Socialist, communist - doesn't matter till we don't realize that first of all this is song of exploited workers which wanted to be better treat by their masters, regardless of origin, religion or views. And only thing they get from rich fabricants, plutocrats and aristocracy leaded by russian tzar (since 1795 to 1918 Poland was under russian, german and austro-hungarian rule), was spit on their faces. This song doesn't mean only socialist revolution. For me, Polish, this song mean also will for freedom and independence from foreign powers.
Of course when in 1920 bolsheviks wanted to take our independence, huge part of polish socialists stood against them.

And against creation of USSR, rather in favor of creating something like EU. They fought against bolsheviks. They wanted democracy, not totalitarism or authoritarism.
