    Gotta love my little MacBook Air M2 8gb. I got it for ‘lazy development’ AKA laying in a hammock while working, and it ended up being my primary use. Love that lil guy.

    Can you try with 8 cores?
    Maybe it uses the efficiency instead of the performance cores.

    What are the ssd sizes of each machine? The slowness of the 3rd machine can be caused by the single nand issue…

    Could it be that you are starving the host? If you over allocate resources to any processes you can end up hurting performance because other processes are starved.

    Who would of thunk it? If you spin up 100 plus containers, memory might be an issue. On the other hand that little 8 GB machine does pretty well if you are using it for development (as does my base model M1).

    I like your movies. Will be great, that when you are revealing times for machines, you will left already revealed ones on screen. So there will be incrementing number of times but it will allow to easyly compare them without need to rewid footage.

    That's an informative video. Consider that currently the 16" M1 Max with base spec and 16" M2 Pro with base spec, what do you think would be a better value to buy?

    Dear Alex. Great video as always. I ask you the following. Is there too much difference between a macbook pro 16in m1 max 32gbram 1tb HD versus a m2 pro 14in with 32gb ram and 1 tbyte hard drive? I live abroad and only can buy in here the M1max. For the m2pro I would have to wait 2 or 3 months. I edit 4K video and do music production (classical music(not so demanding)). If there is not so much difference I would go for the Max. Thank you very much for your help!

      Yeah I think the Max is fine. And I hear the speakers sound better on the 16” Max so that will probably help you put

    Could it be, that the M2 Pro machine has the one NAND package instead of the twin packages on the other machines? This would be a suitable explanation why it does need more time for certain tasks because auf storage speed limitations..

      M1 and M2 airs are incredible dev machines, I have a 24 core, 64 gb ram beast of a desktop pc, but end up doing almost all my dev work on my m1 mba since for most tasks it’s just as fast and practical to not have to switch.
      To hook it up to screen and all peripherals + power at home is just 1 cable.
      Battery life is incredible and it’s super light and portable.

      @@ummnine6938 I’ve got the 16GB ram model, max specs except for harddrive space.
      I do mostly web dev, with vscode for ide. The tool chain is mainly nodejs and docker. I’ve also done a decent amount of rust and some dotnet development with it.
      At my job I work with some large Angular mono repos which will spin up a dozen or so servers on a local serve and it hardly breaks a sweat.
      Not currently considering upgrading since I’m happy with the one I have currently have.
      The only time it really struggles compared to higher tier models / my desktop is in long running heavily multithreaded tasks (such as executing all integration tests in a large monorepo, but you almost never want / have to do that)

      ​@@abhayrohitthis ssd will never last 7 years or plus. 5 at maximum. 64gb only for lumien or machine learning. 32 gb It's perfecr for every use, but you should consider that the ram space is utilized by both cpu and gpu, so... if you on your desktop or previous laptop used 16gb of ram goes for 32gb, if you you used 32gb goes for 64gb.

      I prefer the Max Version, with 32 GB of minimum, since you need to upgrade the whole machine if you want to upgrade your RAM for future needs.

    Hey Alex, could you test Xcode launch time on an M1 Max after a cold boot? On my Mac Studio it takes over 10 seconds, yet on my old MacBookPro late 2014 I7 it's almost instantaneous. Just wondering if it's just my install?

      You should check if it’s launching Xcode with Rosetta. It’s much slower for me to launch it with Rosetta than natively.

    I love Docker. Using it on an Arch Linux box dedicated to Docker. The one thing I dislike though, is the creation and eventually erasure of containers. So much writing to the SSDs.

    for web development I would say that today is better to have your dev/env on the cloud and buy yourself 2 macbook air 15" instead of a macbook pro. you keep one macbook pro as a backup, if you have issues with the main one, you send it for repair and you switch to the backup, but your dev projects remain on the cloud so there is no issue to wait for a repair in the mac store. Well, of course if you are working as an independent contractor.
    maybe the macbook pro is good if you wanna use it to develop stuff for iphone/ipad/iwatch/imask

    thank you for the video! is there a chance for the follow up with some details on the m2 pro fail? With different amount of ram or just to try to understand the roor cause? I was planning to buy m2 pro 32gb, but now... maybe it's better to go with the max one

      @@AZisk Can you do the tests again with 1 CPU and 4GB of ram? Just start with single core performace per machine, then you can increase the cpu to 4 in 3 iteration while checking the performance.
      Also clean your docker images cache , images , container and volumes while starting with the latest version of the test repository :D. I think we should see where Air and Pro Max tend to excel

      @@AZisk well, 16 gb is pretty much the lower end of any acceptable config for development. My bet is that with 32 gigs M2 Pro should almost as fast as M1/M2 MAXes 64 gigs.

      It's annoying how many times we hear that the Macbook Air is just for entry level tasks like web browsing and checking email, It's a high performance laptop! If all you need is to browse the web, get a $400 Chromebook.

      I work on an M2 MacBook Air with 24gb of ram as a software engineer with a lot of simultaneous docker containers running things like Rails, Redis and a lot of other services and I’m always using around 20gb of ram. This notebook is just amazing, you can really do a lot with it and no one should underestimate it

      Hey@@ggman8216, what containers / IDE do you usually run? Do you think that 16GB will be able to handle it? Plus add Slack, Chrome, and a few other apps? I am thinking about buying one with 16, not sure if that's the right choice, though. As an alternative, thinking about getting a dedicated x86 machine (like, Intel NUC 11) just for remote docker context. Thanks in advance.

      @@andrii845 if I had to buy one with my own money right now I would probably get the 16gb version, it should be okay. I'm currently running 2 RubyMine windows, a container with mysql/hydra/golang, another container with rails/mysql/redis and one last container with golang. I also have around 15 tabs on chrome, spotify, docker desktop, slack, discord and an iphone simulator. Everything is using about 21gb of ram

      @@greenpulp. I am flexible when it comes to software. I will try to get it to do what I want or just find something that does or I will code it myself. But hardware you cannot configure and modify like that. Especially when it comes to notebooks. But apple... You cannot even upgrade RAM. No no no no no :)
      And we are not even speaking about the ridiculous prices that apple wants for a little bit more hardware. I can buy a lot more for the same amount. Seems stupid to me.
      I don't want that.

      @@I_am_Raziel For me it’s cheaper to pay a bit extra and get a good notebook with an operating system that makes me productive.
      Then to save money and get some Windows notebook which fights against me or would need to write my own apps. In those cases the money saved quickly disappears.
      Have to admit I get my Macs abroad instead of Europe so I can save a bit of money :) Last I saved few hundred of Euros on the Mac Mini M2 Pro
