It’s Gaelic. The saying is used by both Scots and Irish. It means good health. The singer is a Scot, the Keyboard player Irish. They formed the band in Buckinghamshire. South East England.

For me, is the best of Marillion’s album with Fish. When it came out, I couldn’t wait for their next one.

Marillion is a Scottish band. The lead singer is Fish (aka Derek Dick) and he had this to say about this song.
Fish: "This is pronounced slanj-navah! Everyone says it in Scotland, it means 'cheers, good health!' This is a very Scottish song, about broken dreams, and guys meeting in pubs and going, (adopts very drunken accent) 'Och, if ma wife hadnee left me and ma book hadnee been ripped off, I'd be famous now!' When I write, I like to sit with a drink, read a book, write on a beer mat and doodle at the side. So I'm doing this in Edinburgh and this guy comes over and goes, 'Scuse me! Whatya dooin? Are y' a writer? I'll tell you somethin' to write abooot!' and proceeds to tell me his whole life story. And how he'd been down on his luck! And I wanted to say 'You made a mess of your life, don't blame it on fate,' but instead I just said, 'Cheers, good health!!'"
Keep up the good stuff Rob. Slainte Mhath!

Sorry Elvis. The only Scottish thing about the band is the lead Singer.

This band has two distinct eras, from the 70's and 80's that this song is part of with Fish as the lead singer who left the band in 1988. He was replaced in 89 by Steve Hogarth and they still make music to this day. Both eras are really good in their own respect. The Marillion of today is much slower and introspective and not as interesting to me but they still make some good music. The Hogarth era was better when he first joined the band. The first few albums are really great.

I'm glad to be hearing some Marillion on here. Thanks!
BTW, does anyone know which Marillion song Rob's already reacted to? I haven't been able to find that livestream.

Fish Marillion´s era is just perfect. Fish is a true modern poet! That album is perfection, emotional roller coaster. But dont forget to review my band Delirium "muerto en vida official video"
