  • The reactionalyses of Eurovision 2023 continues with Sweden's highly anticipated entry by Loreen: Tattoo. Mike discusses his thoughts on this year's entry and provides a musical analysis from a first time listening.
NB: I realised afterwards that the "official video" on the Eurovision youtube page is in fact the live performance...

Yes dude! Finally someone who actually understands what this song is about! I'm a musician myself and just like you understand the copyright thing about ABBA at the start of Tattoo. That a song is vibe-wise and sound-wise inspired by another song isn't a rip off neither a copyright infringement. Both the chords and the notes for The Winner Takes It All are different from Tattoo. While the first part melody for the ABBA song starts low and goes upwards with the final note goes down again, the melody sequence for Tattoo starts high and goes down the scale with the final note goes up again.
Tattoo is absolutely a grower and you're right about it's about expectations hearing it for the first time. It's not as direct "easy listening" as Euphoria, which btw Tattoo shouldn't be compared with for obvious reasons. The best part comes after the bridge when the song goes full power and there's a switch of chords and melody before the familiar sounding last "You're stuck on me like a tattoo" lyrics line. The build up and sublime arrangements is pop perfection and Loreen conveys the emotions of the song as only she can do. The staging enhances the song. At the end of the day Eurovision is about the whole package of song, staging and the live performance from the artists voice-wise and how the choreography is executed.

You’re lucky!!! The build up part actually goes throughout which I didn’t speak about or pick up because it’s so subliminal. It’s actually the first thing we hear in the whole song.
So compositionally, they used that as a part of the vocal melody (pre-chorus) to solidify it and make it a part which you can remember quite well.
There are some other smart compositional tricks I didn’t explore as well which I’m just thinking about now as typing this

When you played the piano, the song I heard was "I'll stand by you" from the Pretenders ("You're feeling all alone. You won't be on your own"). This is the first year I've seen Eurovision available here in the USA, so this is my first time watching it, and I'm coming in without knowing anything about the competition, it's history or the competetors (I don't know, nor do I believe I've heard Loreen before)....with that said, hearing this during the semi-finals, this was one of my least favorite songs; it feels sort of basic, and done before and the visual portion of the song wasn't interesting at all (to me)...it didn't grab my attention and I couldn't believe it got sent to the finals, and I really couldn't understand why so many countries gave it 12 points, nor could I understand how it won compared to the other amazing entries. Your video helps me understand a little bit that perhaps because of her history in previous Eurovisions, there was some bais towards her. I know my tastes can differ from others, so maybe people really do like this, but it just didn't impress me at all. TLDR; it was Meh

I loved her previous song Euphoria and that's why I got really disappointed when first hearing Tattoo. That's always the risk when you've done something extraordinary. Tattoo started growing after i've been listening some times.
She competed in Swedish Melodifestivalen another year and didn't reach ESC so I really don't think that people vote because of her old performance.

@@EricZierdt Well, get what you mean, but I really like it actually. It's not like any other number, everyone was doubting her because of the simplicity of the act. That's not very ESC. But she won with the highest point ever achieved through the ESC history, people loved how she could own the stage with only her presence :)
I think the strange movement actually compliments the song. It's incredible that she can move that much and sing so good at the same time :) She's some kind of spiritual yoga blablabla (that's shit that I don't understand so I don't know how to describe it correctly). The moves are from yoga and some martial arts.

It's called a Homage! It's not even meant to be a sneaky secret and I'm not surprise that people don't find it obvious, and that most people reacting negative to it does so after watching or hearing someone else informing them about it. There is nothing wrong with an homage, but let me point you in a direction to earlier years since there have been some completely shamefull years because they voted out a song that could have won the whole Eurovision. Insider people tells me that they did it on purpose because (Swedish television) SVT, Svensk Television couldn't afford to host the Eurovision, something they would have had to do the following year, if they won a year prior, so they back stabbed the clear winner. For anyone's curiosity it was a rock song called Runaways which was voted out straight away already without any competition what so ever, it didn't even make it to semi final in Sweden which says a lot. To anyone curious, here it was... already forgotten to time. It deserves it's own video! czcams.com/video/SRhCWtfobw4/video.html

Must be those simple 3-note mini patterns that took over everything, sometimes being hidden in the background, sometimes pushed into your face in a sequence, but it's always the same 3-note pattern. For me, it's like a pink sitcom or romcom film, where you can predict all the characters and their next movements and the whole story runs out to a common banal happy ending.

Calculated, done a million times before, delegation of professional song-writers behind it, mega-budget... Vs. Käärijä with 600€ initial budget for the performance in the Finnish qualification, singing in Finnish, home-made - and he was the most popular, 50% more of public votes than Sweden; The true winner
