I’ve been that guy inside the tank recovering the remains of my friends before. Only, it was a HMMWV back in 2009 in Afghanistan. Those memories never fade or go away. I was unaffected in that moment, but once I got home and had time to decompress, it hit me like a tractor trailer. I feel for this guy. If he survives the war, he will silently carry this with him until the day he dies; with exception to maybe a handful of people he trusts or less…maybe. You’re in my prayers, bud.

My comment was intended to briefly shed light onto what these men are facing, and the lasting effects they will likely be challenged with. I’m not a hero or anything glorious. I knew what I signed up for, and I was warned about the consequences. I’m grateful that I was able to serve, but the ones who never made it home are the true heroes to me. I hope these wars all end soon, and I pray they end without the use of any weapons of mass destruction. my grandfather was one of the people that cleaned up bodies off of battlefields in WW2. i remember his stories he'd only tell when he was on white liquor. those were the only times i seen my grandfather shed a tear. He was one hell of a man and i sure do miss him

Crazy to think that as a UK Citizen, I can wake up in the morning, turn on my Xbox or PlayStation and play videogames with somebody from Russia or Iran having a great time, even making friends along with great menories but then out in the real world it states that these people are my enemies. For what it’s worth, my buddies and I (our company, Unit, etc) was sent to Afghanistan shortly after the 9/11/2001 attacks. The CIA operators were the first in but we came shortly after. We found MANY human remains that were obviously Soviet military or contractors and it seemed like a village of contractors family. I was not in a mortuary affairs unit but my buddies and I geotagged or marked our map and then passed the map coordinates on the bodies location and passed the info on as appropriate. Also, we didn’t mess with the bodies because UXO’s and landmines were pretty much everywhere. As I was told later in the deployment and also in later deployments the all reasonable attempts were made to repatriate the dead to the countries and families of origin. When the Soviets left Afghanistan it must have just been a chaotic mess and a kill fest for the Mujahadeen because there was so much disabled equipment with uniformed troops in various states of decay (mostly desiccated if the animals couldn’t get to them) as well as others that were clearly not Afghans because Afghans bury their dead. There were even crashed aircraft with dead inside, it was crazy. It was hard to believe their countries never got them back to their family. I hope that U.S. taking time from our missions to mark the deceased and for the other units like EOD who had to make sure it was even safe to retreive them and then Mortuary Affairs unit to handle their remains and the other logistics units to get them home; hopefully that brought those families some kind of closure and peace. I was in combat or training for combat throughout the 2000’s so I don’t know if Russia or any other country even acknowledged us sending them home at our own risk and expense. But that’s what civilized societies should do at the least, it’s bad enough we’re killing each other.

I don’t care if you’re pro/anti war, or pro this country or the other. Infantry always go into harms way, but tankers got a way more traumatic experience. A ricochet sounds like a church bell going off next to your ear, if a round penetrates the body and you happen to be on the other side, depending on the type of round you either have molten metal or a ‘rebar’ shooting towards you at 300mph or more. My comment was intended to briefly shed light onto what these men are facing, and the lasting effects they will likely be challenged with. I’m not a hero or anything glorious. I knew what I signed up for, and I was warned about the consequences. I’m grateful that I was able to serve, but the ones who never made it home are the true heroes to me. I hope these wars all end soon, and I pray they end without the use of any weapons of mass destruction. If only all of the countries in the world could either learn to get along or keep to themselves…if only…

My confusion turned to horror very quickly upon seeing this.

For what it’s worth, my buddies and I (our company, Unit, etc) was sent to Afghanistan shortly after the 9/11/2001 attacks. The CIA operators were the first in but we came shortly after. We found MANY human remains that were obviously Soviet military or contractors and it seemed like a village of contractors family. I was not in a mortuary affairs unit but my buddies and I geotagged or marked our map and then passed the map coordinates on the bodies location and passed the info on as appropriate. Also, we didn’t mess with the bodies because UXO’s and landmines were pretty much everywhere. As I was told later in the deployment and also in later deployments the all reasonable attempts were made to repatriate the dead to the countries and families of origin. When the Soviets left Afghanistan it must have just been a chaotic mess and a kill fest for the Mujahadeen because there was so much disabled equipment with uniformed troops in various states of decay (mostly desiccated if the animals couldn’t get to them) as well as others that were clearly not Afghans because Afghans bury their dead. There were even crashed aircraft with dead inside, it was crazy. It was hard to believe their countries never got them back to their family. I hope that U.S. taking time from our missions to mark the deceased and for the other units like EOD who had to make sure it was even safe to retreive them and then Mortuary Affairs unit to handle their remains and the other logistics units to get them home; hopefully that brought those families some kind of closure and peace. I was in combat or training for combat throughout the 2000’s so I don’t know if Russia or any other country even acknowledged us sending them home at our own risk and expense. But that’s what civilized societies should do at the least, it’s bad enough we’re killing each other.

I don’t care if you’re pro/anti war, or pro this country or the other. Infantry always go into harms way, but tankers got a way more traumatic experience. A ricochet sounds like a church bell going off next to your ear, if a round penetrates the body and you happen to be on the other side, depending on the type of round you either have molten metal or a ‘rebar’ shooting towards you at 300mph or more. If it hits the ammo compartment, your tank becomes a bomb or a welding torch. Thank you for everyone but especially the tankers that accept this reality and continue to do their jobs
