Good painting, catches some of the peculiar "feeling" of the opera - light and graciousness alternating with a romantic dark German mood as already heard in the ouverture.

A reminder to millennium audience not able in the United States to attend live performances of MARTHA why for a hundred years MARTHA was one of the most frequently staged operas in the major opera houses of the world

      +GillyWhitfootHaysend:
The adaptation of The Last Rose of Summer in the Opera
Martha has made this Irish tune extremely popular. Eurodisc recorded this rendition in 1977, available in full opera (2-disc box set) or highlights (1 disc) formats. There is an older EMI version, with Anneliese Rothenberger and Fritz Wunderlich, which is just as good. I think you can find all of them in Amazon.
