I changed my tensioner on my 2000 Malibu 3100 sfi with just a ratchet and a 15 mm socket in 15 min. I didn't need to move anything. It will come out and go in with a little wiggle by the fire wall. Just pull up on the belt and loop on altenator pulley and your done. This guy is used to moving "everything" out of the way so he can up charge his labor.
Fuck that, just undo the evap hose (fat hose connected to fat aluminum line, and wham in & out in under 20 minutes.
If the belt is squealing it could be the tensioner or you may need a new belt.
You may want to take a like at it with the car running to see if it's moving around at all or looks like it's loose.
THANK YOU!!!! Me (31 F) and my 65 year old mother just replaced my belt. Your video was a lifesaver!!! :)
Thanks I'm doing this job today. 🙌
What torque is recommended for the tensioner bolt?
Thanks so much!!! I followed your instructions step by step and it was as easy as you made it look, big weight off my shoulders. I worried about taking the motor mount off. Glad I seen this video, definately saved me some cash. The instructions for the installation of the tensioner said you might have to remove the fender well and wheel assembly!!! (Yeah, ok...) Thanks for the video, I really appreciate it!!!
Thanks for posting these videos
Changing a starter on a 2001 malibu hope it all goes well with it
Really helped me, that is what I was searching for.

You should be able to if the belt's out of the way of the tensioner.
Helpful, thanks

You will want to replace the entire part and not just the pulley. Normally if the pulley has some play, the spring on the tensioner most likely has lost a lot of its spring and could fail.
I'm replacing the camshaft sensor and a crankshaft sensor any ideas or tips or anything
The hole for the bolt on my car is stripped, any tips?
You do NOT need to take out the engine mount, or raise the engine to do this. Simply release the tension from the belt at the alternator, gently lay aside remove the idler pulley, place the belt back on the alternator, remove the tensioner pulley, replace both the tensioner, and idler pulley, pull up the new tensioner and slide the belt back on the idler pulley. Your good to go in about 25 minutes max! This type of over kill is why automotive shops wan to charge 2 hours labor. Work smart, not hard!
That big box next to the hoses you pulled also comes of really easy, has like snap thing and thats it, it really helps getting it out of the way.
That's the governor box for the cruise control.
The safest way to do it is with a chain fall. There may be a couple of loops or hooks on the motor to attach the chains too. You would also need to loosen or remove the bolts from the motor mounts. It can be a little involved to do it the correct way. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Will one of these cause my power steering pulley to squeal and click and make a rattling sound. I changed the belt a few months ago. Thought it was just the belt since it used to just squeal once i change the belt the sound stopped. And after 2 months its now it's making a loud squeal when I accelerate. If I spritz the belt with a drop of silicone spray it stops for a bit or a day. but then starts back up with the noises. As in the squeal returns and then i start hearing a click/rattle sound from the power stering pump pulley area.. also noticed when I stop the car from time to time I seem my dash lights seem to dim give the car a little tap on the gas and they brighten back up. Had the alternator checked twice it was fine same with battery..... not sure what's going on and don't wanna go changing out parts if I don't habe to trying to save some $$$
I have a '98 2.4. I was wondering if I can just replace the pulley on the tensioner? everything looks good. just the tensioner pulley has a little play.
same here when engine is cold i hear squealing when accelerating but when engine is warm the noise is gone
Could you please do a video on taking off the front bumper.
i can put one up for you if you haven't figured it out yet
The belt tensioner may be loosing some of it's tension which could be why the belt is slipping. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Did you put an OEM pulley in or aftermarket?
+InvestorGuy66 The link to the tensioner we sell on our website is aftermarket.
I had a screeching noise for several months before the belt broke. I didn't fix it because I didn't know how. With this video I was able to replace it, although I had to also remove the engine mount bracket as well. Now it throws the belt off as soon as I start the car. Would a bad tensioner cause that? The noise got REALLY loud before the belt broke and it's still loud even with a new belt. All the pulleys spin freely, but the tensioner pulley has a little bit of play.
+RedCloud58 We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
I'd replace the belt tensioner pulley assembly, not just the pulley itself.
Thank you. I did not have to remove the engine mount.
Chad Harings how you get the belt off without doing that step
Chad Harings Did you replace the belt, too?if you're replacing the belt, the mount is in the way. You can't get the belt through all the pullies with it in.
@@screminmemes yeah I didn't understand why he took the mount off but then realized it's because they were putting a belt on if the belt looks good then I guess you don't have to take anything at all
Why does it always look like you are working with brand new bolts that are not rusted or cross threaded? Every car I work on seems to have every bolt seized or hopelessly stuck 🤣
I hear a high pitch squeal especially when my car is cold. It is coming from tensioner/alternator area could this be the problem.
You dont really need to jack the engine..you just need a serp belt tool and a 15mm socket and when you put it back on..the top bolt just needa be 37lbs or just changing the pulley it be 18lbs
No, you don't need to, but having the motor mount out of the way makes it a lot easier...and it's not hard to take out.
Dear 1A Auto Experts,
How do you jack up the engine? Frankly, my top fear is damaging my oil pan if I jack it up.
I just did this job, and it seems my answer is 4 years too late but you put the jack under the ribbed part of the engine. Not the smooth section. It's right behind the frame of the car.
This is my dear as well. My father has been an ASE Certified mechanic his entire life and this I KNOW is a BIG no no. If you jack your engine from the oil pan you're more than likely gonna put a hole in it. So therefore, since my father is 3 states away and cannot help me with this I'm left to do it on my own and need SAFE advice on where to jack up the engine
What I do is put a piece of plywood on the jack claw, line it up with the oil pan, then jack it. The plywood will give the oil pan a flat surface to sit on and distribute the weight more evenly so you don't have all the engine weight pushing down on the oil pan while it's in direct contact with (and sitting squarely on) the jack claw. I'm surprised this video didn't say to do that. To me, that's just common sense.
If you going to take off a Mount, belt and tensioner go ahead and replace the other idler pulley and the motor mount and belt.😞 Check alt and waterpump by hand. be good to go for a while
+Andrew Jones Thanks for checking us out. That is good advice for overall maintenance of the vehicle! 1AAuto.com
Why remove the fan belt? Seems unnecessary
To replace the belt, or check the pulleys for alignment, play, bearing wear, or contamination. You can't do that with the belt on them.
You don't need to do anything to make sure the belt is adjusted to the proper amount of tension?
jawaroogambian ,this car has a self tensioner on it. You pull the bar back and it releases the tension and when you let it go, it puts the tension back on.
Stupid design having the motor mount in the middle of everything
This is incorrect for a 1997 Malibu
