Bob Dylan - Knockin' On Heaven's Door (LIVE FOOTAGE) [Rolling Thunder Revue, 1975]

- This is an incredible performance of one of Bob's greatest hits. He's joined by Scarlet Rivera (violin), lead guitarist Mick Ronson (just out of David Bowie's Spiders From Mars band), Rob Stoner (bass), David Mansfield (pedal steel guitar), Bob Neuwirth (guitar), Ronee Blakley (backup vocals), and drummer Howie Wyeth. Dylan's accompanied on vocals and 12-string guitar by Byrds frontman Roger McGuinn.
This footage was recorded at Harvard Square Theater in Cambridge, MA on 20 November 1975. I wanted to upload it with an overdub of the original soundboard recording, but unfortunately, the audio was blocked from CZcams due to copyright (it was officially released on "The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1975 Live Recordings" boxset). I had to overdub the most similar sounding live version of this song, which happened to be from the evening performance at New Haven Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in New Haven, CT, exactly one week prior to the Cambridge show. The audio is an audience tape, so the quality isn't great, but I decided to upload it because I thought the ghostliness of the bootleg tape paired well with the grainy, almost film-noir footage. To hear this performance with an overdub of the original soundboard recording, please refer to this compilation video I made a while back: vimeo.com/376499609.

I fell in love wi5th the rolling thunder revue when I saw them in renaldo and clara
so for the last 46 years I have enjoyed learning and playing all their songs
BUT NOW for the first time I am trying to play / replicate the violin licks which Scarlett lays down
I play a strat and I am for the first time beginning to realize how complex and intense feeling that is her musicianship
scalet's violin is pure heaven !
Did he sing sara?
@@lasttrain8843 yeah
And the way he met Scarlet! Now that’s a story.
Knockin on the scalet's violin
My favorite version of this song. Particularly love that Dylan changes the first line to “Mama wipe the blood off of my face”
blood or blue? It sounds like blue for me. Just sadness.
Mine also . They were darned near upstaged by their crazy antics.
I saw the Rolling Thunder Revue November 2, 1975, at the University of Lowell, Lowell MA. Awesome.
Live bob and roger mcguinn...saw roger set in w bob 1996 cleveland when byrds were inducted I to hall of fame
🙏❤🇩🇪☮️
That last chord Bob plays as an A minor but Roger plays it as a C. That's probably what threw me off when I learned it by ear if Roger does it the same way in the studio version even if Bob is playing A minor and it turns out G n' R played a C too (albeit a half step down). And I the video with Tom Petty from '86 Tom is playing a C also. IDK.
This of all tours this i what i wish id have seen
Me too mate would have been fantastic 😊
same here 🎶🎸🌙
Seeing Bobby live today for the first time and this is overwhelming 🤠
Are you "Bobby's" 'mommy'?! LOL, Peace
@@michaelwertzy9808 lol what the fuck
The one thing that stands out with this video is the eye contact between Roger and Bob. Also the gestures Bob gives to Roger to take the mic. Every time I see this video, you learn something new about Bob Dylan...
There is another recording of the same performance but with a different camera angle which shows more of the direct eye contact between Dylan & Mcguinn. It's hilarious & the great singing still there as well.
Dylan in 75. What can you say. Full of mystic fire, freshly infected by the Land of Enchantment. The power of a great Voice primarily is in the silence that they keep. From the stillness of the dancer, art arises. Having something to say orients itself in observation - witness. In another age, he is a prophet, a protector, too. It takes more than one lifetime to become Bob Dylan. That, in part, is how we recognise him. All human beings are God, with God. Some just kick ass at it more than others. Mahalo, Maestro Maestrissimo. I have watched you fly over the centuries, seen what you have overcome. No-one knows the critical role you have played in the survival of humanity. I do.
Bob Dylan hamming it up with Roger McGuinn. Great!
I would like to find a video of Bob singing this with Tom Petty in the early 80’s. Seen some on Pettys doc but never found a full clip. Roger is epic though.
This is the best thing I’ve ever seen
Really fantastic. Thank you so much for this video. I always enjoy hearing and seeing Bob Dylan to the utmost but having Roger McGuinn also singing and playing guitar
is like 'bringing it all back home'.
Pearls. Those that dive for them are heroes. Those that wear them belong where they came from. Great stuff this thanks x
YOU AND ROGER ARE SIMPLY THE BEST
wow, makes life worth living. Scarlett’s eyes captured my imagination. McGuinn on 12 string. And some of the lyrics on this version reflecting the early Americana and gospel traditions. Just wonderful. Happy birthday Bob Dylan.🎉
You really bring a bright light into my life... I'm forever grateful for your work brother.
What a beautiful version is this, thank you.

@Xzavier Calvin no problem =)
I always click so fast whenever I get your notifications. 😎 I know it's gonna be good. Can't ever get too much Rolling Thunder! This is great~
thanks swingin, love this version, did a good job with the overdubbed audio, the cambridge performance is probably the best of this song on the tour, or maybe ever.
Amazing work, as always Swingin'! Greetings from a young Dylan fan from The Netherlands!
I had just started teaching in the early 60’s when I went to my favorite record store and the owner played some of his early music! Fell in love with him then and have loved him since! I have had the opportunity to see him on stage! You owe it to yourself. Betty Kraft
@@bettykraft5373 what a coincidence Betty! I'm becoming an English teacher myself! I'm in my final year of my studies.
Really wish the new Blu Ray release of Rolling Thunder Revue from Scorsese added more than 3 additional performances from this tour. The footage exists, as exhibited with this video. We need a FULL RTR show on Blu Ray. We need it now!
We know they also atleast have every performance off renaldo, since what they based the movie on was a blueprint off of renaldo, who knows what else is out there
Yes man your dedication is appreciated very much, thanks

Thanks for the upload, man!!
MAESTRO DE MAESTROS.
When I listen to this, it makes me happy and sad at the same time... it's a strange feeling, but
I 💙 it!
Really good footage, thanks man
Wow Swingin’ 𓃟 Thank you!🙏🏻Such great footage and sound! This so wonderful with the lyric changes too! A real incredible moment in time! ✨🤍✨
I saw the Rolling Thunder Revue... when they came thru Wichita,Kansas with a 4 day notice.. It was amazing. I saw Mr. Dylan again in the mid 90's in Seattle at Memorial stadium when he toured with Santana... Again, a great show.
Such a great song and good archival footage. Cheers!
Thanks so much for editing and posting - a unique and unusual version of Bob's greatest masterpiece!
It's s so great!! Perfection, beautiful! Greets from Argentina.
Longa vida Dylan...🍁🎻🍁

Beautiful ! Thanks so much for posting.
Love this. Love Bob’s hat on the Rolling Thunder Revue!
I love the Arab wrap he wore 1976 too.
This is just I can’t even describe it..with a little bit of wine
Thanks for doing this. May you live long and prosper.
Awesome footage ..... 👍👍👍👍👍😎
Superb!
Must of heard this sung a 100 different ways..all epic
Feck the man is beautiful. Scarlet is beautiful too. What a combo. If I hadn’t been 12 at the time I would’ve sold everything I owned to go watch this. The violin strings tear at your heart strings. A feather in Dylan’s hat, without doubt.
We love you Swingin Pig! Thanks for all of these uploads!
Sometimes I think that you swingin', are the real Bob Dylan. I know I may be wrong but Dylan works in strange ways, so we never know. Either way, thanks for another great upload.
Come to think of it, they never seem to be in the same place at the same time...Hmmm...lol.
@@ajcarr1965 for sure, strange thing it is lol
Haha. I assure you that I am not... but sometimes wish I were. Thank you for the compliment :)

Cool to see almost everybody from the 1975 shows . There's film of an even more powerful HEAVEN 'S DOOR from the 1974 tour with The Band , tho it may not include all the verses .
Great song! Saw this live way back ...very lucky guy.
I just want to say thank you. This is so beautiful
thank you for a long time looking for this version
Long live Bob Dylan
Thank you so much for uploading this clip, i'm locking for this recording on youtube since the first time watching Roling Thunder Revue! It's amazing!
vivo e' vivo eraa una bufala di,...
KOHD is a song with an interesting backstory, with Dylan's odd performance in Sam Peckinpah's "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid". Dylan also scored the film (as a novice in that role too). The film was not well regarded at its release in '73 but it has been reevaluated over the years and is now recognized as among Peckinpah's masterworks. But it's release marked the point when Peckinpah became so antagonistic towards the studios that they (MGM) siezed control and brutally cut and mangled Peckinpah's preferred version of the film. Dylan's score, including KOHD, suffered from the hatchet-job editing. Critics snarked Dylan's score as intrusive and inept.
Peckinpah waged a long and bitter campaign against his own film and I always thought he may have unfairly associated Dylan's work with movie studio ham-handedness.
A few years after Peckinpah died, someone had the idea of restoring the director's original version and that was released on DVD and coincided with the film's rise in critical rediscovery. If I'm recalling it correctly, the restored version actually cut KOHD but certainly retained that theme and Dylan's music works beautifully, hauntingly, in the restored version. I think there have since been additional releases that are closely faithful to Peckinpah's vision and which also include KOHD.
I know Dylan's music appears frequently in movies but the filming of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid is stuff of notorious Hollywood legend, and I've often wondered what he thought about it all.
Just like so many times before
Really wish I’d gone to a live Dylan show before the pandemic
Thank you for making such great footage. So professional.
It's great to see and hear this, I haven't seen the movie yet but this is a fine extract.
Great job done!
That was one great band Bob had with him that night
Epic. Love that jangly sound. ("The spurs that jingle, jangle...") Thanks, Swingin'. Fascinatin' description too.
Oh wow!! I was at the NewHaven show! John Lennon was in the audience I think it was the first time Joni Mitchell performed on the tour. What a night. Thanks so much.
Happy birthday BOB
Oh great version
Chilling.

Hauntingly beautiful. Also, cocaine is a helluva drug.
crazy to think about how much shit i love was fueled by cocaine
Yes!!!
I shouldn't watch this before bed. McGuinn's coked out demonic face is going to haunt my dreams. 😳😳
이게 음악이다
This will be played in Bob Dylan's funeral
Bussando alle Porte del Paradiso.
A moment in time when Dylan + the World woz young
lyrics please!!!!!
Wow these lyrics are almost completely different than the original. I am a fan of the version that Bob Dylan performed with The Band in a believe was from 1973 & was released for the album Before The Flood. Do you have footage from that version of the song?
Why is this song so much better with a simple violin??
Because Scarlet played the violin 😉
CLASSIC... Ronson, and Dylan..? Scarlet..? The whole Revue..? Can't believe I left it as long as I did, kinda like sex, been a while, and here I am saying THANK YOU, THANK YOU... I'm 'IN' Heaven.
