Maybe this is what The Ukraine is thinking. Not sure.
When you look at The American Civil War, the one big lesson about war that I see is that strategy matters more than tactics. Grant and Sherman really thought strategically. Sherman's march was about stripping the Confederacy of supplies. Grant saw that the Union needed to pin down Lee. Grant and Sherman are thought of by many as lesser tactically, not something I claim, but strategically they were excellent.
Please note that logistics are not something I think as secondary either.

It’s too early to tell whether this offensive will have strategic significance in the war, but here are a few potential effects:
    1. Russia must now more seriously defend its border with Ukraine. Before, there was an asymmetry where Ukraine had to fortify their side but Russia didn’t.
    2. Ukraine’s morale has been boosted.
    3. Ukraine have shown that the West’s fear of escalation was partly unfounded, and now the restrictions on Western weapons has been further eroded.
    4. Ukraine has exploited Russia’s inability to adapt to dynamic warfare, particularly in places that had no military logistical support previously. This was also displayed during Prighozin’s march on Moscow, where there was no response from Russia’s military.
    5. Russia will eventually need to divert resources from other combat areas.
    6. Russia will be forced to retake the Kursk territory occupied by Ukraine. This may cause Russia to continue attacking longer than the natural culmination of their Summer advances in the East. Attacking causes more attrition than defending in this war. This may cause further strain on Russia’s military.

I feel that there's a whole slew of variables that are missing that we currently do not know about. Particularly, enlistment rates of draftees, rotations of troops on and off the line, as well as the ability for experienced units to retain key knowledge in the heat of battles to lessen the likeliness of a rout or being overwhelmed.
