A lot of people say City didn't care for this trophy but if you observe Pep celebration when Palmer scored he almost break his back out of excitement. Pep wanted this title which would put him at 4 in a season and closer to his Barcelona achievement which is 6 in one year. Keep in mind he still has Club World Cup to play.
How they will not care if this trophy was a must for the sixtuple?
And super cup
With super cup and club wc it can be a 5tuple
Pep wanted to beat us so city can keep that mental block against us he knew if we won then these arsenal players would have the confidence to think they can go toe to toe with city
Wrong, because community shield is part of the next season, it's the first trophy of the 23/24 season. So he wouldn't be adding to last year's trophies
Top analysis. I think it was brilliant approach by Arsenal to keep their shape and not open spaces for City. They were patient for most part of the game and it worked.
yea it worked....a lucky deflection goal
@@mebarkiimad4575 Luck is part of the game mate

Jurrien Timber was absolutely incredible today. Quick, strong, incredible ball control and composure, the guy could easily play in midfield. Saliba also imperious as usual, pocketed haaland for the 65 minutes he was on the pitch. Thought rice actually played quite well i dont understand the flack he's getting from certain pudits, he made some fantastic recoveries and overall made us more defensively sound in transition. Overall promising signs. looking forward to the forest game on saturday now, hopefully 3 points to kick off the new premier league season, COYG.

great analysis and animation. no idea why you can't have this on TV instead of roy keane saying "he's gotta score that". akanji and walker seemed like they were not 100% sharp.
Well duh, it's not like they take notes and rewatch the entire match.
ødegard was a constant sourcve of trouble for city. Barring the middle was arteta´s trick. Both teams eqaully hungry. very god game. colder nerves perservered.
I think Martin Ødegaard is the 2nd best creative playmaker in EPL after KDB. He surely needs a little more improvement when it comes to finishing. But man! Ødegaard can create something out of nothing. His through balls were inch perfect in this match. And he wasn't even at his usual best. If only Arsenal had a proper CF, I think he would have delivered quality crosses.
I think thats what city got killed in the end when they conceded the last goal...they were congested defensively in the middle leading to lack of communication

Thanks for the excellent analysis. I want to add that one other difference was a single player - Timber - who caused City so many problems down the left. Of the 34 big summer bys, so far Timber is an absolute standout.
Both teams were defensive tanks with both goals coming from unlikely chances.

Arteta did his homework
I think with Rice instead of Xhaka the double pivot was more secure. Kovacic is still finding his feet. He has some bad habits but there’s no doubt he’s quality.
Buying Gvardiol was important to make sure Grealish gets the ball optimally.
Havertz needs to become more ruthless

You didn't mention Foden here, his amazing turn inside city's half and then feeding the ball upwards was the reason city got to score that goal
Timber out is also the reason, city managed to score

7:07 Rice actually went to the middle of the 3 more often than going to left back. Gabriel at times was so far wide left.
Coz Rice has experience playing as a Center back.
Going back to a traditional build up play methodology. Dm drops, Ziny inverts and Partey holds

DK why Pep abandoned his 3-2-4-1 from last season. That system worked wonders for City. If he thought Kovacic couldn't do the Gundo role in the 3-2-4-1 he could have tried Foden in his place .
KDB is crucial in that 3-2-4-1

Great breakdown of the strategy to player strengths etc! Loved the simple 2D mappings. Thank you. Are you going to do this for all of Arsenal's games this season? That would be awesome! I can't remember last time I subscribed or commented on a video.
Two brilliant technical minds; two brilliant football managers. Geniuses in fact. 👏👏👏👏
City played nice but looked to be missing something, Gundogan who has that know how to open up teams. You can't buy that experience big loss for City also Mahrez Silva leaving has left them looking a bit weaker.
Silva has not yet left City.
Kovacic cant really build up to the box

@@thuo1000Wrong, Kova is good with the ball but Pep has made it clear that he prefers using Julian as a number 10 and 8 than him. But even he isn't very good at it. They'll probably get more midfield or wingers, Pep is too smart to not know that.

Great video 🤙, what is the name of the program you use with the formations?👊
The free position role played by Bernado in the second half, you could see him with the Diaz and the next minute with the Alvarez. Any one noticed that????? . Usually Pep employs this when the opponent time has maintained formation and are pressing really good. Bernado is a good ball carrier, a dribbler and doesnt lose the ball cheaply. He can take on opponents and tend to attract them, freeing some of his teammates. I would like to see him try it with Foden.
It didn't work Those youngers arsenal squads were too good he was silenced by timber

Odegard was... no words. COYG!!!
Arsenal deserved to be two nill up in the first half and it was game over as it was tactical battle but again it should have been 0-0 to penalties. Foden just passed Thomas who was booked out of nothing in the first half while Rodri never got the card for his fouls through a 100 minutes 😅. When Trossard scored his deflection, All City players were in goal defending 😂. Arsenal deserved the win.

Incredible piece mate. Love coming on here to get your opinions 👍👍👍
Thanks to your analysis and complementary visual aids, it becomes clear to me the impact that gvardiol with his abilities would have had on a game like this one. Your analysis also helps me understand how forward-thinking Pep’s vision of the game is.
He would do nothing special wait you will see
Nice content as always
interesting analysis but didn’t take note of Arsenal’s ability to go long to Havertz who’s hold up play in the first half was tops
well done, can't wait to see more Arteta =)
The much vaunted Man City tactical play was met,as so ably dissected here,by an equally effective and stifling Arsenal act that prevailed through sheer grit and execution! Witness Haaland:lonesome isolation and Rodri enforced bully lunges!
this is a really good analysis! thanks a lot!
I feel we were lucky but I will take it. We had a lot of unlucky times in the past.
Could you please analyse our striker options and what might work against different oppositions? My intuition is that Jesus is first choice in any situation when he's fit but is that rly true? And when he is out, does havertz rly provide so much more than an in form trossard? I've sort of given up on Eddie - it feels like there's always a better option. Is that fair? Interested to hear your thoughts
Please tell me this tactics app used in this video!!
Good analysis
Summary, pep was happy to try new things to actually get what arteta is driving at, both of them are great overthinkers but pep knew he has better things to look forward to rather than a community shield, what arsenal are planning for this season is huge, coming from a football analyst myself
Do you think Pep is going to do his 3 2 4 1 formation again, with Gvardiol instead of Ake and Kovachich or Foden instead of Gundogan
@@louis-nz8ce yes, but im suspecting de bruyne to play more higher and central role this season, a more diamond midlfield with stones and kovacic supprting wide, more like what he did in the ucl final
Haaland link up game is weak and I think most team will want to explore this, allow him receive long and then press him with numbers, I feel de bruyne will play more of a traditional 10 this season
But pep overthinks and you can never guess what's in that bald head😂

4:42 “Saka doesn’t have natural defensive instinct” as if he wasn’t playing as a left back for us in his breakout season. Yes he’s a winger but his defensive ability is still shown there!
Good analysis but a reminder saka was initially a full back a

Great analysis
I'm impressed. Excellent analysis
Really appreciate video fragments
My best player in the city shirt is Phil Foden..he changed the game completely
after introduction and usage of boxes last season by Di Zerbi , 4-4-2 is having something of a come back I Think
I think pep should have played kdb in the first Half. And kovaic in the subs cause he really knows how to see spaces in between the match
The introduction of Foden and De Bruyne for Haaland and Grealish, with Alvarez moving up top was the critical moment that almost won City the game today.
Understood how and when to look to receive in the half spaces mesmerisingly, and played some outrageous passes.
Before that, Guardiola's side had been attempting to overcommit the Arsenal press in an attempt to isolate Haaland up front but to little effect, with Saliba and Gabriel able to maintain constant pressure throughout, and with Havertz and Odegaard angling in runs to make the initial pass from Ortega or Stones risky, with an immediate regain possible or the threat of leaving the City build stranded in one half of the pitch with no switched outball available.
Also worth noting the role of Havertz when Arsenal were in possession - to pin Stones in the early build before darting centrally and between the lines once the City press was engaged, and one of Timber or Partey (usually) were free to play a progressive pass centrally. Arsenal looked very dangerous in those moments, and Havertz' 2 shots on target in the first half were both real breakthroughs against a very sturdy set defence full of huge duel winning machines
I was just gonna say: Havertz wasn’t meant to be the main goal threat; Arteta wanted his size to replicate Giroud’s role of the hold up man. In any other game, Havertz is a winger or CAM
@@khaliquet1you spot it correctly. Havertz's purchase was more on a tactical basis rather than just scoring goals. His ability to execute Arteta's plan is what Arteta wanted in him. Ppl misunderstood his role.
Guardiola mimicking what a time to be alive
Pep: What a time to be alive!
Citizens: We just lost the Community Shield.
Pep: What an awful time to be alive!
Well done Arteta, for matching up pep.👍👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Before done deal, I had said Rice is the perfect replacement of our big brother Xhaka, he is the upgrade version and he can still upgrade more. Just a little bit movement. you can see different Arsenal.
You earned subscriber! COYG
Timber's runs into the opposition box reminded me of Cancelo
Why don't you have manager rating?
It was a great match from both teams. It felt robotic & automatic. If anyone wants a proper tactical battle, this is a go to match. The game was 50-50 in my opinion.
Just like how man city vs Liverpool used to be before Liverpool became much worse
@@aminepro8978 You dig.
The analysis is good but the game was set-up to be played like a friendly. City didn't attempt to get out of first gear in the first half. Haaland wasn't on the pitch when KDB and Foden were so didn't get any service. City were happy to allow Rodri to be outnumbered in midfield and he still did well. And I'm pretty sure if he has a new idea for maneuvering the formation around to keep the play fresh, Pep wasn't going to waste it by showing it in this game. In any event we'll soon see. Arsenal are very wound up and seem ready to go so they may have a fast start. Chances are the season will catch up with them again but the squad is so large they have plenty of players to rotate - though that doesn't always work so well. City will be using more youngsters this year and it will be interesting to see how they go on.
He didn't do well .. if you find yourself grabbing players around the body and not getting carded for it I guess you did well.. but in all honesty he should have had a yellow multiple times and it was high risk high reward fouling that kept him relevant
And they certainly did all the commentary was about how city dominated the first 20 minutes and arsenal couldn't get a touch on the ball (is that supposed to be a second gear City?😂)
My guy didn't do managerial tactical scores😢 . Really like them by the way
The choice to not press the keeper proved to be crucial. Turns out, marking Rodri and Kovacic out of the game was as the key to largely shutting down their chances.
Arsenal also went long to Havertz. He held up play at times, won his serial duels and 2nd balls which also helped arsenal progress up the pitch
Foden made us look dangerous, his turn on partey freed up a lot of space in the centre and it eventually led up to the goal, beautiful finish from palmer and arsenal look dangerous, this season will be beautiful 🔥🔥🔥come on city💙
Lol because partey was on yellow card he wouldn't pass by partey
@@jumasalehe6665 ya sure but I'm talking about the turn and if he was on a yellow, he should have done a better job at defending and not allowing foden to pull him out of position
This is very insightful. However, Pep was not beaten by Arteta's tactics. They drew the game
I dont agree on 5:34 if rice marked palmer and partey on kdb odegaard and havert can either pres city cb while covering their shadows or stay at city double pivot and let their cb have the ball without any progression as city strength relay in midfield or arsenal wingers could tuck in and mark city double pivot while odegaard and havert press city cb if they go to their goalie they shouldn't press him let him have the ball.
In a nutshell : Pep vs his tendency to overthink
What's interesting is Haaland would mostly struggle when playing against top table oppositions or teams that sit deep. Last season in EPL, his records vs Top 6 are not very convincing.
great
Saka isnt so bad at defending, he used to be a LB remember
Arsenal tactical strategy was spot on . Actually Guardiola choice of Kovacecic and Rodri as double. Pivots showed that he respected Arsenal technically better on the ball. This season is going to be much harder for Manchester City. ARSENAL WILL WIN THE PREMIER LEAGUE TROPHY because of the style of football they possess and slipt from their grasp last season.
Arsenal is still not direct enough they play this kind style so that they dont have to play like previous match, direct football means straight score at instant moment and later on sit back and dictate the game by possession and passing to look more opportunities
It depends on the opponent. They were able to railroad Barca playing the type of football you mentioned, but doing that against City is suicidal and vice-versa.
KDB made assist but miss penalty. I don't know how to feel about that
City really miss Gundogan and De Bruyne in the First Half, Kovacic is good but still need time to be able get used to how city play, Alvarez don’t have the creativity and vision in him (still need to improve if he want to play in CM or CAM). Second Half with de Bruyne come in city play better but still they don’t have good winger like Mahrez in the Right because Silva is played deeper because Kovacic cannot fill Gundogan shoes in the Midfield. However Arteta really proof he still just started, if they stay consistent i think they have a chance to win more trophy. In the end tho Arsenal really take the winning mentality with them with the last minute goal and they prove it in the Penalty shootout.
Grealish was not a happy man yesterday. He played very wide and didn’t get much of the ball. When he did, he was closed down quickly. City weren’t a threat down their left side and attacked Timber most of the time.
I love pep but the way he stifles Grealish is criminal
He was also in Ben White's pocket.
It was an interesting tactical battle. However at times Arsenal failed to properly play out from the back and opted for a long ball, which in many cases gave possession to City. I think for building from the back is vital and Rams should be pivotal here. He should move up the pitch to become a third centre back of sorts between Gabriel and Saliba which would then create more passing option in the wings and also overloads again City in the mid-field. That way it would be easy to clear the City press with ease and move the ball up the pitch with control either through the mid of on the wings.
Secondly, his distribution must get better especially on the long balls. For example if Arsenal were pressed, Rams long ball to either the wing or a dropping centre forward in Eddie or Jesus would break the lines and Arsenal would be in on goal. So I think his long ball distribution must improve.
Otherwise thanks for the great analysis.
Thats why Arsenal are looking for another keeper. Ramsdale has that championship mentality of kicking long balls for no reason. He panics alot that he doesnt even want to make a simple pass and instead opts for long kicks. That guy is not a ball playing keeper
football dont have to be played from the back all the times, thats why arteta looking for a new goalie, David Raya
Nice video, but I see this more of a positional analysis than tactical. Still interesting.
first time i saw a goal on extra 10th minute but added time was 8? am i missing anything?
There was an injury at that additional time. 5 mins wasted
Absolute miss by Foden and last desperate shot by Trossard.😅
And you think Arsenal didn't have good chances too??? Had Havertz scored the two clear cut chances you wouldn't been talking
MR, ARTETA is the best..to winner good joob 🏆🏆🏆👍👍👍🏆🏆💪💪💪
The new signings adapt to Arteta's style much faster than Pep's tiki taka style. That's old style now. That's the reason without a proper striker Arsenal almost won the league and that's also the reason why Arteta has been preparing to solidify the midfield.
When city win the league, I will come back and remind you of this comment
Dude It's Just the extra time!
Odegard finally has a trophy in his career when he get loan from real Madrid this matches has been over added additional time to 90+11 but no wonder why it has no extra time
Always learn a lot from these videos - love the explanation and analysis and makes rewatching the match a lot more interesting.
The way these two teams use space is making me think they're at least a step ahead of the rest of the premiership so far - definitely shows why Arteta wanted the three major acquisitions he got this summer as they're almost key to getting it to work.
As an Arsenal fan I can tell you exactly how Arteta beat Pep in one word: Luck.
😂😂
How come Pep didnt play Stones as a cdm?
probably because Kovacic doesn't do Gundogan's role, which is to act almost as a second striker
When doing man marking teams don't usually manmark defenders which gives Stones license to roam. But if you watched yesterday Havertz was manmarking Stones denying him that freedom. The only two City players Arsenal didn't mark were Dias and the goalkeeper.

Good analysis, and points well made.
As you say, KdB was the difference. It seems as though Arsenals press was effective because Alvarez is a bit of a passenger in midfield. Once the line up was changed so that he was effectively replaced in there by KdB, City became far more dangerous, and ultimately scored what looked like it would have been the winning goal
