s impossible once we introduce more sports fans to sports cards

I love and hate the sports card game. Love the community and love hunting, selling, trading, collecting.
I hate how expensive it's become, the card game would b so much bigger if it was actually affordable & these companies weren't so greedy. It's making it so that some the next generation won't want to collect. It's a shame smh

The video today was great, in a "let's get deep" sense and while answering your question in the comments I also just had some late night thoughts myself (Essay for some bathroom reading or TL;DR below).
TL;DR - 2020 was wild outside looking in (wasn't a part of the hobby at that time) & 2023 to now I've experienced all sorts of things in the hobby... the great, the good, & the bad... but it's been fun and can't to see what's ahead.
Wasn't really in the sports cards in 2020 (MtG and Pokemon), but hearing the tales of cards having astronomical values for what feels like now almost no reason is wild to me.
2023 to now and as a new collector/hobby enthusiast... I have thoughts on a few different things I've noticed & experienced:
    1. Grading - used to be for collecting and preserving, but nowadays people have gotten wise to the extra value proof of condition brings and it's become a quick way to make money. Not a bad thing per say, but feels like if EVERYTHING is graded then nothing feels special unless it truly is (I.e. graded /#'d cards or Patches/Autos/etc.).
    2. "Old heads" would rather be buried with their cards than lose a dime on them in a sale. Having someone tell me or watch them with someone else and they want $200 on $100 card (based on recent comps) and the convo that ensues is still wild to me. Like to some degree I get it, but like with stocks, holding is a dangerous game if your logic is fueled by hope.
    3. I absolutely LOVE talking shop and making conversation with people on both sides of the table. A lot of my friends aren't into sports (specifically football) like I am and having shows to attend with people that share the same passion has made me happy.
    4. Whatnot. The sellers I follow/like on whatnot I REALLY like what they're about (You, Juice from KK are a few)... the vibes and streams are fun and interactive. That said, I have also run into the [bad] actors (I'm sure people know) whether it's breaking or singles that ALWAYS make it sound like you're just getting absolute STEALS on every. single. thing. they sell when often times it's the exact opposite. The way they play victim and belittle their chats and pressure them to bid/buy is disgusting. The simple answer is just not watch them (and generally speaking I don't), but at a certain point regardless if I watch or not it's that type of toxic, gaslighting behavior that will steer people away from the hobby and that's a sad thing to think about. Those bad experiences do scar people. I've seen it countless times in TCGs and other hobbies in general.
    5. The thrill of the chase is exhilarating, but dangerous. I've gambled here and there in general, but I've always loved ripping packs (like to the point where I'd become a breaker for basically free aka cost + shipping if I didn't have to pay fees/taxes). That said... BREAKS are VERY fun to be a part of... but it is gambling and can be extremely dangerous. Like with gambling, moderation is key and only gamble what you can afford to/be ok with losing. Had to remind myself of that the hard way after I joined a large amount of breaks very quickly, I definitely needed to take a step back... but I've learned from it going forward.
    6. To expand on 5 Going to shows is like Comic Con for sports enthusiasts... and I LOVED going to cons. But have a Goal and subsequently a budget and "grocery list." It's helped me for the most part... but sometimes you go to the store hungry and to spend more than you needed/wanted to. That's ok, but not something to make a habit of!
    7. The nature of sports cards collecting/trading/buying/selling has scratched the itch I've had for a long time and after coming to a realization and establishing a connection for the players/cards I wanted to collect it's become a new goal/side quest in my life - one that I enjoy very much. I'm not perfect, and have run into some hurdles and made some mistakes early on; however, it has been a fun journey and one I hope continue on.
If you made it to the end, thanks for reading haha. Time for bed! Keep doing what you do, Jay!

What i hear is about every 25-30 years, there is a boom in cards, and then it dies out. Histroy repeats itself. When i was a kid, we loved it, and it was huge, and then we became teens, and our money went elsewhere. When this young gen is tired of paying 300+ a box, it will be over again, and just the die hards will stick around. I was happy back in the day if a card was $5, and i protected it at all costs, lol. It's just a fun hobby, and if an expensive card is pulled, that's great, but it's great to pull a cool looking ohtani, imo also bc im a fan. Just sit back and enjoy the hobby.

The market has definitely had some drastic changes since the early 2000’s and even since 2020. I really like all the parallels, auto, & jerseys cards nowadays. I wish they would put a little more value toward base sets for those set collectors. I feel that is what is missing from the hobby. Stop selling completed sets and make people have to build them themselves. That in my mind would put value back into the base sets. 🤙🏼

I cannot really judge the market because its rare that I buy anything. Maybe just Miggy's but thats it. His cards have gotten way more expensive but I knew that was going to happen so it did not surprise me. I never delt with high end cards before. I always make sure any card bought on my EBay is protected. I could not even dream about sending out a card in just a penny sleeve. That is terrible way to do that. That Marichal is freaking sick !!! What a beauty of a card to have ! I am in the middle of making the 1968 Detroit Tiger team set. I have most of the big names out of the way. I was not born yet but that was my daddy's fav year for the team. Getting into thsi hobby saved my life. I came home after 1 month in the hosp and I started to collect right away. I decided to start a channel for the fun of it. I need this card hobby to stay alive and I also do this for the love of baseball !! Nice Robinson SP !! Loved todays video, thanks for sharing !!

Exclusive rights equals monopoly, fanatics, and Panini should have equal Access to the NFL. I say this because I mostly do football it could be the same for all other sports. Then they should get exclusive rights to players, not the entire league. We wouldn’t have such a water down product at that point. The hobby has price itself out of the average collectors wallet, and open the door for more breakers. Not that I have anything against breakers. It would be nice to open up my own box and not pay $900 to get $300 worth of cards. If I’m lucky.
I completely understand that there is no guaranteed profit in the secondary market, but it Has to be worth something to make sense out of spending that much money on the box.

2020 was a year where you want to make quick cash you can. As we come to 2024 it's more on you got to follow what's hot, what QB or what RC that's coming up that you can buy for "Cheap" and than make 10% or 20% as a flip! As for boxes you mention something so good the box market is so high for just what 1 player maybe 2? That's crazy that you pay $500+ for what you getting back less than $200. Honestly in the long run this helps the market more correct itself as it forces people to 1. Buy there Own PC cards, 2, there would be less demand for the items allowing younger people that can buy a hobby box or even blasters boxes for the fun of it.

The sports card market is becoming a more picky market. Not many people collecting to build sets or have personal keeps. Some say they PC them then sell it 😂. The market is more of a for profit market and people trying to really make money more then keep cards. I do believe the market is overproducing, Topps base baseball cards were at 250k in 2018 and now in 2022 and up they are producing about 1 million basecards. Base cards will start to be under valued in the hobby.
