god, Mr. Clarke add so much layers to an already intense character. This performance is quite out of the ordinary but god-damn I find myself going back to listen everyday. Quite emotional. I think he would also be phenomenal as the Phantom.
I saw him perform last Saturday and I've watched this video about 20 times since. I have seen Les Mis so many times over the years, but he is truly the best Javert I have ever seen. The entire cast was incredible, but he absolutely stole the show.
I went to see it yesterday and I feel like im still trapped at the seat of Sondheim theater, in awe by his performance (and the rest of the cast), it was such an impactfull experience... I dont think i'll ever be the same.
Exactly my feelings... Can't believe it's already been a week since I've seen him live. It left me feeling so starved of whatever I felt during the performance, I went to watch it again the next day, hoping for the cast to stay the same. I was only disappointed in three points, but the one that hit me the hardest was that Stew didn't perform (no front to Simon Pollard though, he was amazing too). I don't know what Les Mis did to me, but I never knew I needed a live performance of it until last Wednesday. I have since listened to the soundtrack on loop for literally most of the day, it's incredible what kind of hold it has over me. I listen to it in the evening while falling asleep, while driving anywhere, while riding the bus, while cleaning, while writing this comment. But the voice of Stew's Javert... There's something in it that that stirs my heart, it draws something out that usually only wakes when I'm in my favorite places, like London, Barcelona or Munich. Also it reminds me always of the time I spent in London last week in general, and I think about it every hour of every day. The day we left, three in the morning, walking down the street to the nearest bus stop to take it to the nearest train station to ride until Heathrow, all of us cold and tired? I put on my headphones and I let Les Mis and Stewart Clarke take me back to the place I was about to leave. Strange how music, sometimes the voice of one person together with it, can make you travel the longest distances without ever lifting a foot. It comforts me. ❤ (Hope I haven't been yapping for too long, sorry... I yap about the things I'm passionate about)
WAIT, WE'RE EXACTLY IN THE SAME SITUATION, really, I've been hearing it on loop, put no Javert slaps as hard as Stewart Clarke. Im soooo desperate to find a bootleg with him in it or going back to London to see him again.... That man is incredible

After the show it was nothing but praises that flew out of our mouths and we all agreed that the actor/singer who played Javert had a really strong and amazing voice. Later, I discovered it was you who played Javert (I bought the books they were selling that show who is playing which character) and, since then, I have been watching the videos you post here! what was used for the ending when he was falling to his death? when I went on May 9th he jumped forward off the bridge and then walked backwards but it didn't look like it here. But amazing Javert and performance.
oh dear, sounds like when you went it wasn’t working and he had to do that instead, but I think he has a harness and a pole comes up behind him and attaches, so he looks like he is floating, and he swings his arms to look like he’s falling. too bad you didn’t get to experience that, it’s really cool, and looks better in person than in this video.

What really blew my mind when I saw it is when Javert stands up on the bridge, and then it rises up behind him, and he gets pulled backwards. Just the fact that he is on the bridge, and it flies back behind him is really cool.
okay in every les mis i've seen the jumping effect is really just javert standing on the ground and the bridge going up but now he's floating and actually looks like he's falling this is genie lou the only recording i can find of this effect is this new? someone pls tell me
Yes it’s relatively new, I’ve seen it done in one recording before though, can’t remember which one. I saw it the other day live and it’s really like magic how they connect him to the strings that lift him up, I tried really hard to see how its done but I couldn’t see anyone come behind him but I assume it’s done when he is bent over the bridge in “how can I now allow this man…” it’s really brilliantly done!
I think this effect was added around 2014 - there is (or was) a video somewhere of Tam Mutu with this jump into mid-air. I have attended a tech talk where we were shown how this is done (look away now if you don't want to know). Javert wears a harness around his waist which protrudes from the back of his coat - note how careful he is to face front all through this scene. As he stands on the bridge, a small truck comes forward from the back of the stage, with a remote controlled spike which hooks into the harness. When he feels the harness engaging with the spike, he spreads his arms wide as a signal that all is OK. At the crucial moment, he jumps, the front part of the bridge flies apart and the back part rises into the flies, and the truck carries him backwards out of sight. If anything goes wrong (e.g. if the truck jams on its way downstage) he is notified by a cue light at the front of the stage. He then has to implement Plan B - jump off the bridge and get offstage fast.

Saw him in London March 2024. Perhaps my favorite Javert having seen this show over 10 times since 1995. He freakin' rocked.
