  • Police plan to add bulletproof glass to patrol cars for officer safety.
SAN ANTONIO - In an effort to align with safety standards of law enforcement agencies nationwide, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) is pursuing a proposal to fortify patrol cars with bulletproof glass, aiming to mitigate risks faced by officers in the line of duty.
"We're trying to catch up to other departments across the country," said Danny Diaz, President of the San Antonio Police Officers’ Association (SAPOA), emphasizing the need to prioritize officer safety.
The project, estimated to span three years, entails an annual expenditure of slightly over $1.5 million. Funding for the initiative will be drawn from the city's general fund and its equipment and renewal fund.
Diaz affirmed SAPOA's commitment to advocating for the initiative, underscoring its significance in ensuring the safe return of officers to their families. "We're trying to do what's right by our members, and by the police officers that protect this community. And if bulletproof windshields is something that's needed, then absolutely, we're going to ask for it."
Navigating the bureaucratic process, however, proves to be a challenge. Approval of the funding proposal by the city council is anticipated in September, with the implementation of bulletproofing scheduled to commence in October.
Assistant Director of SAPD, Richard Riley, indicated that pending timely approval, SAPD vehicles could be equipped with bulletproof glass by January 2025.
Ethical considerations drive this push for enhanced safety measures, as law enforcement officials recognize the imperative to safeguard those who serve and protect the community.
