Some good books ive read around this topic are The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression by Amity Shlaes, Coolidge by Amity Shlaes, The Great Crash of 1929 by John Kenneth Galbraith
Hoover was a bit of an idealist but also quite pragamatic, reading a good book on him as well Hoover: An Extraordinary Life in Extraordinary Times
by Ken Whyte. Hoover did do a lot of good in terms of relief in Belgium and post World War 1. But he wasn't a good president, often near the mid or bottom of the table of lists. Coolidge is a good president.
