I always loved how detailed and accurate Athearn models are.
I don't really model UP but I stumbled upon one of these at a hobby shop on vacation and was blown away and just had to have it - Now I have UP 9916 on my roster!
Nice review. I know what you're saying. I come here from O Scale and our speakers are larger but the board is the same. So I must conclude that the speaker size is a big factor. Amazing how the competition in HO is making these models so great. Atlas, Rapido, Athearn, Scale Trains, BLI are all trying to beat the other guys' brains in. Wish we had that in O Scale.

These look sweet! Coming from the Bay Area, I see them running up and down the peninsula corridor all the time. I'm glad these unique locomotives finally get a run in Athearn Genesis 2.0 fashion.
yep they are mostly out that way, but very nice locos!
These are fricking sick man, there a modern UP engine which is perfect for modeling the modern era of diesels , so glad you did a review on them
Great review. I appreciate your honest assessment of the decoders. I have always enjoyed my Athearn engines, but after running decoders with capacitors (BLI, TCS). Really hard to go back to one without it.
I agree. It would be nice for them to have capacitors by now.

They finally put lit number boards on their at least this model. Hopefully they do it on SD70's an 60's?? I don't understand how they put lit number boards on the dash 9's but didn't on the ES44AC/DC??

He did a review on Athearn's 2020 release of the SD90MAC-H Phase 1 locomotive about 2-1/2 to 3 years ago. You can search his channel for the 📸 video. He may do another on the current release from Athearn. My back order was delivered to me in September. I placed my order January 2022 😂😂😂😂😂

I've seen your video of the initial release Athearn put out in 2020... I'm not sure if there's much of a difference between the two release of this locomotive, but U.P. modelers like myself would like to know...

No they do not, power went off the second they were pulled from track

It will only work on mth dcc locomotives in HO scale. If you have the dcs commander you can use some locos in dc
The SD59 is my favorite loco UP has. They use them mostly in Nor Cal for local service. Compared to an SD40N they are much cleaner and more fuel efficient and have better tractive effort. I hope UP rebuilds more SD60’s into these.
$350? These things are getting expensive. Nice models nonetheless
